Welding Tank Bombs

Post by Biolock » 05 Aug 2015, 22:27

This post is going to be dedicated to keeping track of welding tank bombs and debate their legitimacy.. Right now I'm upholding an argument that we should make it so welding tanks can not be detonated by bullets. The reasons for this argument being that welding tanks being detonated by bullets is, a majority of the time, if not always, detonated by new players, or panicking players, leading to the death of all their allies around them. Some might say "well that's just bad luck", and they'd be right, but the problem is that one players utter ludicrous stupidity shouldn't ruin and frustrate the plethora of players around them. Some staff members disagree; I'd like to have a discussion about this, thoughts?

Is it even possible to detonate welding tanks via bullets? in Real Life? There wouldn't really be enough heat, I think. But I don't know anything about that anyway. So, I give it a "remove bullet detonation" since I think that wouldn't happen iRL. Not sure though.

It's a compressed gas. Imagine it like a big metal balloon. Also sparks.

I'd rather it just be punished for doing it stupidly. I mean you could use them by a door as a trap. That would be pretty cool.

The problem is that constructive use of a welding bomb via gunshots has never been done as far as I've seen.... and I'm on A LOT.

I've seen it used constructively a few times. Usually as a last resort though.

They were mainly used when we had boxstation up, and it was normally due to a stray bullet or a xeno camping a corner in maint.
So far i haven't seen one being used for harm in the current version of Cm.

It's not as bad as in nostromo, where an explosion could mean an hull breach which woul make the round worst for everybody.

However, now? Meh, I would have no problem on adding more resistence, removing and adding welder fuel backpacks for engineers or the status quo.

Why would gunshots detonate the welding fuel tank?
The stuff is a liquid, you can pour it into beakers and a glass, or into a fire extinguisher and spray it around.
Unless you're using incendiary or HE bullets, your shots will just make it leak.

It's a liquid because it's compressed. You cannot compress liquids so if it was a liquid at room temperature you'd have to have some other gas in it to pressurize the tank.

One time my teammates pushed a welder bomb into Xenobiology, and I was shooting through the main hallway, one of my teammates pushed me into the hive. I panicked and since they kept pushing me I shot them in their face, he got out of the way and then someone put the welder bomb infront of me. I accidentally shot the welder bomb and received a 12 hour ban.

Kurugi, did you even read what I said?
You can literally spray it on the floor out of a fire extinguisher and its a liquid.

I can spray hydrogen out of a chem sprayer and pour it into beakers but it appears liquid. Just because it functions a certain way in the game doesn't mean it's a fact. There's several things that contradict logic.
Hydrogen has to be below 33.23K to be a liquid. That's -239.92°C

That's below absolute zero.

Impossible.

Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin, or, -243 celcius.
Probably there's a value for farenheit but I don't give a damm.

I'm sure a lot of players have been seeing welding tank bombs blocking the ladder so that you couldn't go down or push it aside as you would get blown to crippled, and confirmed KIA.
