What would happen if we removed the metagaming rule?

Post by HalfdeadKiller » 06 Aug 2015, 21:35

So, I've been thinking. What if we completely removed the rule about not metagaming, and focused more on the actual gameplay? It sounds a lot less stressful, and perhaps even a bit more fun. But, I dunno really. Just a thought.

Powergaming would reach Peak levels, and frankly honest, everyone trying to powergame is not really that fun at all.
Atleast thats my opinion on it.

removing the meta gaming rule would essentially ruin the game, marines would just run to where the Xenos generally set up (the caves) and destroy the aliens almost immediately. games would last 20 minutes max and would not be fun for anyone

I'm actually on HalfdeadKiller's side, I've considered this a thousand times, but I've never been ballsy enough to post it. I honestly don't think it would make that big of a difference, the map is too big to meta game the exact location of the hive, and if you don't have an FOB or the power set up you're just going to get steam rolled anyway. I'm sick and tired of having to pretend like I don't know what that Hud reading on my medical hud means, or having to dance around knowing what the "metal bird" is. These things take away from the experience and obstruct what I believe to be true roleplay. We could still have rules in place to prevent shuttle camping and whatnot, but ultimately, the biggest problem with meta gaming was on the Nostromo map and the damn vents.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

I'd count on average, the xenos have 15- 20 xenos by the time the marines touch down, which is almost always more xenos than they have when they decide to attack the Sulaco. The only difference is that the xenos might not have as many structural defenses, but it's still really not that hard to repeal the first wave of marines.

Meh, I don't really give a crap if i get a buncha hate. God forbid we actually discuss stuff in General Discussion.

I think the biggest issue might be squad specific roles, but they would still have use due to marines needing that specific role's knowledge. On the topic of marines rushing aliens, you could simply have more aliens spawn. Or provide more hive-like defenses placed via the map.

Power-gaming happens regardless in the later portion of the round anyway. Plus, you can implement code to hinder power gaming behavior. If someone stuff helmets in their pack a bunch, make the helmet take up two backpack slots. Give it a risk/reward system.

We'd go from "medium" rp to no rp.

If metagaming was allowed I would basically quit the server, seeing as how the RP factor would be completely and utterly destroyed. And that's honestly like 3/4 of the fun.

@Apop. Perhaps, however you can still have RP even without a meta-gaming rule. Sure it might not be as prevalent as it is now, but I'm not sure if that would be a bad thing. I will have to play more Alpha CM, to get a better grasp on how the server plays on Alpha. I don't think I am too well knowledgeable on the server playstyle right now.

It would be way too chaotic if that happened. People would charge the aliens, RP would die, more rambos.

Nothing would change, and the Marines would kill themselves harder.

No, marine's would kill shit harder..

One of the biggest thing's not META-Gaming stops is the Marine's from full assaulting the Xeno's right away.

Think about it, early game the Xeno's don't have the number's to stop even 2 squad's attacking. Sometime's late game 2-3 squad's can even takedown a hive... although quite rare.

Imagine all 4 squad's going right for the Xeno's every round? There would be no CM

HAH

This actually happened once though, for a while, on the old server I think.

Think about how long it'll take to do a briefing, regardless of whether or not we have knowledge of the Xenos. You've got that little 15-30 minute delay that'll allow some Xenos to evolve and fortify the planet, and given that they'll know what's up, they may or may not fortify a hive in the caves, which means that the Marines might walk into nothing where they expected to find a hive. If I was the Queen, I'd go for somewhere out of the way, though where no one would think to look for a hive. US Army small unit tactics describe building a patrol base in a strategic location in which it is so shitty that the enemy wouldn't think to search for a patrol base. In ROTC, they always told us that it's best to camp in a location with heavy brush and cover, such to the extent that it's shitty even for you. Basically, the Xenos could do this. Hell, they could even set up a decoy hive in the caves if they had enough drones.

The Xenos are great with guerrilla tactics too; all it takes is for one Xeno to run past a squad, and you've got 4 Marines all chasing after it, shooting each other in the back and getting farther and farther from the main force. Begin the round doing this and break up some of the squads. Face-hug them, store them in your incognito-located hive.

Then think: what will the Marines do when the hive isn't where they assumed it would, but they are definitely taking casualties? I'd set up an FOB in the dome, consolidate my forces within this complex and Engineering, and send out scouting patrols to locate wherever that hive may be. Keep using guerrilla tactics, and while the Marines might be aware of facehugger pregnancies, you're still taking Marines off the field of battle. Plant eggs all throughout the jungle, making them exercise caution and temperance in their movements, buying you some time.

This is how briefing would go. 'GET OUT THERE AND KILL THOSE ALIUMS.' Briefing over.

As far as I as able to grasp aliens cannot put weeds in the jungle meaning the queen can't put eggs in the jungle cause there ain't alien weeds there.
That means the only reliable places to build hives would be caves and the facilities, caves could be swept by the 4 squads easily since due to high pop of the server each squad has about 8~10 marines making 32~40 marines to sweep the caves, the aliens spawn with 5 larvas and one still has to become queen.
The limit of the amount of the aliens that can spawn seem to be directly related to the amount of weeds on the map(from reading a few posts on the forum).
Meaning that flamethrowers to cleanse the weeds would reduce the max amount of aliens available.

I think it would be fair if the marines started with at least some knowledge of xenos. It gets old when everyone is trying to feign surprise and ignorance about all of this stuff every round.

To be honest I think that allowing Marines basic information about xenos (facehuggers, T1 Aliens) would not change much at all.

The only difference removing the initial 'no xeno information' rule would have is that there would be no situations where you have some Runner nuzzle up to a team of Marines like a dog for no reason, until someone shoots it.

I already see people bringing extra helms all the time, it's kind of impossible to enforce the rules on that level.
