Things To Do: Mapping

Post by Shadow » 07 Feb 2016, 20:29

So, evening, or morning, depending on your location. I'm Shadow, and I would like to learn to map. Its that simple. I feel like I have the general hang of placing turfs and objects, and using Dream Maker, but when it comes to disposals, wiring and atmospherics I'm hopelessly lost. I'd like it if someone could help me learn to become better at mapping, because I'd someday like to become a mapper for this server, and maybe someday my own server.

I'd just like to know how to start setting up power, atmos, disposals, things like that, maybe even the making of shuttles and making doors and functions tied to buttons. If anyone would be willing to help, it would be very appreciated, and I would owe you a favour.

Sincerely,
Shadow

Well, what specifically do you want to learn about? Disposals is actually one of the simpler systems. There are only a few disposal objects and there's no need to change any of the default variables for garbage piping. This guide (https://tgstation13.org/wiki/Guide_to_mapping) is a good start to if you're interested in some of the more complex systems.

I've not seen this guide before, so thank you. As for what systems I want to learn, I'd like to learn about setting power distribution, the engine that the engineers will use, and the station/map wide atmos distribution. If it helps, I'll say all I really know how to do is place objects and turfs. Therefore, I'm not too well versed in the technical side of mapping.

I still have no idea what I'm doing. I've been wondering how to set up an atmos system from scratch, and have been experimenting by creating an "asteroid cave" with a room in it, and wondering how I could pipe atmos into it.

I recommend looking at the atmos loop on the mining asteroid in the current edition of Baystation. It's a simple gas mixture loop: vents pump clean air out of the mixing room while scrubbers collect the bad stuff and recycle it.

Link to where I could get the map file to look at? Please?

Also you should know that most "simulated" tiles already have breathable atmosphere built-in as part of the tile. The Baystation12 code can be found here: https://github.com/Baystation12/Baystation12

I figured about the oxygen thing, as it said somewhere earlier in the giude. Also, thank you for the link Arach

First, you need to know a difference with knotted wire and smooth wire, how they link to other objects, how pumps works, how the gas acts inside pipes, etc. Play few rounds as atmos tech or engineer and ask people to teach you how SMES transfers power, how does it input power, where is it coming from... Start doing some atmos projects in atmosia, as it is pretty much the same thing as mapping. Make a miniature disposal chute there, small filtering station, anything really.

Once you get into that, open up a baysource or tgsource map and observe how the pipes/power wires/apcs/atmos pipes were placed.

And then, once you are done with that, open one of those maps and start your simple projects.
