Tutorial Video Series...

Post by apophis775 » 18 Feb 2016, 17:51

So, I'm working on a tutorial video series for CM. Specifically, it'll be how to perform/do standard tasks.

Things I'll have in the first few videos:

The Engine - Starting, Emergency Procedures, low-power restarts
Medical - How to stabilize a crit patient, basic surgeries
MP - Proper arrest/detain procedures, combating a robust marine

Looking for other stuff people would be interested in. ALSO, The name as it stands, is probably going to be "Colonial Marines for Stupid Shits" or something similar.

Unless someone has a suggestion for a better one.

general aliens stuff. Doing things like swallowing people isn't general knowledge.

If think from a new player´s perspective... they would probably want to know the most basic of the basic procedures of normal marine on the map, such as getting equipped and in which part of ship you can get your weapons, armor.. etc from, explaining that they should go to briefing after gearing up or getting attachments from requisitions (brief explanations about a few available attachments). After that explaining they need to go down the ladder (honestly, many might not know at their first round that the ladders are not just a decoration). Then explain about general gameplay elements such as working in a squad, roles in the squad from standard marine to squad leader... but this is only if you want to make a tutorial for people who want to play first time in colonial marines, would be good advertisement in my opinion. I doubt anyone on their first round would think "hmm.. how I am gonna set up the engine?" I would recommend having those as advanced tutorials which could follow up.

Start with extreme basics (as the person above has said) then start moving into more complex things, personally I would be interested in seeing something about the proper use of each weapon.. Oh and assigning basic macros would be nice.

How many new players would watch a tutorial explaining the basics to them?

When I was new I wouldn't have (I had quite a bit of other SS13 knowledge. but I learnt all that by trial and error (and asking) too)

I didn't start reading guides or watching tutorials until I knew the basics and wanted to learn the complex stuff. I still haven't looked at the engine on the Saluco, I've had way to much experience blowing massive holes in SS13 stations, and I dont want to be that guy who does it in CM.

Good arguments, but that is entirely tied to the context where you decided to learn by yourself. I know, some people are like that, but for example I have referred 3 friends to SS13 by making them watch a tutorial video, from which they could form their opinion about the game on. If we add tutorials only for existing regular players, it does not benefit the playerbase increase that much.

Really nice to see something like this come into fruition for newer players. I believe it would help people quite a bit.

That sounds like a really cool idea.

I may do a video on how to be CL

I'd require assistance from Bill Carson as commander.

Oh man, I have had tons of unconventional ideas I've been wanting to test out. Especially concerning gas mixes, completely 0 power startups (meaning not even the pumps), and special ideas for cooling.
There should be something supplemental called "How to Engine when things are fucked" or something stupid like that

A short general overview of expectations, the crew, and the gamemode/server would probably be useful.

This is a touchy one beacuse ss13 has a very steep initial learning curve and most new players don't even get past it and just dump Byond right in the trash. I remember when I started I had no idea what the hell I was doing. Eventually I watched some videos and got the hang of it. After that I learned pretty much everything through just playing the game. Most important thing is patience, to get past that first bump.
So I think the tutorials should be more focused on the bare basics of CM. Players that have played ss13 before can easily adapt and learn the map/playstyiles/loadouts/etc.

That is actually the WRONG way to mutiny..cause if it's Carson, theirs gonna be ALOT of bloodshed. And salt. Mostly salt.

What ever became of this? I always wanted to try to make a video tutorial but was turned off by the fact that the game updates so frequently that my guide would become outdated quickly.

Like the great NonFlyingObjext, it never got off the ground.

It requires heart, passion. LOVE, tears, Blood, sweat, jizz, Heart, more sweat, Pizza, Illegal copies of adobe, Cntrl+C and V. More tears, Some cheap standby music (possibly this), another round of pizza, voice overs, text boxes, color swatches, more sweat. A credits sequence, knowledge, more passion, and a job well done.

Tap on some memes, possibly a harlem shake or two to really sell the datedness of the video so others remember that CM updates regularly.
Gaze upon me,
for I have wandered deep into the ancient tombs of knowledge to which lie madness and sorrow, cleansing a path for all those who walk behind me...

...

But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!
