Does anyone else find that super unrealistic characters are immersion breaking?

Post by OatzAndHoes » 14 Apr 2016, 16:20

Quite often I'll find myself really immersed in this game, only to find it ruined by a ridiculous character. RPing unique characters is fun and cool, but when you are gearing up in a Marine Corp ship with the baddest of the bad, getting yelled at by sergeants to get the lead out of your boots, and you look around among the faces of marines to see one with a floorlength green ponytail, some anime name, and a character description that looks like it was ripped from a bad starwars fanfiction, I quickly lose all sense of immurshuns. Aliens had badass men and women, but they were all pretty realistic. Hudson, Hicks, and Vasquez all looked, sounded, and acted like marines. You didn't see some 7' girl with green spiky hair and a name that sounds like the scientific Latin name for some exotic fish. You saw marines with short haircuts, in decent shape, and with normal names. Interested on other peoples thoughts on this.

Message replaced with a robotic arm, like these characters' personalities.

Saw a guy running about named "Gavrilo Princip", guy who basically started WW1. Admins seemed okay with it but it was immersion breaking for me.

This post just made me LOL. I do agree with it though, tired of the pink hair or blue hair fuc boi who play as a marine.

Its the internet. While we try to enforce keeping things a bit more on the realistic side (Cough Baystation) we have tried in the past to make things a bit more like that hence making it so your hair does not stick through helmets and stuff anymore.

<-- plays a 7' girl with spiky green hair and and name that sounds straight out of a species catalogue

Jokes aside, can't say I'm not bummed by this, but honestly, it's not nearly as bad as it could be.

Also a suggestion for a new role. They could work with the MPs.

We are actually one of the few Medium RP servers to enforce some pretty strong rules... Names, Outfits and standard behavior...

What irks me is the marines that want to go obvious suicide missions( not dangerous, suicidal) and yell at others calling them pussies and not real muhreens for coming. Then they proceed to repeat HUA!! And such.

I find that the 7' tall marines with floor length neon green hair are the first in the meat grinder. So I treat them like movie extras and don't really pay much attention. Some times they can surprise me though.

I agree, The rules about names has cut down on a SIGNIFICANT amount of immersion break, however we SHOULD start boosting the rule up on ATLEAST character flavor texts, you aren't going to have their whole entire backstory merely by examining them, we shouldn't be having this

My point given, We also shouldn't have OUTRAGEOUS things, like, hes a ten foot marine with GLOWING green eyes and phantom grey hair, who can shoot down 10 men with just his thumb. Or well, you get my point >.>

Don't like their flavor text, don't read... Honestly.
If you want immersion you can go to a reenactment, let people have their fun which is already limited.

I won't lie I don't approve of the 'oc donut steel' characters, but they also don't ruin the game for me or the immersion, because even in real life there will be a few odd ones.

YPA! SMYERT KAPITALIZMU!(URA! DEATH TO CAPITALISM!)

I've seen many shit throughout my time, pre-alpha and alpha. I've had a squad full of edgy weeaboos with neon/green/red floorlenght braud hairs and black/red eyes, rushing into hives and being first ones to die, leaving me alone in the squad. People need to stop.

I've seen one Barney Calhoun once, a Dr. Kleiner too.

I've also seen some other weird shit, like, full on characters ripped straight from MGS like Sniper Wolf and a long ass flavour text about them. This needs to stop.

I own a joke character named "Nicce Arpei" (you know what it means) and I usually go play as it when I see weird shit going on.

I mean I don't like having them around in an RP game, but it's the internet they make up a PRETTY good portion of it tbh. lmao If we got rid of the animu we'd lose 25% of server.

Honestly the animu doesn't bother me. But the EXTREMELY neon colored characters is frustrating. Or people that treat their character like a giant walking meme.

most of these characters I've seen are Sulaco-side, cause they are just a xeno bait planetside. so long as they do their job uptop and not just sit and chat as the MP somewhere while command is getting decapitated (for example), I don't care.

See. As a player of a character with floor length braid hair, I cringe at the sight of people when theirs is fucking ORANGE or PURPLE. Mine is blonde. Blonde is a nice, normal, safe color. Bright fucking pink is only tolerable on Lucius Pinks. e.e
