Playing As A Doctor
Why don't people play doctor more often?
Honestly, I love to play doctor, it feels good to know that after treating someone, and getting them back to the fight, you just saved them from hours of possible boredom. On top of that, being a doctor is fun, and generally, one of the best roles you can play, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love to play as a marine and get my rootie tootie point and shootie done, but like I said, to me, doctor is one of the best roles.
Now, I can understand some people find it stressful, which it is, and some people might lack skill, but I have seen skilled doctors, and I always wonder why they don't play as a doctor more often. I'll admit, I'm not the best doctor, I could stand to learn a few things, improve my medical repertoire, per se, but I'm not the worst either, and that is the reason I play doctor on a regular basis. I want to help, because I can.
This is really just a bit of a rant, but if you have anything to add, please, talk below.

I play doctor when i can, but honestly it gets dull and boring to just wait for someone to come and you can treat them, which is kind of why i am excited for the hologram thingy that apop MIGHT implement for doctors to practice

I almost always play Doctor when I'm on the marine side, it's not a bad role, but it gets repetitive after a time. I do get some kicks from paralysing uninjured marines who try to get in my way, though. Seriously, if you're not injured, get the hell out of the medbay.

Burnout. It's a bit of a thankless task and the lack of anything to do for an hour really made it hard for me to consider being a doctor on the server. Only so many times you can make meds nobody uses and set up optimal cryo mixes. Also there's very little variety in the surgeries. It's always larva removal, skull fixing, or prosthetic limbs (foot/leg slashing ayy). Head reattachment sometimes, but that just points out how much better cloning is in every way compared to doing several surgeries on a patient.

I too play as a Doctor when I'm a human, and as they've said it does tend to follow the same pattern most of the time. The medical personnel you're working with have made the biggest difference in my experience.

Re: Playing As A Doctor
The thing worser than those people are the ones who try to treat the ones you treating, like say you gave a guy tricord twice, if you give him another tricord, he will OD, but he still has a ton of damage and it will take him a while to get up, then some asshole starts yelling at you to fix him, you tell him you did, then after some point, he starts trying to either steal your gear or injects the dude with more chemicals and OD's him, causing most likely a death, so annoying urgh.Boltersam wrote:I almost always play Doctor when I'm on the marine side, it's not a bad role, but it gets repetitive after a time. Re: Playing As A Doctor
Never really sat down and learned the procedures for every type of injury you can get in SS13, and I wouldn't want to keep someone on an operating table for 15 minutes unconscious while I tab back and forth to the wiki guide. I'm eternally grateful to every doctor that treats me, though.. y'know, so long as they actually finish their work. Lots of times it's a "heal the foot, leave the brain" kind of situation.
I pride myself on my medic work, though. I enjoy triaging patients and getting them as stable as possible so that when they do see the doctor, they aren't critical.

Playing doctor? Blah, it's all about RP. "Oh, look! I saved someone's life!" True art is when you're fighting not scheduled surgery, but other player. When you both try your best to show each other who's best. Doctors are for people who can't fight.

Please, go make five bottles of bruteHEAL pills under five minutes and hand them out. Also, not to mention the triple surgeries performed in one try because of people being infected most of times.Perfectian wrote: And anyone can do it.
Seriously, I have seen people that do worser as a doctor than a medic. It isn't just simple surgery you have to do at most times.

Re: Playing As A Doctor
Doctor is pretty much a thankless job, you heal them back to full health, mend broken bones, stick the blood back in the person and 90% percent of the time they'll just ask if their done and will leave.
Plus it can be really stressful when you're the only doctor or in some cases, the only GOOD doctor. I play doctor or CMO a lot on Akemi and it's always an uphill battle that I get burned out through in the end.

Re: Playing As A Doctor
I did a stretch of playing doctor as my main role with Elina until recently. It's fun and satisfying when you're able to take in multiple patients in crit and have them all out on their feet again relatively quickly through precision and good preparation of drugs. Typically there's very little time to actually RP out the treatment or any other interactions however, and going through the motions repeatedly gets stale after a while. Also, it gets more and more tempting to make pills named 'Fix' full of 60u of Potassium Chlorophoride for the healthy marines who insist on getting immediate treatment because they stubbed their toes or used a welder without eye protection.

No no no, Majority of Doctors are fully capable of fighting back, and the Regulars who play as them are decently robust if you hand them a gun to fight back or even a knife, doctors are for people who want other people to get back up in a fastest possible way to fight again, even if it means going through 10 surgeries to fix you up.Perfectian wrote:Doctors are for people who can't fight.

Now that we have that out of the way...
I play only doctor/medic because feelsgoodman.jpg. And as a doctor, I'm exposed to only 1/5th of the retardness that's going on on the ground.
Also, if you're just standing around before the first patient comes in, WHY ARE YOU NOT MAKING ALL THE CHEMS?

Re: Playing As A Doctor
Alright, I can see some of these reasons, but I don't see the getting bored one. I never get bored with being a Doctor, it always feels different. Each surgery feels like a challenge to me. When I'm brought a wounded marine, it's like a test, and therefore I'm never bored.

Re: Playing As A Doctor
I mostly play doctor, but occasionally play a medic if I want to change things up a bit. I find it nearly impossible to get bored of chemistry. There's always a way to improve your chem making speed or come up with a more efficient blend. If by some miracle the medics actually want peridaxon, and you know how to make a ton of it before briefing even starts, you're likely in for a pleasant round. And for anyone who thinks doctors can't fight, try engaging a t3 in an operating theatre with no armor. Hope you made a decent stim.

Re: Playing As A Doctor
Do you treat internal bleeding, organ-, brain- and eye damage with surgery or drugs? I can totally see surgical treatment being the more interesting of the two, but I have a hard time not just forcing pills down peoples throat and only doing surgery for bone fractures and embryo removal, in order to keep up with inflow of patients (and also minimize the amount of time the patient's player has to sit and wait for it to be over).Panda wrote:Alright, I can see some of these reasons, but I don't see the getting bored one.
