Marines know aliens exist
Clarification here, for people who just skim this: I am not saying that marines do or should know anything about the alien species they end up fighting(facehuggers, queens etc.). I am talking about other alien species found in Aliens lore, such as Arcturians, Stoks, Naeras and "bugs".
This has been bugging me for a while, and i've been shouted down for saying it in briefing a couple times, so I might as well bring it up here. The USCMC has canonically encountered many varieties of aliens prior to the events of the movie, and therefore so have we.
Since the terms alien and xenomorph can refer to any nonterran lifeform, and are mentioned in the movie as such, for clarity's sake the species found on LV-426 and 624 will be referred to as Ayys in this post. Hopefully in the comments as well or this is going to get confusing.
The marines' banter during their post cryo chow is the best example of this. During breakfast, Frost talks about how he wants some more "Arcturian poontang", with another marine reminds him that the Arcturian he fucked was male. His response is that it "doesn't matter when it's Arcturian". Clearly they are talking about a nonhuman species here.
A little before this a couple marines are discussing Ripley and her role on the mission. Their conversation is as follows:
"She's some kind of consultant. Apparently she saw an alien once"
"whoopdee fucking doo, i'm impressed!"
Not only have these marines seen aliens before, they're common enough to make Ripley the butt of a joke.
More movie evidence comes from the briefing. Hudson asks if "this is gonna be a stand up fight or another bug hunt". I don't know about you, but I don't know of any terran bugs that the USCMC wouldn't be INCREDIBLE overkill for. Personally I like to believe that he's talking about the Bugs from Starship Troopers (and that Scott Fleming lost his arm on the USCMC version of big K), but that's just me.
Gorman responds to this with "All we know is that there's still no contact with the colony and a Xenomorph may be involved". Gorman is extremely by the book, so he's using the technical term for aliens, though not specifically Ayys. He even says to Ripley when Burke is trying to convince her to go that "we've been trained to deal with situations like this", referring to fighting unknown aliens.
Finally, the game itself has non-Ayy aliens in it. I don't know about you, but I haven't seen many Naeras or Stoks around my house, and they do not appear to have been dug up with the Ayys. Aliens were a part of life on LV-624 long before the events of the game.
I get that this is a pretty long winded "WELL AKSHEWALLY" post, but it really annoys me when marines in briefing instantly shout down the idea that aliens of any kind could be on LV-624 as stupid. It's not stupid, it's cannon.

Well, all the LZ planets were terraformed by humans, so, eh, there must be only cannon animals. Exept naeras and spoks... And those ugly banana-peel trees...

Re: Marines know aliens exist
Regardless of cannon lore Our lore states that the marines do NOT have knowlage of the aliens if and if you at other topics on the mater you would have seen that it has been stated many times that it's for balence reasons.
So no, it's not cannon in our lore and it is a stupid idea that has been explained away dozens of times before.

Re: Marines know aliens exist
I get the feeling you didn't really read my post. I am not talking about THE aliens, facehuggers and queens and so forth. I am talking about general nonterran species. Marines in briefing act like the idea of finding any nonterran life is ridiculous, but it isn't. There are many kinds of aliens in the lore apart from THE aliens, and for all marines know one of them could be the problem. It could be Arcturians. It could be bugs. Suggesting this gives marines no advantage, since I agree that they have and should have no knowledge of THIS SPECIFIC TYPE of alien. Calling this stupid when you plainly haven't actually read it is pretty shitty.Allan1234 wrote:Regardless of cannon lore Our lore states that the marines do NOT have knowlage of the aliens if and if you at other topics on the mater you would have seen that it has been stated many times that it's for balence reasons.

Re: Marines know aliens exist
Of particular note is in the W-Y debriefing in the film, Aliens, one of the W-Y representatives confirms that prior to terraforming efforts and the construction of Hadley's Hope, LV-426 was a 'rock' with no known species on it, indicating that other worlds with native life existed.
It stands to reason that if a sentient species (Arcturians) have been located, that a wide variety of xenofauna would already have been documented, of course nothing as extreme as xenomorphs.

Little to no information about them on the wiki, and it is hard to say if that should be taken seriously or not given that it comes from the weird novels and such.

Re: Marines know aliens exist
There are various other alien races in the comics, some of them sentient. It wouldn't surprise me that the Colonial Marines encountered them before to some extent.

Re: Marines know aliens exist
If humanity discovered them, it wouldn't matter if the Colonial Marines did or not because they would be documented and be freely accessed by anyone, like on the internet or something.Noize wrote:There are various other alien races in the comics, some of them sentient. Re: Marines know aliens exist
Way I see and /enforce/ it, xenos is a perfectly fine word to use.
It's a technical term the Marines seem to use for any alien species.
Xenomorph is less fine, because it's actually about thespecies.
So, eh. Obviously they know other shit exists, at least imho.

Re: Marines know aliens exist
Xenomorph is OK to calling because it's a fancy term for "alien form", from greek "xeno": "alien" From greek "Morph" "body/form". The species we meet and fight in the game/the movies/comics/books have the more specific name of "Xenomorph XX121" or scientific name of "Internecivus raptus".LouisLouiz wrote:You can know about there being non human lifeforms (it's in all SS13 Lore that humans have to be racist to homo-reptilius/LIZARD MUNS)

Re: Marines know aliens exist
I always call them aliens. I don't personally care if others disagree with it because it is CANON as stated in this rant. They're futuristic space warriors, of COURSE they've found alien lifeforms. Not to mention as stated it's completely canon for Marines to have knowledge of aliens(just not these ones). Personally, I find it to be failRP when the aliens are discarded as dogs, lizards, or hell even normal wildlife for that matter.
