Discussion on objective-based gameplay

Post by Edgelord » 17 Sep 2016, 18:44

Ever since the Alpha came out, I've always been of the mind that CM could be improved by having gameplay focused around missions. This is not to say I don't enjoy CM how dare you I just think that some extra focus could help us avoid rounds that drag on and reduce turtling.

The generic example I always provide is having a radio uplink that marines need to keep operational. It can break down on its own (requiring engineers to fix it). If the marines hold it for x amount of time they win, if the xenos destroy it they win. New round. The uplink would would be in a sort of no man's land and xenos could not build on it or destroy it before its initial startup.

The specifics of the example I gave aren't important. I provided it to pose the question: Do you think CM could benefit from objective-based gameplay or do you prefer the "kill em all" style?

Honestly, having an objective or two of sorts would help keep marines busy and reduce the amount of metarushing that tends to happen on the marine side.

You can only do so much to convince a marine not to cross the river before you start sounding like an idiot. "Oh, we can't cross the river yet because uh.. Reasons."

Objective-based rounds wouldn't hurt. Besides the eventual map cycle, objective-based rounds would spice up the server even more.

I think objective based rounds would give CM a breath of fresh air from the 2-sh years we've had of pure kill em all (minus the events) and would change things up a bit more to keep me playing for more than one or two rounds.

Objective-based gamemodes would be a nice way to spice things up, and would require more tactical thinking to succeed.

This sounds like a fantastic idea. I used to play this in the alpha stage, and although it's improved significantly since then, I'm still not a fan of every round essentially being a down-and-dirty brawl between aliens and marines. Weyland-Yutani has their own interests; I think marines should be more heavily encouraged to defend things in the colony, retrieve them for safe-keeping, keeping things working, etc.

add a hard objective like capturing a xeno alive or even an impossible one sometimes like capturing a pred

No.

Because that is actually almost impossible and would only be completed on Predator rounds, which are rare.

And if it only showed up in pred rounds, it would OOC let people know it's a Predator round.
