Whalebarf - Moderator Application

Post by whalebarf » 26 May 2017, 00:25

Byond ID: Whalebarf

Colonial Marines Character: Andy Hueghs

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Timezone: US Central -6:00

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
About 50 in the summer.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
No.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
No, only played the ones Apop hosted.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Hippe, Yog and Aurora

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
Haven't made any.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
GOON, I ended up leaving when an admin was speaking to me.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
No, but I am learning how to use it.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I'd first PM the player who shot and ask why they did it. I'd give them a warning not to do it again, and I would make a note. After that I would revive the shot player if the player was killed.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
First I would determine why the ship was breached. In the event a predator had used their gauntlet then I would not intervene, and make an announcement stating that there is a breach and it should be fixed. The announcement would be a ship announcement not an admin announcement. If it were the case of griefing, I would ask about who did it while looking at the logs to determine who did it. I would ban the griefer and make a note. I would also then request that the griefer be perma-banned if the ship was heavily damaged and multiple players were killed. I would then seal the breach and revive the players who had died.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would spawn in as a marine and try to help the confused marine. I'd explain to them what they need to do and where to go. After that I would then go back into cryo with my character, ghost, and resume my duties.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I would first ask them to stop being rude and tell them I will be directing them to an Admin. If there was no admin online I would go onto the slack and request that one comes online. If no admin is able to come online I would inform the player about that and request to stop using Ahelp. After an admin comes online I would then PM him telling him that an admin has arrived. If in the time of me telling him no admin can come online and an admin coming online he had not stopped Ahelping I would mute him from ahelping.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would inform him that I am telling him to change it for the next round and have him tell me the name he wants. If he still refuses I would then forcibly change their name and refer the to the rules.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I would PM the Maintenance Tech and ask him why he has armor and a rifle and request that he take it off. If he refuses to take it off I would sleep him and remove the items, then I would make a note about this incident. If he puts it on again I would then sleep him for the rest of the round and make an addition to the note.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would inform him that it is against the rules and tell him to finish up the surgery he is doing if he is doing one, then I would tell him to not do it again. If he were to do it again I would make a note of it.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I would make an announcement to inform the marines that their pay will be docked if they refuse to go down. If they further refused to go down I would inform them that an incentive will be sent if they go down and attack. To the aliens; I would assume the role as the Queen Mother and inform them that I have been taken onto a metal hive and that they must rescue me.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I wound inform the Iron Bear that it is fair due to him having a hostile role.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I would ask the marine to stop doing that. If they continue I would warn them and make a note of it.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I would inform the marine that it is improper escalation and would give the marine a warning and a note it.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I would go onto the slack and attempt to reach an admin, if that fails I will go on discord and see if I can get any admins attention.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
It depends on how racist the comments are, if they seems to not cause that much harm I would ask the one who made the comments to stop. If he doesn't I would warn the player and make a note.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I would ban the marine who open fired and then go to the perm-ban request forum and request that they be perm-banned for griefing. I would then identify who was killed and revive them. I would also make a note for the player.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I would ask why they did it and give them a warning to do it again. I would also make a note. If they have a history I would job ban them from Xeno.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I would request that they behave like a xeno and warn them not to do that again but also inform them that they can use it occasionally but to not over use it, maybe once every 15 minutes or so. I would then make a note.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
Inform the xeno that the xeno who called it a "dropship" can do so and that it is not against the rules. I would then tell the xeno who ahelped to read the rules.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I would make an announcement that there most likely is not any hostile presence on the planet. I would then PM the officer who said that, that they are not supposed to know that and to refrain from doing it again.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
I would warn the marine not to do it again and that it was not RP. I would then make a note of it.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would inform the other staff member about what they have done wrong and attempt to have them correct their mistake. If they continue to do their job incorrectly I would contact an admin about the situation.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I would contact an admin about what the staff member is doing. If it is a higher ranking staff member I'd record as much evidence as I can and attempt to contact the Head Admin, Rahzel, or Apop.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
If the player is talking before or after the round I would let it slide, but if it happened during the round I would ask them not to continue, if they continue to do so I would mute them from being able to use OOC.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Since this is my first application, if it gets denied can you please tell me what I can improve on.

Review:

Code: Select all

1.) Minor thing but you need to check their note history as well. This could possibly be a repeat offence.

3.) As a moderator you will be unable to really interact with the game outside of PMs, especially as an oberserver. What you should do is have a mentor PM them if one is online. If one isn't, you could request them in slack or help them yourself.

4.) A minor note, as staff you would go up the chain of command (with some changes). If there isn't an admin on at the time , you would contact your Senior first, in this case your Senior would be Slc97. If there is an admin on then just direct them to the player.

5.) You need to warn them and check their history. Also, as a mod you can't change variables so you would have to contact an admin+ for that.

6.) You won't be able to interact with the game much unless you are playing so if they refuse, you would end up banning them for disrespecting staff, metagaming, and requesting a jobbans for failing to follow job specific rules.

7.) You don't allow the squad medic to finish the surgery.

10.) You would note them immediately after talking to them and then ban them if they continued.

11.) You would probably ban the player if they went so far as to kill another player or a VERY harsh warning.

18.) Note him. Small note as well, mods are unable to send A.R.E.S. messages.
With all things considered, I going with neutral leaning towards -1.

Gotta agree with snype here, it looks like you don't really understand your role as a Moderator and considering this group of apps that's popped up yours doesn't really stick out in the crowd, -1.
Garth Pawolski, or is it Powalski?

App 3, delirium has set in but lets talk about this:
  • For question 1, you might want to check their prior note history before handing out any punishment.
  • For question 2, minor point but mods can't make announcements however back to the question. Make sure to include shuttle crashes as a don't touch but if there was a breach done via grief or by mistake, get it sealed up first then deal with the investigation. I like you thought of a scenario but the scenario you propose is quite unlikely to ever happen. A ban might be appropriate but most breaches I've seen are generally done by mistake and a note might be sufficient enough unless they have prior history of powergaming and you know they made a conscious effort at breach the ship.
  • For question 3, mods can't really spawn in their PCs at will. So you might be limited to admin pms
  • For question 4, make sure to note down the experience, if they are extremely rude to you needlessly .
  • For question 5, minor point but mods can't change PC names, so you would need an Admin+ online and ask them about it. Also if you change a PC's name, its only there as a temp, so it really doesn't fix the issue in the question. Also make sure to note down the incident and include the player's name
  • For question 6, with recent rule changes, this all will be dealt with ICly, so you can throw an mp a bone about the MT.
  • For question 7, don't allow him to finish it up. Also note him on the first incident, not the repeat of it.
  • For question 8, again can't make announcements but remember your job as as mod is to enforce the rules. You can give nudges but you shouldn't be pushing a side around. You can offer suggested courses of action but they can just outright ignore you.
  • For question 10, depending on whats done, I would suggest in the most likely of cases to let this be played out ICly and let the MPs deal with it.
  • For question 11, remember to factor in prior history on punishments
  • For question 14, you wouldn't know this but generally we only file permas on repeat offenders or very malicious people. Briefing shootings are pretty "low effort". Also minor point but if you applied a ban, a note wouldn't be required since when placing ban it will ask for a reason for the ban and that ban will be listed in the player's note.
  • For question 15, think there is a slight typo on this one but I think I got what you were saying and this is fine
  • For question 18, again can't make announcements but an looc in briefing room would be sufficient. Also make sure to note the commanding staff player who let that slip.
  • For question 19, this question is slightly vague and I would suggest listing all the possible scenarios for this and how you would deal with each one of those .
  • For question 21, might be a tad overzealous to mute them over something so minor.
Overall I'm going to say I'm neutral but leaning towards +1. There are some issues but these issues I can see being ironed out in the trial process.

Note: sorry for any nonsensical sentences or grammar, its 12:39 am and trying to get these apps done before sleeping.

Ok App, answers are iffy at times for a few reasons that have already been mentioned above, I'd say you've got the right direction of thought when it comes to a being a mod you just missed the path, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure you know what it means to be a moderator, HOWEVER! I still think we can sort our most of the problems during your trial period and if it doesn't work out you could always just become a mentor instead.

The fact that you haven't said a peep since this application is too much to worry about when it comes to forum activity or just activity in general.

Snype and Spoony make some excellent points between the two of them. You don't necessarily seem to fully grasp the position of moderator, but you do also seem to have a pretty standard grasp on the rules. While there are issues with this, I don't see them being issues that should warrant denial. I'm going to go ahead and +1 you and see how you handle your trial period.

The lack of responses by you in this thread is going to lead me to have to change my tentative +1 above to a -1. Showing this amount of disinterest to your own application makes me worry about the disinterest you would show slack and the forums as a moderator.

I hadn't realized I was supposed to reply to comments in my application. As for the fact that this is my only forum post, I haven't really needed a use for the forum, so I have never really posted in it. But either way, I do wish to thank all of those who took the time to read and reply to my post, either positive or negative. Those who said yes, for obvious reasons; and those who said no for providing me useful information in the event that I have to make a new application in the future. With that being said, I will retract my application.
