Tuzz - Moderator Application

Post by tuzz » 26 May 2017, 11:04

Byond ID: Tuzz

Colonial Marines Character: Tucker 'Tex' Owens

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Timezone: Central US

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 10-30+

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? I was a mod on a group of community Team Fortress 2 servers, and a prison themed Minecraft server

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? Not sure when the servers switched. I believe I played in the pre-alpha

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Eva's Battleground every once in a while, I used to play on Yogs before CM came out, but only been on there once in the past few months.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made: N/A

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for? No

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Yes, I use it already

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I would ask the player why he shot the other player and look at his notes. I would check the attack logs to see if anything prompted the shooting. If the shooting was warranted I would stop there and let the MPs deal with it. If it was not I would inform the player about the rules against griefing, add a note, and potentially a 3 hour ban depending on if they have been noted about this in the past. If the player that was shot didn't respond with lethal force I would ask a mod+ to heal them if they needed it.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
I would see what caused the breach. If it was caused by the shuttle or a pred bomb I would leave it. Otherwise, I would find out who caused it, and if it wasn't immediately obvious there was a valid reason for the breach, I would seal it. I would then ask the player why they breached the hull while I checked their notes. If it was intentional I would add a note and give them a 3 hour-1 day depending on how bad it was. If they had been noted for it in the past I would make it a 7 day ban and ask for a perma ban. If it was clearly accidental I would note it and warn them. If any players were killed by a breach made by accident or grief, I would ask a mod+ to heal them.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would ask if they needed help. If yes, I would ask a mentor to help them, if none were available I would help them myself, and perhaps ask for mentors to log on in Slack. If they respond that they do not need help then I would let them be.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I'd ask the player why they needed to talk to an admin. If it was an issue that needed an admin I would get the attention of one online or Slack if none were online. If it didn't need an admin I would help the player, and attempt to calm the player down.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would inform the player of the naming rules and ask them to change it next round, and add a note. If they argue I would apologize and reiterate that it is a rule and that just because we didn't notice their name till now doesn't mean that it wasn't against the rules before. If an admin+ was available I would ask if they could change the players name for them.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
As long as they weren't griefing I would let the MPs deal with it. If someone ahelps it I would take a closer look and remind the player of RP guidelines and potentially note their behavior.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would check their notes and let them know that medics aren't allowed to do surgery, and tell them to stop immediately. If they comply I might let them off with a note and warning. If they continue or they have done this in the past I would add a note and job ban them from medic.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I wouldn't. This falls more into an admin's responsibility, and I don't think I would have the have the right tools to deal with this ICly. As a mod my primary responsibility is to enforce the rules. If I felt it necessary I might ask an admin to encourage one side to push, or trigger an ERT or XRT.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I'd let the Iron Bear know that Marine vs antag combat is not considered ERG.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I'd let the MPs deal with it. If people start ahelping it I would check his notes and remind him of RP guidelines and add a note. If he has multiple notes about this behavour I would consider a 3-12 hour ban.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I'd check his notes, and check the logs to see what really happened. I'd ask both marines involved what happened. If it was indeed a case of improper escalation, I would add a note to the offending player and if they have done similar things in the past I would apply a 3 day ban.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
If an admin+ was online I would PM them asking for their help. If not, I would ask on Slack for an admin and mention a brief explanation of the problem.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
I'd inform the offending player about Rule 1 and warn them and add a note. If they have been noted for this multiple times in the past I would apply a 3-12 hour ban.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I would find out who was responsible and ban them for 3 days. If they had been noted for this in the past I would make the ban length 7 days and request a perma ban. I would then give ask a mod+ to heal those that were injured by the griefer if they did not respond lethally and if they needed it.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I would warn them not to do this, as they are wasting lives that other people could be using, and breaking RP guidelines, and add a note. If they have been noted for this in the past I would apply a job ban from xeno.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
If it was every once in a while I would ignore it. If it was constant I would ask the player to meme in moderation and add a note. If they have several notes about this I would apply a job ban.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I would tell the complaining player that saying "dropship" is fine, as in-game hivemind is an English translation of xenos thoughts.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I'd check the players notes and let them know that the automated distress does not indicate the reason it was sent. I'd warn them that giving this information is metagaming. I would add a note, and if they have been noted for this before I would apply a job ban.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
I'd check the notes of the player and ask the killed player to what happened. If the other player agrees that it was handled ICly I would warn him about doing this in the future, because generally killing other marines intentionally will get you in trouble. If the other marine DOES NOT agree it was done ICly, I would add a note and, if they have been noted for similar things, give them a 3-24 hour ban.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I'd let the staff member know immediately so that they may correct the mistake themselves.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I'd PM the offending staff member, letting them know what they are doing and why it is wrong, and ask them to stop. I would then inform a higher ranked staff member and, if the situation calls for it, file a staff report.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
Probably nothing if just one comment. If they continued I might PM them and remind them of rule 1. If they persisted I would note them and disable their ability to speak in OOC.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Please let me know what I can improve!

It took you 11 days to figure out mentors are useless. Good job.
Garth Pawolski, or is it Powalski?

Just to say this at the start, nothing personal but lets get to the app:
  • For question 1, remember misfires are also another possibilities, so keep that in mind before labeling it as grief. Also make sure note history is factored into the punishment.
  • For question 2, a perma might be a tad of a stretch for this one if there is repeated behavior, I would suggest just escalating the ban time accordingly due to prior history and maybe a perma if this has been a constant issue.
  • For question 4, depending how much of a hassle the player is a note might be needed.
  • For question 5, do keep in mind if they like their original name, they do have a chance to appeal it on the forums. Also its implied but just to be crystal clear make sure to include the "unacceptable name" in the note.
  • For question 7, remember to factor in prior history for this.
  • For question 11, 3 days might be a tad overzealous for this but again would depend on how much relevant notes they have on the subject.
  • For question 13, this question mostly hinges on whats said but if only one person was offended by it chances are it was quite tame. I would say approach this one with caution.
  • For question 18, for such a minor screw-up, I personally wouldn't advise a jobban unless they are doing some hardcore meta like "Lets setup a FOB at tablefort (which isn't possible anymore but seriously who thought that was an ok idea...)
  • For question 19, this question is really open for interpretation, even if the dead player feels like it was wrong if there was proper build up to it, it would be fine.
  • For question 21, it might be better to just let it go if its just in OOC.
This was a decent app but it falls into the double standard I have set for mentors since you guys generally see how we deal with issues up close and have a general idea of our tools and capabilities. I'm going to say I'm neutral due to the fact, you've only been on staff for 11 days however this could change.

Also if you want to privately discuss anything about this app or any other things, just PM me, somewhere. This applies to anyone, really.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't gotten much experience with seeing punishments yet and was hoping to ask staff more about it and look into recent bans to get a better idea about it if I made it the trial stage. I, of course, would always look at notes (and the seriousness of those notes) before giving out any punishment.

Now normally I'd be iffy against mentor applications for mod since as Spoony (And as a side not real quick Spoony said all there needs to be said on the questions/answers) said they get a better view of what will and won't get you banned however I feel like this kind of case is the acception since you've only been a mentor for only 11 days which is still a good amount of time but as you say yourself above you haven't gotten much experience with seeing punishments yet but the fact that you want to bump up to mod is good since it shows that you've taken a good amount of interest on being part of the staff team.

From your actions in game, I'd say you would be a good choice. +1

If anyone ever reviews this while making a mod application in the future, don't highlight things in yellow. I like differentiating colors between question and answer, but the yellow is terrible to see out of the corner of my eyes.

As for your app. You've been a mentor for a short amount of time. But you've been a player for long enough. Mentor is a decent quick step below moderator. It gives you a chance to see behind the scenes, and it's your time overall time combined with your answers that matters to me. My largest concern in your app was some of the escalation of punishment, however Spoony addressed it and anything else. You can learn time adjustments easily enough, and you've been a good mentor. You have my +1.

Normally, I would outright -1 a moderator application from a mentor who has been a mentor for such a short period of time.

Given that we have had multiple openings on the team, and we are on the precipice of Greytide Mountain, I'm going to make an exception and +1 you. Do not make me regret it.
