Chandlerkun - Moderator Application

Post by KEY » 03 Oct 2017, 20:22

Byond ID: Chandlerkun

Colonial Marines Character: Rick Rhee

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Timezone: EST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?: I'm on byond almost every night for a few good hours, in total it'd add up to quite a lot. Like at least 15 a week.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?: Yes, I've adminned on DBR (Roleplay Rebirth) and was head admin of Messatsu Realms for about a year. I've also been an assistant manager at a Jimmy Johns, if that counts?

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?: Nope.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?: CM is the only server I play on for SS13.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
http://cm-ss13.com/viewtop ... --Predator Whitelist, Denied.
http://cm-ss13.com/viewtop ... 42&t=14713 ---Commander Whitelist, Approved.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?: No, not at the moment

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?: Nope, never even been banned at all.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?: Nope, still never been banned.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?: Yup.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.

-If it was just a minor shot and it's being treated as IC already by the players and the injuries are nothing that will remove the victim from the round and are overall a relatively small issue, just give the player a warning about it and ask that they don't do it again in the future.
-If it was a major shot, and affected more than one person, I'd heal the players who were hurt and give yet again, a stern warning to the aggressor.
-If it was a shot that was beyond two people, it would become clear it wasn't an accident and the victims would be healed, the event would be said to not be IC, the player would receive a 24 hour ban and the behavior would be added into their notes.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.

-If this breach was created by Xeno metagaming acid walling or rogue MT's/players just messing around and breaking the rules here, the breach would be fixed and those who died would be revived. The aggressors would also receive a warning and possibly a ban based on their attitude/awareness of what they have done.
-If the breach was due to something like the dropship hitting the Alaymer, I consider that IC and it becomes an IC problem.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.

-I'd PM them if they needed help as they seem new to the game, and keep up a chat with them referrng to the guides, rules, and the basics of putting on armor and moving to briefing. I'd keep tabs on this player throughout the round to make sure they were fitting in well and offer additional help on Discord if their newness is that dire.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
-I'd ask them to calm down and assure them that i'll fix their situation. If the situation really does call for an admin to be present, i'll go poke an admin to help out. Otherwise, as long as it's in my power to do so, I will work to fix their situation. If they continue to be rude outright and unaccepting of help, they will get a warning, if they continue at that point they may receive a minor ban and the behavior will be added to their notes.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule
.
-If a player has been using their name for several years, I'll ask them to change the name to something similar but not exactly what it is as it stands. I'll try to compromise with them to the rules but if it gets to a point where they absolutely refuse to obey the rules and change their name, they might receive a light ban until their ready to comply. Also this behavior would be added to their notes.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
-PM them to ask what they believe themselves to be doing, and if the answer is anything less than " A Russian bear boarded the Alaymer and threatened to shoot me if I didn't put this on and run down this hall" they'll get slept, the items removed, and they'll be warned about doing it again. If they repeat the offense, they will receive a light ban and the behavior will be added to their notes.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
-I'd inform the medic that medic's do not possess the IC capabilities to peform surgery, only to treat basic wounds and medical problems that the marines might find on the battlefield. If they argued with me, i'd give them a light ban of maybe 24 hours, job-ban them from the role and all other medical roles since they don't understand the guidelines for the area, and add the behavior into their notes.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
- For the marines, if mod's have access to this---I'd have ARES encourage the commanding officers to charge forward and end it because the USCM needed their presence elsewhere in the solar system.
-For the aliens, I'd use the Queen Mother Psyche Directive to order the aliens to give one big final push, and hope to either slay/infect them all or die with honor for the hive.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
-It's not grief in my opinion if you are on two opposing sides, it's only when marines are shooting at nothing/eachother that i'd consider it EORG. If an alien attacked someone after the round ended, it's common sense to me that the marines would shoot back, and the same can be said with IRON BEAR's.
-I'd apologize to the IRON BEAR nonetheless about it, and state that he was a hostile and that the IC was still going on.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
-If the case is exactly what was stated above the'd receive a 24 hour ban and the behavior would be added to their notes.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
-Inform him that a punch is not a green pass to go blasting off your gun, heal the marine who was killed, and warn the both of them about grief. Also the behavior would be added to notes.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
-Use SLACK to inform a admin if one is around that there is a need for their abilities. In the meantime if the players are growing impatient, i'd inform them that we are doing everything to mend the situation to the best of our abilities and ask for their patience, thanking them in the process.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
-I'd warn the person who made the comment as people were being offended, and if they stopped I'd consider the situation solved. If they continued or argue'd, they would receive a light ban and the behavior would be added to their notes.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
-The player would receive a rather heavy ban, possibly even a perma ban. The situation would be written in their notes in great detail and they'd have to make an appeal on the forums to explain why they did this and how they've changed, if they wish to continue playing the game.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
-PM them to ask why they would do that, and if the answer isn't "Queen asked me to come to her but i got caught on the way" they'll receive a warning and possibly a xeno job-ban depending on their attitude.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
-Message them about with a warning about memeing/UnRPINg in the hivemind. If they accept and apologize, in my opinion the situation is fine. If they argue or continue they will receive a xeno job-ban and the behavior will be added to their notes.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
-I'd ask the xeno player to call it a bird, metal dragon, shuttle as they have no way of knowing that it's a dropship from the Alaymer. It's not really a big deal though in my opinion as Hivemind is just the xeno translation of english, and as long as the player isn't saying things like "we need to board the alaymer on the alamo" i'd consider it a rather minor issue.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
-Pm them a warning about meta gaming and explain to them what they did wrong, and as long as they apologized i'd consider the situation solved. If they however decided to argue or be difficult, the would receive a command job-ban and also a light full ban. The behavior would...as you guessed, be added to their notes.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
-I'd revive the dead marine and give the aggressor a warning about self-antagging, because at that point it's what I'd consider it. If they argued, they'd receive a job-ban and a light full ban with the behavior added to their notes.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
-I'd double check to be sure that he was indeed wrong and ask the fellow staff member about it while informing the player of the correct information.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
-Make notes, screenshots, and actual documented evidence of it to present to a higher up staff member so it's not just me annoying them and accusing people without proof.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
-Give him a light ban for being toxic that will lift in a few hours when he wants to be mature. If he comes back changed, the situation is solved. If he continues to grief towards other players and be hateful, the ban will become a perma ban.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
I understand the Ckey needs to be the same as the forum account. I didn't intend on applying for Moderator when I made my forum account, so if it's possible to somehow change my forum account name to Chandlerkun that'd be appreciated. If not, then I apologize for this oversight.

Far too ban heavy if I'm honest, your answer to 21 makes this rather evident considering the bloke hasn't even broken a rule properly.

Sidenote: Re-read server rules and xeno rp rules, we've got no issue with xenos calling the dropship by its real name.

Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to make an application, I'll read over your answers to weigh in on what you've answered.

1. Would you message the player if you came to the conclusion it was a misfire?
2. Any kind of atmos fuckery does need to be handled with a firm hand, intentionally more so as while it's usually impossible to accidentally cause a breach it is very rarely possible still.
3. Don't ever forget about the availability of mentors!

6. This doesn't require any immediate intervention as it's an IC issue, the only risks you really have to worry about are A) They try to kill somebody (Not that likely but I've seen it before.) B) They're trying to deploy (Usually without permission) It may be worth chatting to them if it's a constant thing but at most it's just acting out of character.
7. Do you let them finish with the surgery?
8. Moderators don't get access to ARES, but you can make Queen Mother reports. I tend to find a subtle message works just as well.
9. Shooting at a wall isn't EORG.
10. This doesn't require a ban, I think that in this case you should observe to see what they're doing and possibly talk to the marine but jumping straight to a ban is unwarranted.
11. Punching somebody once isn't grief, especially if there's something that may have occurred leading up to the situation.

13. Players are allowed some leeway for acting offensive IC.
14. Would you file for perma if the player had no other notices on their account before this action?

17. Are you sure that this case requires intervention? While the xenos shouldn't know it's exact name, does it really matter?
18. Are you confident that a job ban is potentially on the cards for a one time offence?
19. Don't you think that perhaps there might be some investigation you could perform further? Remember that as a moderator you'd have access to server logs and the ability to PM players to further your questioning.

21. Players can get salty quite quickly, are you confident that one joke about your parents made possibly as a joke is worth a ban?

Overall I'd say I'm neutral right now as I feel as though you're a little quick to interact with players when observing a situation first would be useful and often you jump from day bans to perma which seems a little hefty. I'd really suggest reconsidering how you approach punishing players.

I'd like to pose a few more questions for your consideration, feel free to answer these in your own time.

A) A marine sets off a grenade in the requisitions line, another marine then shoots him with a shotgun pointblank and kills him.

B) A marine is walking around to find SSD'd players and is stuffing them into disposals.

C) A marine ahelps from the brig claiming he's no idea what he's done to end up inside, he's got a forty minute sentence and and the MP that brought him in has gone out on patrol again leaving the brig empty.

Hello Chandlerkun,

I'll start with the traditional questions and comments on your answers.

__
1. Does you check the shooter's notes at all?
5. They're. Why do you care if he changes the name to something similar or something completely different? Why does the fact he's saying he's used it for a long time change the way you deal with the situation? What does it mean to "compromise with a player to the rules"? Should you be doing it?
6. What rule did he break? You do have the sleep verb as a mod, but you can't remove items. Well, not easily. Is sleeping the guy really necessary?
7. At this point, I've got the feeling you want to ban anyone who argues with you. I don't like that idea. What exactly do you mean by "argue with me"? We generally go something along the lines of 3h - 12h -24h - 7days for ban length. What do you do it they don't "argue"? Do you check their notes?
9. No need to apologise, there is no way this is your fault.
10. What rule did he break? 24h is a long ban, see 7. Again, writing notes is good, but there's not much point if you don't read them.
11. Why are you warning the guy that got killed??? Do you not investigate the situation a little further? check logs? Explain how proper escalation works? blabla check their notes. No ban? You would the guy in 10. for 24h but that guy just gets a warning? He killed someone...
13. What rule did they break? Do you really think you can run an international-ish community and rounds with 100+ people on without anyone getting offended by another person's comments, in character? How is this a problem?
14. Procedure for perma is 7day ban and make a request. Mods don't decide if they get permad or unbanned, bigmins do that. Do you check their history at all?
15. Is this seriously the only answer you deem acceptable? Is their attitude really that important?
16. You would jobban a guy from xeno for a few memes? Did you read this : http://cm-ss13.com/viewtop ... 57&t=14800?
17. If "hivemind is just the xeno translatio of english", then why do you ask the player to call it something else?
19. Do you value RP situations at all? Isn't it a perfectly realistic situation? what rule did they break?
20. You might want to let the staff member inform the player, generally avoid intervening when someone else is dealing with an issue.
__

Making notes is necessary, useful, good. But don't forget to read them! There's no point otherwise! And much more importantly, use them! You don't deal with someone breaking a minor rule the same way is he's a known shitler that's accumulated bans and notes or if it's a new player learning the ropes, don't you think?

Don't be a hardass. There will be times when you are wrong. Players telling you why hey break the rules is a good thing, it lets you understand their point of view and explain stuff to them. Don't mod with the idea that whoever disagrees with you gets banned. Getting that feeling from your application.

This is a medium RP server, do you enjoy roleplaying at all? RP situations are valuable and mods should preserve them. Sometimes, things just go wrong. This will happen in game too, and it's fine. You don't have to fix everything.

We have MPs and marine law for minor issues, let them deal with them. You can even help them if you feel it's necessary, Subtle Message them the location of crimes for example. Do you play as MP?

Ban times are very harsh, but I don't mind, you can easily ajust them.

-1 from me. Too ban heavy, not taking history in account when making decisions, doesn't seem to consider RP as important, misunderstanding of some rules.

Thanks for reading.
Player PM from player/(Larva (247)) (?): It's totally realistic to challenge someone to do boxing for a mouse trap, in the middle of a alien occupation.

Hi Chandlerkun, thanks for applying for Mod, best of luck. I'll personally look at your situation questions and give my own thoughts/opinions on it.

1. If it's being treated as IC, and dealt with by MP and so on, there's no reason to give a warning. I'd let it go and MAYBE add it to notes depending on if it's severe enough. If the player is more "griefy", I'd definitely give the warning + add to notes. Ban times are pretty subjective to the mod, and depending on the person's note history, 24 hrs might be too excessive, or it might require more.
2. The one issue with breaches is that xenos are unaffected by cold and void air. So xenos could easily take advantage and simply hide in there, while marines can't do anything without o2 and a hardsuit. It would be wise to simply fix the breach regardless of cause. Good answer otherwise.
3. Great :]
4. Fine answer. Your response to a player's attitude if yours to choose, but often you have to ignore them since you will deal with salty/pissed off people.
5. A warning should be given before you give a ban, always. Unless a severe rule break has occurred. Otherwise, fine answer.
6. This issue is most definitely going to be an IC issue. You can't be bothered to deal with all marine law breaks, that's MPs job. Allowing him to do so will give MP more to do, thus increasing RP. If he doesn't do anything with the gun, then I'd say let him go. Having a gun out when it's code green is a marine law violation.
7. Your ban time is a little excessive, plus you include a jobban. The typical starting ban time is 3 hrs unless notes/behavior prompts you to give more. I'd start with a warning first of all, as doing it for the first time usually warrants a warning [imo]. If you choose to skip the warning, that's fine too, but never forget you can/should warn before you go straight for a ban.
8. For marines, no ARES is not within mod capabilities. Subtle messages would be best to keep RP, and PMs if you feel it's totally necessary. Subtle messages would work for the queen as well, but the hive mother report is also good.
9. You should have read the rule on EORG. It's not a rule break if there's combat with enemies, even after the round ends. Refer to rule #7. No apology is needed, and you should refer to that IRON BEAR that it still holds. No need for common sense if it's a rule :]
10. Do you go straight to a ban? This is probably your weakest answer... PM him #1 if he's not harming people. If he is, sleep him, PM him inquiring. Check his notes and give a suitable punishment from there. If it's his first time breaking rules, then a warning might be in order depending on how much damage he did. You should realize banning is the LAST option... Never the first.
11. This case is called unnecessary escalation. The marine escalated the situation too far for simply a punch. They're pretty common. The marine punching him may not be grief and might not warrant a warning/note adding. 1 punch is not grief.
12. Fine answer.
13. Gotta leave IC humor to IC humor. Jokes are jokes and unless that person is literally attacking someone, then it's not particularly a rule break. Offensive humor is part of life, and people shouldn't get banned for it. You got to be more chill, talk to the person who was offended first, tell them to calm down as well. It's a game, and just making jokes, in general, isn't attacking anyone. Only 1 person is offended, 9/10 are fine with it, doesn't warrant a warning, or a ban. An addition of notes to his account is more suitable depending on what is said.
14. Look at notes, make sure he isn't a repeat offender. Permabans are for frequent rule breakers or really heavy rule breaks. A ban is definitely the first option I'd choose since he griefed then logged.
15. Fair answer, suicide isn't taken lightly.
16. The rule is a warning, which you said. If they do it a 2nd time, it's a ban of 3 hrs. Fine answer otherwise.
17. Regardless of what they say, even if they do say what you quoted, it's not an issue. Xenos don't actually speak and thus anything we "say" is an approximation of hive mind telepathy. Even if they used human terms the entire game like "The Marines are heading to CIC" or whatever, not an issue.
18. Wouldn't jobban over an incident of metagaming. The commander would potentially lose his whitelist over stuff like that. Give him a warning if he/she doesn't comply and move on.
19. Straight to punishment. You didn't analyze the situation, or PM either side asking what happened. The marine might actually have a solid RP reason, and you simply ignore that and go straight to punishment. Assess the situation before you punish people...
20. Good answer.
20a. Good.
21. Once again, goes straight for punishment. You didn't ASK they stop before? Once again, a ban is a final resort... not your first action.

So there are my answers... Overall, much of it is good, however, I have some major issues. You're too aggressive in your handling of situations. Many of these can be handled by talking to people or simple warning. You often jump the gun and go straight for banning people without looking at notes, PMing, or investigating anything. As a mod you need to be analytical, you can't go ban crazy. Your ban times are a little excessive, and I feel you didn't really read the rules that well. You would have to know how to properly act otherwise. I feel you didn't read the admin protocols either as you're severely neglecting the power of PMing, investigating and notes.

Overall... My summary is you're too aggressive, and I feel you'd simply argue with everyone, ban everything, and not take any shit.

So my rating is -1.

That's your choice. Regardless, come back again in the future. I suggest you really learn the rule/admin protocols and put effort into the app. Follow the admin protocols when answering the questions and you'll be fine. Really what made me -1 you is your attitude when approaching a situation and your willingness to just ban everything.

Good luck in the future.

Review where you went wrong and try again in 30 days if you want. Not like you're gonna be the first or last person to not get accepted on their first application.
Ban Appeal Users: If I've lifted your perma ban and you're still unable to log onto the server, send me a forum PM regarding it and I'll work to get it fixed in ~24 hours.
