REYZUNAKI - Moderator Application

Post by Unbiased Viking » 26 Oct 2017, 11:56

Byond ID: REYZUNAKI

Colonial Marines Character: Larry 'Stemz' Shinoba

Age: 28

Gender: M

Timezone: CST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 15-20

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? Yes

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? Yes

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Shinobi Saga and CM is the only things I currently play on BYOND, although there was a time I played Dragon Universe

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made: N/A

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? Not on any server just currently in irl.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for? No

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Yes

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I would get a count of all parties involved and annotate names, check their annotations/notes and see whom has a pattern for this behavior. I would then find out how many shots was fired and why and go from there. If only 1 shot it was likely a mistake, if I come to a conclusion of grief, I would warn the individual and make the appropriate annotations/notes on that character, if this is the second time I would punish that individual starting with 3 hours.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
I would immediately plug the breach, placing additional hull sections where the breach event happened, depending on mood, I may heal/revive some folk for the inconvenience as it should have never happened to begin with.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would pm that player to return to cryogenics whilst concurrently contacting a mentor to assist the player.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
Keep calm whilst people are being rude to you is something I deal with everyday as a supervisor IRL, keep calm and see the light at the end of the tunnel. I would attempt too gather the bulk of the complaint and help the person anyhow. The fact that once people feel accommodated, they typically settle down in my experience.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would simply warn that person, annotate the name and the occurance. I would then make sure that regardless of what happened in the past, we are talking about the present and that it isn't allowed, I would then tell the player, continue this round, the beginning of the next round it needs to be changed. If round start comes around and it hasn't been changed, I would punish the player.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I see this as an exclusive IC and MP issue. Although, I may make a note of it so the behavior can be further tracked and identify and patterns that exist.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would pm the person the rules link, I would inform them of their unauthorized activity, making an annotation and letting that person off with a warning, afterward if caught again, I would issue a job ban.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I would send a High Command message telling them of their 'unworthiness' as marines, give them a remote bio count whilst on the other hand, I would tell the Aliens as Queen mother, pull it together, you almost have the planet and for continued existence we must drive the tallhost invaders from our rightful home. IF this doesn't work I may send a Shuttle with a moderate amount of hostile to jumpstart the marines frame of mind.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
Marines vs. Hostile after round end is valid, I would inform and may monitor the individual reported.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I would put that person to sleep where they stood and PM him for justification, however, I would lean toward a job ban after informing the player of what griefing is and the rule behind it.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I would job ban him and issue an 3 hour ban. I would then refer the player to the rules on the forums, after telling him the justification for their actions are not valid.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I would attempt to contact a Admin via in-game channels if none are online I would attempt to contact a admin via Slack, detailing the exact situation in the process.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
I would PM the player involved citing the racism clause, keeping that player mindful of their actions and that they are now walking a fine line. However, if only 1 out of 10 are complaining I would allow the immersion to continue and proceed with the round as no one has died as a result. I would also pm the person whom complained as they would know their complaint was noted and dealt with.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I would permaban this individual, griefing and ban evasion exists in this scenario. I would also notify all staff of what took place.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I would add a note, pm the player, explain his actions help unbalance the round and depending on the history of the player, issue a 3 hour ban and a xeno job ban.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I would issue an warning and a 3 hour ban to that player, annotate on the character file, next occurance, I would issue a xeno job ban.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I would allow the phrase to exist if the alien saw a group of marines use it to transport to and from the planet. It would be a valid term as the Xeno is not memeing. I would inform the complainer of this fact.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I would pm that command staffer, "meta gaming is not allowed, information has not yet been discovered", annotate the event and issue an official warning, job banning on the next occurrance of that behavior from that player.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
I would issue an advisory to the player and issue an 24 hour ban. The players could have easily rested to solve the problem.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would attempt to get clarification and inform that staffer of the mistake, respectfully, if the problem persists over the next several days, I would move the situation to a higher ranked staff member.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I would report the event, in its entirety, to an admin or head admin.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I would ignore it, if it persisted I would OOCly message him or her of their actions, issuing a warning in the process, OR depending on how vulgar, issue a 24 hour ban on the spot, annotating the occurance in that player's file.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
I have been playing this game for years now, under the Byond Key REYZUNAKI and Unbias. I look forward to being able to further participate within this community, thanks.

I'm very discouraged by your lack of citing prior notes in situations. You're also very heavy handed which can be both good and bad, but dropping bans immediately isn't always the answer. You also rarely mention PMing players to get the full story and instead act very reactively to situations.

For now, I've gotta say -1.

Also.... You know you can't use more than one account, right?

My overview of your application:
► Show Spoiler
-1 from me, many answers are completely off-mark and an adequate knowledge of the rules for the purposes of moderation has not been displayed here in my opinion. Many answers are heavy-handed, and have inadequate investigation into the events or people involved.

All in all i'm leaning towards a -1 on this, Alot of your methods of dealing with situations are very heavy handed. That aside there is also the issue of using multiple ckey's, This stuff definitely isn't allowed.

1. What steps would you follow to determine it was grief?

2. You make no mention of investigating the cause? Saying it's not supposed to happen isn't relevant, it does, either by DR, or players still find ways to breach, usually Accidently, sometimes not. Also, I wouldn't heal any affected players,

3. Why tell them to return to cryo? Also, if there are no mentored online, what would you do then?

4. Whilst this is mostly ok, players will not always calm down, even when spoken to in a cool, professional manner.

5. Mostly good, but punish them how?

6. Fine, but it wouldn't hurt to perhaps SM an MP, if they're not all busy.

7. What steps would you take regarding the patient, as in what would you tell them to do? Also, assuming you caught the medic mid surgery, what would you tell them?

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other
Mods can send faxes in response, not directly. Mods cannot trigger bio scans, unless you mean literally telling whoever you are talking to an amount, in which case you have to be extremely careful. Your QM response is OK, but the question states that marines won't leave the ship, so it's safe to assume they already lost the planet. Finally, Mods cannot force ERT beacons.

9. Fine, but why monitor the accused player?

10. Way too harsh on this one.

11. No mentions of checking their notes, if this is their first incident what would you do?

12. OK, but if no admins respond?

13. Thus is fine, but I'm curious to how you think somebody could die in this incident

14. Permaban is excessive, I would apply a 3 day ban, there is no evidence of ban evasion, and why would you notify all staff?

15. Fine

16. Excessive, why a ban on the first offence?

17. Ok.

18. Ok.

19. This one is just... wrong. You're applying a ban, without checking for RP, previous notes, and you state that "the players could have easily rested to resolve the problem" which is incorrect, the pods take only 3 people, any more and they explode.

20. This is OK.

20a. Wrong. This should be reported to the Senior mod, senior admin, or senior mentor, depending on the rank of the person in question

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
To be honest, I'd just ignore it all the time.

You lack detail, placing bans when there shouldn't be bans, make little to no mention of notes in many cases, and have basically no other posts.
With that in mind, I'm going to have to give you a -1 on this app.

Too many heavy-handed responses as mentioned, as well as the issue with using two accounts.

What's this about using two accounts? You're aware that using more than one account is against the server rules, correct?

"No ban evading Defined as attempting to log into the server with a different account after one account was banned. This results in your current punishment being upgraded to a PERMABAN. DO NOT use a different account to avoid previous bans, job-bans and note history. ALERT Staff to transfer over your previous accounts history to your new account. NO EXCEPTIONS!"

So, I have a few concerns (these are not numbered in relation to your answers):

1) Many of your answers to the application seem really heavy handed; for example in (16) as I understand your answer, you're not so much warning the person as you are giving them notice that they just landed a 3hr ban ("a warning and a 3 hour ban") for saying "reee" before you've looked at their notes.

2) In many of the questions you don't appear to mention that you would check the persons' notes before deciding upon what action or how harsh an action to take. While I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt on this because you do make a point to say that you would leave notes, the parts where you take notes always seem to be at the point you've already decided upon the action to take, or after you've taken action.

3) Neither of the accounts you mentioned above had the notes transferred from one to the other; that's not really a big deal on it's own (Doesn't look like you used either name to evade bans or to multikey, and one of your accounts had no notes at all. I went ahead and copied them over just now so it's done), but is something you should have taken care of before making an application for a staff position so you could ensure you were complaint with the rules yourself.

5) On the topic of compliance with rules, you joined a round 8 days ago (at the time of this post) with the name Sarah Palin according to your notes on Reyzunaki. Assuming you have indeed been around for years, why join with a name that clearly does not fit the naming rule after so long? What happened here? Did you just forget to switch out a meme name from a hunter games round?

Looking forward to hearing back from your responses to these issues, as well as the criticisms laid out by the other staff above.

I understand, I was also under the impression that any interaction with a player you must read their notes to gather a good idea of that player, so I understand why my lack of mentions of note follow-up were a concern, however, heavy handed? I followed the rules to determine my answers and a 3 hour ban in "my" opinion is actually not that bad. A person would miss one round, simmer in the situation and probably never commit that infraction again. And as far as punishment, I would think it would be easy enough to guide the new Mods that you bring on, so the whole heavy handed part is kinda "iffy". I know I didn't mention this but I was Army for 7 years, I can follow instructions.. well. So a simple head admin elightening me wouldn't be an issue.

No, I won't lie, it[Name] had nothing to do with hunter games. I joined under Sarah Palin under the presumption political figures were fair game, I see a "Bill Carson" all the time, no one blinks an eye. I expressed this to the admin and s/he told me to change, next round it was. I have never been a trouble maker, was just trying to have some laughs.

As far as the two accounts go, you should be able to see when each was in use , there was a time when I played exclusively on the BYOND key Unbias, some time passed and while playing Shinobi Saga, I developed the new key REYZUNAKI - it was literally my toons name in server, which I now use [its the one with my Byond sub] so I use this now, I know I shouldn't use two accounts to play CM and I never have. I took time to read the rules, don't worry, just concerned with the cynical response on that one.

I don't really get how my answers were taken out of context, I will expound more when I apply again in a month or so... In efforts to not ruin any culture you all have built in the community, I quite frankly respect the decision, although I appreciate you all giving my app a look through and the feedback given.

I will address some questions presented to me.

1. What steps would you follow to determine it was grief?
Well, for the record, I would sleep them. I would check their note/log to try to establish a pattern with all involved parties. Afterwards, I would pm the involved parties and ask, "What was the cause of this and take everyone's statement to plug the gaps in the narrative. I would check the chat/fight logs and determine who did what "first", if it all matches I would hold that person accountable and issue a warning accordingly.

2. You make no mention of investigating the cause? Saying it's not supposed to happen isn't relevant, it does, either by DR, or players still find ways to breach, usually Accidently, sometimes not. Also, I wouldn't heal any affected players,
I understand, my only experiences with this was when the DS lands in a bad place on the ship. Healing people I see as fair since it shouldn't have happened. Not really heavy handed either in my opinion.

3. Why tell them to return to cryo? Also, if there are no mentored online, what would you do then?
I would tell them to return to Cryo because, that's a better rp location for the experience the player is having, he's butt naked, fresh out of cryo, any passing marine may stop and help the new guy. If there is no mentor online, I would have no choice but the help the new player myself, that or watch the chaos that ensues.

4. Whilst this is mostly ok, players will not always calm down, even when spoken to in a cool, professional manner.
Acknowledged.

5. Mostly good, but punish them how?
With the warning already logged in the file and the fact that they willingly did the 'exact' same thing again, I would issue an 3 hour ban, notate and move from there. The bans would get progressively worse.

6. Fine, but it wouldn't hurt to perhaps SM an MP, if they're not all busy.
Acknowledged

7. What steps would you take regarding the patient, as in what would you tell them to do? Also, assuming you caught the medic mid surgery, what would you tell them?
In all seriousness, I would probably kill the marine for rp validness depending on which type of surgery was being performed, the message gets across after the death, as it should be rp valid. Annotate the event on the medics notes, pm and confront the medic and the lesson should be learned. All while remaining in an active scene with little disruption committed.

Acknowedged, most of the things you listed in your response, only a working staff member would know, thank you for the heads up. Therefore, I think a Fax, QM message and the right bug in the CDR/XO's ear may get the job done.

9. Fine, but why monitor the accused player?
Because people complain for a reason, a person can never be too sure. I believe in following-up with all actions taken.

10. Way too harsh on this one.
After relooking at this scenario, I acknowledge that it may have been too harsh, however, griefing is something that I experience a lot as a player and want to see ended. A simple warning would suffice.

11. No mentions of checking their notes, if this is their first incident what would you do?
Well in this scenario, notes definantly would have to be taken into account. If it was the first time, however, I would probably sleep the person and we would have a literal discussion since the player obviously does not know the rules, wherein I would detail and link the rules, tell him literally what they did wrong and move forward with the round. However, if its not their first offense I believe a job ban is a valid solution.

12. OK, but if no admins respond?
I will have to do what I can at my echelon with the tools available to me, if its an rp issue, I may issue a fax to redirect command and let it trickle down that way. Or I could pm the leader of the group directly to simply redirect and continue mission.

13. Thus is fine, but I'm curious to how you think somebody could die in this incident.
I think it, because the rules warned of it. I must have the ability to follow the rules to the exact and take all precaution wherein. It's not that I think death would happen, its that, the rules have add on measures if that was the case is all. --" Occasionally being racist or being a dick to another player in-game is fine so long as it's not excessive and it doesn't result in character death (such as, refusing medical treatment leading to a death because you didn't like someone). "

14. Permaban is excessive, I would apply a 3 day ban, there is no evidence of ban evasion, and why would you notify all staff?
Because, I would have taken it as ban evasion, unfortunately I am unfamiliar with what took you have to track persons, therefore I would advise all staff, so that we may keep our eyes open for the evading Byond Key. I need you all to understand, I don't know what exact tools you all have to complete your jobs, some of these questions takes imagination.

15. Fine

16. Excessive, why a ban on the first offence?
I have seen this approach in the past, I played Xeno ALOT once upon a time, I thought it was a valid approach.

17. Ok.

18. Ok.

19. This one is just... wrong. You're applying a ban, without checking for RP, previous notes, and you state that "the players could have easily rested to resolve the problem" which is incorrect, the pods take only 3 people, any more and they explode.
I have rarely actually used the escape pod, maybe once, I had no idea explosion was an actual thing, more of a dead chat urban legend.

20. This is OK.

20a. Wrong. This should be reported to the Senior mod, senior admin, or senior mentor, depending on the rank of the person in question
I am used to chain of command and working it up the chain, I acknowledge the desired actions that need to be taken.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
To be honest, I'd just ignore it all the time.

Even with your clarifications, I'm in a position where I have to maintain my -1.

You seem willing to learn, which is good, but you seem more like you would benefit from in-game learning right now than on the job learning. I think you need to get a better grasp of some of our more modern mechanics as well as some of our more recent rules updates. As someone who has been around a while myself, I get it. It's easy to get stuck in old mechanics and how the rules used to be enforced, but we've taken a much more rehabilitative stance over punishment in the last few months, and I don't see you as having a grasp on that.

The two accounts is also something that still bothers me. I would recommend that you stay on just the one account and quit using the second altogether. I would recommend you reapply in like 2 or 3 months, if you continue to play regularly in that time, when you have a better handle on everything.

Using 2 accounts, is against staff policy as we don't allow multi-keying.

You will need to make that change if you are accepted, and it may be something that stops you from being accepted.

I understand what you all are saying, however, I told you all that for transparency purposes. I no longer actually use the account. This account, Reyzunaki, has my Byond sub. I no longer use the other account, I also stated Unbias, to prove my history/experience of playing since I know the one I currently use is fairly new. I just want to be clear I no longer use my other account, it would suck for that to be held against me.
