BrandonSacawv - Moderator Application

Colonial Marines Character: Cameron Pratt

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Timezone: MST (Mountain Time Zone, USA), I fluctuate between UTC-6:00 and UTC-7:00 due to no daylight savings here.

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? Well I believe I normally play 8+ hours per week, depending on my college classes, and I'd be available to moderate all of those house.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? Most certainly, I was staff at a small SS13 server called GGL which is long dead. I have a lot of staff experience in Garry's Mod, and ArmA 3.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? I don't believe so.

What other servers do you play on? Paradise or other random ones when CM is low pop.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Paradise is the ONLY other one I've consistently played in a while. If I have the SS13 itch but CM and Paradise are not populated, I'll usually just chose a random one. I used to play a lot of Apollo back when it was popular though.

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? Nope.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? Nope.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? Nope.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)? Nope.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Yes.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.

1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
Obviously my actions would heavily depend on if he is simply shooting at a wall or other non-player object, or if he is shooting marines. If he is shooting at random stuff, I would like to allow MPs to handle the event in-character as roleplay, instead of interrupting roleplay. Now, if he is obviously griefing, and won't go along with roleplay or starts shooting those MPs, I'd handle it as griefing. If he was shooting people from the get-go, I'd handle it as griefing. With either course, I'd follow the established staff protocols.

2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
As with the above question, this has a lot to do with how it occurred. If someone randomly decided to destroy or deconstruct a wall without a legitimate roleplay purpose, then I would handle it as griefing, following the established staff protocols. If for whatever reason the breach occured due to a legitimate reason, such as a firefight after Aliens have boarded, then I believe I would not take action. We have Maintenance Techs and hardsuits for a reason.

3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.

As a moderator, I would be unable to pass the codes along without approval from a head staff member. Obviously, if that head staff member approves it, I would hand them over. If they do not approve them, then the marines don't get them- simple.

4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.

I feel that it is important to consider everyone's intent in this situation. If the researcher had a legitimate roleplay reason to develop napalm grenades, I would look past the actual manufacture- however, the researcher should be held responsible for giving them to someone who griefs with them. The researcher should be handing them out to qualified and trustworthy personnel, not just any random who comes and asks for one.

Now, with the marine throwing one into logistics, I would likely question him around the basis of griefing. I believe it would require extremely dire circumstances to deploy a napalm grenade into logistics, such as if Aliens had boarded and the marines were heavily losing, and for some reason logistics needed to be burned. In most situations however, doing so seems like it would be griefing. As with the other situations, I would follow the established staff protocols on handling the player.

5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.

I am pretty good at keeping my cool, as I understand that when you are staff, people may be pre-disposed to act out against you as they may resent you or punishments they have received in the past. I would politely ask the player to stop being disrespectful, and to explain the issue that they are experiencing. If they persist with being disrespectful, I would mute them per the rules. I would do my best however to navigate their issue and to calm them down without escalating to punishment if possible.

6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.

I would ask them to chose a new name that fits our guidelines, providing suggestions if they can't come up with any. Additionally, although it is not a punishment per-say, I would add it into the player's notes in-case they are caught doing it again.

6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would explain that this is why they would not be receiving a punishment, and are simply being required to chose a new name. I would also mention that it is stated in the rules.

7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
I would speak to the doctor and inquire about why he is running around with a firearm larger than a pistol (assuming boarding, if the Sulaco had not been boarded, then a weapon at all). I would also inquire as to why he is not doing his duties as a doctor. If the doctor mentions that he was going to store the weapon, I would just let him know that he could leave it and go back to his duties. Otherwise, I would look at the totality of the circumstances and review his notes. Depending on those things, I would follow the staff policies and handle the issue.

8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.

Medics are meant to stabilize and prevent the immediate death of patients when possible. I would speak to the medic and explain that it is reasonable that no dcotors would be in the FOB, as primarily they are located on the Sulaco (except certain circumstances). Additionally, I would explain that per the rules, medics may not do surgeries. Wounded should be stabilized by medics and then transported to the Sulaco for surgery from a Doctor. I would handle this as a powergaming violation, as a medic does not know how to do surgeries. Obviously, as I've stated in other questions, I would follow the staff policies to resolve the issue.

9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
Obviously, I could conduct a MOTHER scan. However, there are other options. I feel that one of ways to encourage the sides would be either via a High Command fax or a Liaison fax. Either way, I would attend to convince the receiver (either the CO, XO, or Liaison) to deploy back to the Lazarus Research Colony. If I was faxing as High Command, it could be along the lines of the USS Sulaco needing deployment elsewhere, and so the current mission must be finished soon. Obviously, there are a lot of different ways to frame that fax. If I was faxing the Liaison, I could apply pressure to the CL by requesting that he ensure the colony is secured as soon as possible to prevent any further damage to it and to restore control.

10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
This seems fairly cut and dry, as the rules state that if combat logs are generated after round end (besides human vs. alien and human vs. antag) it is an immediate three hour ban. I would follow the staff protocols, however no warning would be issued, I would issue the ban.

11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.

I would treat this as a griefing investigation. Obviously, there are situations where slipping people is acceptable, but this would not be one of them. I would follow the staff protocols to resolve the situation.

12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
This is a clear violation of the escalation of force policies. One cannot simply escalate from a punch to killing. I would speak with both players, follow the staff protocols, and resolve the situation.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

Wasn't aware that I'd have to have my forum name match my ckey for mod apps, so I made a new forum account with the proper name. Thanks!

Almost all your answers you just put "I would follow staff protocols, and resolve the issue". I'd recommend actually putting the type of ban/ note you would put on and what rule they break so the staff who read this KNOW you read the rules and staff protocols. Anyway, that's just my input

Casany is correct here.
If I'm gonna + or - 1 you, I need to see how you plan to properly apply protocols.

Sounds good, I will prepare an extended response to how I would apply protocols in the listed scenarios and post it when I'm done.

Thanks!
