Sybil - Moderator Application

Post by Sybil » 10 Nov 2016, 15:22

Byond ID: Sybil

Colonial Marines Character: Sybil Briner

Age: 24

Gender: Female

Timezone: EST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? Ten to twenty plus.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? Yes, on a few other SS13 servers including the 40k server and Dwarfstation.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? I don't believe so.

What other servers do you play on? Mostly /vg/station

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? /vg/, I don't play anywhere else really.

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? I don't believe so.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)? No.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? I'm familiar enough that I can teach myself anything I don't know.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.

1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
Message the player to ask why, check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way.

2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
Repair the breach and repressurize the area.

3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
Deny the request, reprimand the commander for cowardice in a roleplay Command message.

4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
Message the marine to ask why, check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way. Issue a warning to the researcher as well, if he did not have a good reason to hand them out.

5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
Warn him to stop. If he does not, ban him from OOC and Ahelps, and append a note.

6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
Message him to ask if he has a desired name that will fit the rules.

6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Ignorance is no excuse to not follow the rules. Apologize but be firm on a name change.

7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
Message the player to remind him of his duties and job-specific rules and restrictions. Check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way.

8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way.

9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
Send a roleplay Command message about a reactor leak requiring the evacuation of the Sulaco for thirty minutes to avoid crew death.

10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
Check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way.

11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Message the player to ask why, check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way.

12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Explain the rules about escalation. Check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
I love the server and would love to be a part of the team that helps keep it running smoothly.

I can always appreciate a player applying to staff, and we wouldn't ever hold this against you in a future application, but we don't really know who you are. You could be a great person and a potentially great staff member, but we don't roll the dice with people we don't really know anything about.

Additionally, a lot of your answers are exceptionally generic, which is what I assume you were going for. Those repetitive "Check his notes for previous incidents, if found ban him. If not, issue a warning. Append notes about it either way." answers are not /wrong/ per-say, but they don't give us insight into your mentality and your intentions as a staff member. Should you ever resubmit an application, perhaps try and be more specific to the situations at hand, providing more detail about what the ban length would be like, what you would message them saying, etc.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

Just to say i haven't really seen your character on, but i won't hold that against yah, but your answers are quite lacking.

1) this really depends on the situation, so for example if he shoots into other players and mass griefs you sleep him and question him, but if he shoots a wall without hitting anybody you would probably ask him why.

2)alright that would be a good answer, but you might want to find out who did it and if they keep doing it.

3)yep this is good.

4)ehh, this seems alright, but its kinda run of the mill really.

5)yep this is good.

6)also add a note, fur future staff in case they don't change it.

6a)this is good.

7)Jban if you have found out the suspect has done it multiple times, other than that it's a decent answer.

8) same with the last one if they break job-specific rules job ban them.

9) don't do the same one every time, but that would be a valid one-time thing, except maybe not ALL personnel.

10)with this, I would give the guy a straight up 3-hour ban. since its EORG, so this answer was kinda off by a long way.

11) this one I have a problem with because most of the time you would watch and laugh, if the guy keeps doing it in the RO line or during actual combat, that would be appropriate to give a warning/note, but you definitely wouldn't give someone a ban for that.

12)this one is fine too.

Overall I think this is an alright app, but it's quite formulaic, check notes, ban if he has, warning if you don't, so I'm going to be neutral for now.

I will also go with a neutral. Disregarding the fact you are new and just going with the application itself, well, like Biolock and Jay have said, it feels very repetitive and seems to show a lack of thought given to the application itself.

While many of the answers are okay, numbers 10, 11, and 7 I have the biggest problems with. 10 specifically because it is clearly shown in the rules section about what EORG will lead to. 11 just...a very harsh way to go about it. The "copy and paste with generic message" bit has really hurt you on this one because there is more that needs to be done in these situations.

Has stated by Biolock most of these answers are extremely generic and barebones, While your forum account is new if I'm looking at your notes correctly your last note (Positive) was November 2015 and I do believe I've seen you around before.

However your very generic and barebones answers are letting you down, Maybe explain it more on each answer, maybe give us an explaination on your thought process. I also have afew issues with some of your answers, While ok answers some of these are outside of a moderator's powers or just need more work.

Code: Select all

2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
While not 100% wrong you would also be needed to Investigate the cause be it Xeno breaching, Marine breaching, Griefing or Predator bomb (Which wouldn't require you to fix said breach) and deal with it accordingly.

6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
While correct, this is outside the power of a Moderator, That would require access to Variable editing. You instead ask them to change it next round or if possible ask an admin to change the name for you. You would also need to make sure they aren't a repeat offender and add notes.

9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
This is outside the ability of a Moderator, While it would "possibly" force a marine assault, it would also be classed as an event.

10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
No matter the issue this is counted as EoRG which is automatic 3-hour ban.
Currently I'm going to go a Neutral for the moment, Maybe once the answers improve and We've seen you around abit more, my opinion may change.

So, I read over this app a few times while I was at work and have noticed a couple things. Bio was correct in all but one aspect. Your responses do give us some insight into you as a staff member. You're very by-the-books, very quick, very efficient. This is both good and bad. This is good because it means you're gonna get things done and you're gonna try and get things done correctly every single time. There is a downside to this though. I tried the whole quick and efficient thing, and I can tell you from experience it doesn't work the majority of the time. It comes off as extremely cold and calloused and rubs the players wrong. Therefore, we do need some personality in your answers, a little bit of pizazz to say.

So far I'm neutral on this app. Here's what I'd like to see: I'd like you to comment your investigative process for each question that requires investigating. Show a little character. Otherwise, I'll be watching you IC for the next few days and see if I change my opinion.

As my esteemed colleague slc97 says, the answers aren't wrong but mods are more than just reading the rulebook and applying punishments.

Mods are the most visible face of the server, and they are in the best position to have the players have a great time.

Especially with players, sometimes a soft touch works better, but a bit of a personal touch always does.
