Kavrick - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Kavrick
Colonial Marines Character: Alexander "Owl" Bravard
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Timezone: GMT
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? somewhere around 42
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? I'm currently a mentor on this server, have been for two months now
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? No
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? I used to play on paradise but CM is currently the only server i play on
Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made: http://cm-ss13.com/viewtopic.p ... =moderator
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for? Banned for 24 hours on Paradise
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Yes, i currently use it as mentor
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.
1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
Check the players notes for previous behavior, question the player on their reasons/motivation, question witnesses if necessary. Depending on the results of investigation, either issue a warning and a note, or an escalating ban. Aheal if anyone was killed from the grief.
2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
Check for the reason for the breach, if it was not done by a player (Dropship crashing or otherwise) leave it be, if a player has caused this, question the player and check his notes, if he has done this frequently, give him a note and escalating ban, if not, a warning and a note. If the breach was done by a player, seal the breach.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
Let a mentor know, or message the player and ask him if he needs help.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
Warn the player about being disrespectful to staff, and mute his ahelp capabilities if he continues to harass staff. If it's an issue that needs an admin+, i'd ask if any are online or notify members in the slack that we need an admin+
5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
It doesn't matter if they have gotten away with the name for any amount of time, ask him to change his name the next round, if has been asked to change his name several times in the past issue the appropriate escalating ban, let the player know that they can appeal their name on the forums.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
This is a mp issue and should be dealt with IC, but if the player is repeatedly doing this to avoid his job and fight aliens, this can go against the rules and should be notified, especially if they're leaving the ship to fight aliens planetside, if he has a history of avoiding his job to fight aliens, issue a job ban.
7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Let the player know that doing surgery as a medic is power gaming and is not allowed, if he continues or has a history of this, issue a job ban and appropriate escalating ban.
8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
Currently, i dont think moderators have the means to use either the announcements or any sort of ERT, as far as i know, this should be left to admins, if the round is continuing to stagnate, ask if an admin or admin+ on the slack can come on.
9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
Firing at antags at the end of round is neither against EORG or any other rules.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
This kind of problem is the duty of MP's, unless the player has an extreme history of trying to start fights or cause problems at round start, in which then i would let the player know that excessive problem causing can come under rule 1, ask him why he is doing such and ask him to stop, personally i've never seen someone get banned for excessive petty issues, so i admit that i'm not 100% on how to handle this problem if handling it is even necessary.
11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Warn the player that killing someone over a punch is improper escalation, i'd then ask the killed marine their side of the story in case there was more to it, if the player has an excessive history of killing other marines over small or non issues, issue an escalating ban, if this is his first instance of such behavior, leave him a note and warn him not to do it again.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
Check staffwho to see if any Admin+'s are on, if not, notify the slack that we need a Admin+ on.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
This is completely contextual, if the player is doing it as an obvious, non malicious joke, it's fine, if the player is targeting another player with meta knowledge about them or carries it on to LOOC or OOC, ask the player why they are doing it and warn them to keep it to a minimum, although the majority of times people are excessively racist IC, they normally end up in trouble with other players because of it, but OC racism is another issue.
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Aheal those who have been killed, leave a note and ban on the player and let other staff know that he might be a multikeyer or some sort of ban evader.
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
Ask them why they did it, if they intentionally wanted to die, i'd check their notes and either issue a escalating ban if they have a history of such behavior, or talk to them and give them a note, i'd imagine that this kinda behavior is by salty marines that die to aliens and do this in order to take some sort of revenge, i'd explain to the player that this is a selfish way to play and that it's not acceptable.
16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
Depends on the amount that it's being done, in very small amounts there's nothing immediately wrong with this, but if the player is causing problems with xeno co operation from flooding the chat and distracting people, i'd ask him to tone it down, if they continue this or have an extensive history of being disruptive in xeno chat, i'd issue a job ban for xeno.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
As the hivemind is a direct translation to english, this isn't against the rules.
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
Let the player know that the marines do not know of the existence of aliens before seeing them planetside and that it is meta knowledge, if the player has an extensive history of using meta knowlege especially as command, give them a job ban.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
Ask both players what happened, if proper escalation was followed then it's completely valid, if the player just suddenly took out their gun and shot the other player, or any other lines of suddenly just killing them, warn them that it's not an excuse for killing another player, check the notes and see if he has a habit of killing other marines for little reason, and issue an escalating ban if this is true, otherwise, issue the standard warning and note.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
Let the staff know in either PM's or modchat, if the mod has left or gone afk after giving the wrong information, i would make the correction. Of course i would need to double check with other staff and the rules to make sure I'm not the one that has it incorrect.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I would approach them on it, ask them why they are doing it or if they have permission, i'd make sure to take screenshots as proof and let higher up staff know.
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
Depends on the context or amount, in end of round chat banter is more than common and completely fine, if the player is approaching me in person and using LOOC knowing that i'm staff, i'd approach him on it and warn him not to do it, and if he is using ahelp to insult and/or harass staff, i would disable his ahelp capabilities and give him a note.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
Firstly i would like to reinforce that i'm completely aware and support that thorough investigation is incredibly important before issuing any sort of punishment, as giving incorrect bans or warnings gives a bad impression of staff, and correctly issuing punishment is extremely important.
Other than that I honestly didn't want to make a application with the current flood of other applications, i was going to wait but was told that i should make it so they could all be done at once.
I'm also extremely receptive to criticism, i'm eager to improve what i know and become a better staff member in general, even as a mentor.

Only thing I have to say is remember to tell the medic to close up the surgery before handing the patient off to medical/an unfortunate life of sadness. It's easy to see Kavrick knows what he's doing here and I trust further reviews will support this belief, +1 (unless spoony somehow uncovers your the leader of a greytide revolution or some shit).

Re: Kavrick - Moderator Application
Ok lets give this a look:
However a little disclosure on this. I've been in contact with the applicant and I've talked to them over some general things about moderation, I haven't given them any direct answers but I did steered them in the way, that I deemed is correct (which could be wrong). This also is a thing that doesn't only apply to staff members, if anyone has a mod app or wants to make one, I'll gladly talk to you about it. Can't do this, so sorry
- For question 6, with recent rule changes this would be more of an IC issue. If its an issue you can ask an admin plus to make an announcement or toss the MPs a bone (somehow, make it a logically way).
- For question 7, what is to be done with the patient?
- For question 10, like the honestly on this one
- For question 11, what is to be done with the dead player? Also I would suggest checking the logs if you aren't too busy since both sides of the story are probably going to be colored towards a favorable outcome from themselves.
- For question 14, what would you give him as a ban time for such a case, assuming this is the first time?
- For question 15, if there is some prior history with such a thing, a xeno job ban might be a tad more appropriate however the rest of the answer is fine.
- For question 16, make sure to note it also I would say give them multiple chances for mild breaks like these before issuing a job ban.
- For question 17, minor point we do like to encourage speaks like this but you are correct on this.
- For question 18, how would you define the term extensive? What would be the month range and how loosely would other notes affect this?
- For question 20, how would you make this correction?
- For question 21, if they are approaching you with LOOC, I personally would say just let it go unless they are constantly harassing you but if that is the case, I would suggest having another staff member looking it over instead of yourself since dealing with cases around yourself really isn't kosher.

That was from his last application for mod.Going neutral for now. Don't get me wrong I don't dislike the application or Kavrick them-self but I feel like I would like to see more time from them as a mentor since they've only been a mentor since March 31st which is still not too long ago.
I will say thought if and when he gets more time under his belt I would in the future +1 this.

11: Depends on the outcome, if the marine killed the guy for no proper reason, i'd imagine it'd be fair to aheal the guy who died because of it
14: First bans are normally round bans, so 3 hours.
16: I agree, that's why i said extensive history, as it's a rather trivial thing but also shouldn't be encouraged.
17: Agreed, although it is difficult to enforce rp.
18: i would say if he had done it 2-3 times in the same month, as for other notes, i'd say powergaming notes would also be related, as it's forgoing rp for advantage.
20: for the correction, i'd even let the staff member know in PM's if they were online, or i would message the player they were messaging.
21: Of course, as honestly it only matters if they're doing it maliciously. And i understand that you're not supposed to have anything to do with cases that have you involved.

Re: Kavrick - Moderator Application
I'm not a fan of Applications being "guided' or helped with at all by Admins or other staff.
It defeats the purpose of the application. Do we know these are his honest answers, or were they influenced?
I lean-1 partly for that reason, partly for some others.
It's one thing to coach someone, it's another to help them with an application or steer them more towards the correct answers. It makes it impossible for us to properly judge.

Re: Kavrick - Moderator Application
I know what you mean but ive always put things in my own words, the only thing i ever ask for advice on was when i was double checking with people on rules, i dont completely understand what you mean, no one really guided me through this, i asked for some clarification on some rules and that was it.apophis775 wrote:I'm not a fan of Applications being "guided' or helped with at all by Admins or other staff.
Edit: if youre talking about the edit, that was a single question on a rule that changed recently, i didnt change anything else

Re: Kavrick - Moderator Application
I've been hanging out with Kavrick the past week or two on his Discord. His attitude is patient and mature(mostly). In my opinion, he's got what it takes to be a Moderator. +1
