Anoonki - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Anoonki
Colonial Marines Character: Valerie Greene (Multiple others, but this' probably the one I play the most regularly.)
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Timezone: UTC 0600
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?: Would probably fluctuate, anywhere from 10 to 40 hours a week, depending on real life factors.
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?: No real experience.
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? I did not, as I've only been playing SS13 since late 2016. and only regularly playing CM since early 2017.
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Oracle, Lebensraum, FTL13
Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?: Paradise, Self antagging(Appealed successfully within a week or so.)
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? I am not, but I imagine I could learn it's use quickly.
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.
1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I'd look into the scenario, and try to get some context for it. If the player's attempted to roleplay, or had a grievance leading to the shooting, I'd talk to them about Escalation, roleplay, and griefing. As well as add a note.
If the player's just wordlessly started shooting people, and is unresponsive, negatively responsive, or just comes off as a griefer, I'd give them the note, a 3 hour time out, and direct them to go give the rules a read.
2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
I'd investigate to find out the circumstances of the breach, and of course rectify the breach itself. If it were griefing, and would significantly impact the round, I'd look into the option of adminhealing players(Only in the scenario it would be considerably round-ruining, though. Because it's not like adminhealing a few grief victims would negatively impact anyone's round, save for the griefer.) And I'd investigate the responsible party, and in the event it's grief, punish them accordingly.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I'd direct a Mentor to help the player, in the event none are present, I'd personally PM the player and try to give them a hand, as well as directing them to the quickstart guide.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I would of course make a personal note of their behaviour, and then see if I can get an Admin+ member of staff to come speak with them, of course warning them of the player's rude, disrespectful demeanor.
5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I'd inform them that it doesn't effect that their name still isn't acceptable, and that they will of course still have to change their name. With that in mind, I'd ask them if they have a name they'd like me to change theirs to in the meantime, and inform them they'd have to change the character's name in character setup before joining their next round. As well of course, as adding the associated note.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
IC issue, though I'd check to see whether the player was new or not, in the case they are new, I'd look into directing a mentor to talk to them, to ensure they know just what they're doing.
7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB
I'd tell him that it's of little consequence that there's no doctor, and that he must stop the surgery, though I would allow him to cauterize the guy. Additionally, I'd check to see if he has related powergaming notes, and add another.
8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I'd look at the scenario at hand, if the xenos are capable of advancing (not a bunch of young t1s and such, if they can fight effectively) I'd subtlemessage the queen something regarding personally hearing the voice of the queen mother, and direct them to attack. If the xenos are not capable of effectively attacking, but the marines are, I'd give the acting commander an ICly themed subtlemessage about their leadership instincts telling them to attack, as if the enemy's not advancing, they must be weak.
9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I'd inform them that EORG only applies to actual griefing, or general team damage/attack logs, and that as they are an enemy of the marine, it's not EORG, as they are not on the same team.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I'd check their notes for associated LRP behavior, assuming they don't have a history of being LRP at round start, I'd leave the MPs to it.
11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I'd talk to him regarding escalation procedure, and that firearms should generally be the absolute last resort. As for actual punishment, I'd add a note, and contextually give them a 3 hour griefing timeout, based on their note history and or their behaviour during the PM exchange.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I'd attempt to get in touch with an Admin+ member of staff using either Discord or Slack.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
I'd inform them that IC racism is allowed and that none of it is directed at the player OOCly. Though I would take a moment to look at the offending comment.
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I'd check their notes, and apply one. As well as giving them a weeklong ban and file for a more permanent punishment on the forums.
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
Context matters a lot, and that's the first thing I'd look into (Player notes, possibly logs for when they bursted and where, such things.) and assuming the player was actually safely in xeno territory, and ran in to intentionally suicide a larva, I'd apply a note, and potentially a jobban (Assuming they have prior history of being a problem.)
16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I'd check the player for LRP notes, and then talk to them about it, and inform them that such behavior isn't acceptable, and that this is an MRP server. And of course apply a note for reeing in hivemind.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I'd tell the player that the xeno communication's the english translation of what they're saying, and that the player can use generally whatever describing words they want for humans, though themed "Metal bird", "Tallhosts", and such things are encouraged.
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I'd of course tell the player that they do NOT ICly know about the aliens on the planet, apply a metagaming note if appropriate under the circumstances, and look into ICly letting the marines know that there's no reason to believe the presence of aliens on the planet.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
I'd look at the context(PM both players, of course ghost over and see that the dropship was full, and ask any available witnesses.) and assuming it was in fact necessary for the player's escape and survival, and was acceptably roleplayed, deem it an IC issue. If not, a note and potential 3 hour grief ban depending on the behaviour of the player should do.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I'd inform them over Msay that the information they've given, or the enforcement they've handed down, is not correct and let them know what I personally believe the correct course of action is.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I'd of course look into the circumstances, and if it's something minor, I'd remind the staff member that what they're doing violates the code of conduct, if they rectify their behavior, I'd leave it at that. If they react negatively, or generally continue, I'd look into taking it up with somebody with the authority to handle such a matter.
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
Ignore it, it's just a salty boy, someone trying to get a rise out of me, or banter.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
A few things, actually. Firstly I made this application in Notepad (Just because it's a little easier), so if there's any formatting errors, as there were a few issues, please try to excuse them.
Second, while I may have been a little vocal about my criticisms of the CM staff team in the past, I do understand a little better why these things happen, and have mellowed out a little.
Additionally of course, I know that as a member of staff, I do represent a unified staff team.
Also, while my forum activity isn't unbelievable, that's mostly because I feel like I'm aimlessly butting into a lot of things, and likely wouldn't be a problem as a member of staff(I do read the forums a lot, I just don't post much at the moment.)
And while my forum name doesn't match my Ckey, it's just my Ckey shortened. I can't actually change my Forum Username in my Account Settings (I tried, I don't get the option), but I would be open to having it changed to Anoonki by forum administration.
Lastly, a LOT of the above scenarios are very context dependant, if there's any questions or clarifications anyone'd like regarding my answers, just ask.

Re: Anoonki - Moderator Application
All you answers are pretty sound, and it's not bad to be critical of staff at times, they're not infallible after all, but it's nice to have a limit.
And maybe if you make it onto the staff team you'll understand their side of it and it might shed some light.
I do like your answers quite abit though and you go into pretty good detail. It's in my opinion that 20a The staff team needs to know about actual abuse of power 'ahealing themselves, aghosting for things ect...' If you catch it it needs to be addressed, but that's my only qualm, and I can't really fault you as my answer to that question leave some to be desired as well.
That said I would recommend boosting your forum presence some while you wait for this to be approved, posing opinions here and there goes a long way into players knowing who you are, and ontop of that it give people an insight to who you are on some level or another.
Overall though I want to give a +1 if you can pick up some forum activity, but the name Anooki seems familiar to me on some level already, it might not be to others.

Re: Anoonki - Moderator Application
Hello Anoonki,
A very nice looking application. A few comments:
2. There's at least one legit type of breach.
4. What kind of issue could the player have that requires him to speak to an admin+?
10. How would anyone have a history of roundstart LRP if whenever they roundstart LRP we do nothing and let the MPs handle it?
18. Just a note?
20a. You'll want to just gather evidence and hand it over to the "somebody with the authority to handle such a matter", it's just better for a number of reasons.
Basing myself solely on this application, it looks like you'll do fine as moderator.

Re: Anoonki - Moderator Application
Regarding 18, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, it could just be somebody being a little new, and making an honest mistake. If they react negatively or in a generally hostile fashion, I might look into something a little bit more direct, but if they acknowledge their mistake and own up to it, a simple not should do, and if the behavior repeats itself, a jobban or something to that effect could occur in the future.Tharinoma wrote: ↑06 Feb 2018, 17:21Hello Anoonki,

Regarding 2, when you say that, should I /not/ seal a legit breach? Because if that's the case, my mistake. The second half regarding grief is just that, if someone manages to breach via grief, I'd handle it like that, otherwise if it's legit I'd just fix it, and let people in the round work it out.
Regarding 4, I'm not really sure, I see it as the "I want to speak to your manager!" situation, I'd let them speak to "my manager", as I'm not sure it could necessarily cause any harm. If an Admin+ is unavailable, I'd simply inform them of that, and continue.
Regarding 10, you're right that's my mistake. Of course in practice, I'd apply a note as well. I suppose adding it to the application just slipped my mind.
And lastly regarding 20a, you're absolutely right yet again, I have the program sharex to capture logs, and in the scenario that someone were misusing their powers in such a way, I'd gather evidence and take it up the chain. though I hope it's never something I'd have to do. Specifying this was just something else that I suppose I forgot to do, as I felt I was getting a little bit too in-depth by that point in the application, and left that out for brevity.
I appreciate the confidence, Tharinoma.

Re: Anoonki - Moderator Application
I find that the answers are good enough for a mod. Tharinoma already covered most of the issues with them. I like your character and I have seen you around for a long time, so I'd assume you have a good grasp of the rules and would be a pretty decent moderator. The forum thing is something that could easily be fixed with time and dedication.
Good luck. +1

Re: Anoonki - Moderator Application
Tharinoma has already said most of the minor issues in your answers and therefore, I believe a full review of your application from me need not occur. As in most applications, you could have applied more detail in your resolutions, and you also appear to be briefly lenient, which is not a bad thing. However, definitely, your answers even missing some details are appropriate.
The only compromising problem would be what is in your answer to the 20ath question, but I believe that you would already be able to respond adequately to it after the reviews of other staff members regarding your application.
The small issues in your app can easily be fixed during a trial period. Overall, I believe you will be a satisfactory, competent moderator.

Sorry about the lack of response or any of that in the last couple days, I had a bunch of appointments and such, and this slipped my mind.
I appreciate the support, folks, and I'm doin' my best to work on that forum activity issue in the meantime, getting used to using it more, instead of just reading it.

Do you remember our home and mother?

Re: Anoonki - Moderator Application
Not to sound impatient, but I feel like I've gotta ask at this point.
Is there something that I've failed to address thus far? Or is it just time to build up a bit of activity?
Excuse the doubleposting, of course, but I'd really like to know if anything I've provided on this application is less than acceptable.

Nah, you're fine. In fact, I'll +1 this. Some apps just take time, some even up to 2 weeks to process. Patience is a virtue. Plus, sometimes we like to batch acceptance of apps so that the trials are trials at the same time.
