Colonial Marines Character: William Joyce, William Frost
Age: 19

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
8 hours
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I have also been an Server Manager of a Garry's Mod Server (RP), I was working with the FTP and MYSQL server and was mostly working as the Technician for server and the forum that I have managed too, I have helped out the Administrators on the server when I had time.
I've also been a Supporter on a German GTA:SA Server (RealLife RP), that means I didn't have full administration rights but I was here to fullfill the help requests sent by users and help them in general.
I've also messed around on local servers with admin commands and all that, I'm familiar with them.
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
I played a bit on New Eden Station and also on the Nostromo Server.
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Paradise and FTL Station.
Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Command ban, appealead at: viewtopic.php?f=87&t=11309&p=120167#p120167
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
I've been banned from Paradise for improper escalation for 2 weeks 1 and half years ago.
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Not familiar, but willing to learn for sure.
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.
1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I let the MPs continue to do their job and detain him, then I'd PM the person asking why they shot someone at round-start.
If they claim an accident I'd check the logs, generally looking for a single burst or shot and then a apologetic or surprised response to it from the player. In that case I PM the player to be more careful in the future and add a note onto him and adminheal the victim.
Should it not be an accident I would check their notes to look for any history, should it be that it was his first offense I'd give him a stern warning to not repeat such in the future and follow proper escalation and add a note onto him and then adminheal the victim.
2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
Unless there's a MT running towards or already fixing it I would fix the breach myself and then fix the air in the corresponding room.
After that I'd investigate the cause whether it was the dropship/predator/marine. Dropship and predator is fine and I'll just fix the breach.
Should a Marine deliberately have caused the breach then I'd PM him asking for his reasoning. I'd check his notes and upon first incident add a week-ban and repeated incident request a perma request as hull breaching and atmos fuckery seems to be heavily scrutinized.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I'd PM him asking if he needs any help, in any case I would link him the quickstart guide on our wiki to help him out and also remind him of the adminhelp function where he can ask any question he would have to be answered by the mentors or staff.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
Remind him over PMs that the staff here are working voluntarily and he has no right to disrespect them. I'd ensure him that the staff, whoever it may be, mod or admin is working on it and if required will be handed over to an Admin +, then tell him we will be responding when the issue is solved. Should he have any issues with the way his issue is being handled, refer him to the staff complaint section on the forums and add a note onto him about disrespect.
Should he continue to excessively swear and insult I'd PM him that I will put a 3-hour ban on him for him to cool down a bit.
In case of a disrespectul history in his notes I'd ban him for 24 hours and up depending on the length of his notes.
5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I'd PM him refer him to our naming rules and ask of him to think of a better fitting name, I would assure him that he won't be punished as long as he changes the name to a more fitting one next round and then add a note onto him.
Should he have previous warnings about his name I would point that out and tell him that he will be banned for 24 hours to think of a better name and that he's welcomed back should he have done so.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
There seems to be no intervention required from my side. Have the crew handle it.
7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I expect the new skill system to prevent that.
Although should that not be the case I would PM him to quickly seal up the marine with the cautery no matter at which step he is.
I'd ask him if he is aware that squad medics are not allowed to perform surgery and refer him to marine rule 5. I'll ask him if he could be so nice to instead bring the marine to the dropship to medevac him.
I'll tell him to read the guidelines on what roles can know what and warn him only to perform surgery as doctor or researcher and then add a note onto him.
On repeated incident I'd issue a job ban for Field Medic and tell him to apply the ban in a few weeks once he understands which roles can know what.
8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I'd use SM to try to convince the acting Commander to push the aliens with something the lines of "I feel like this mission is about to end, I just need to order the marines to finish the job."
If nothing happens I'd ask for an Admin+ over msay or Slack to use whatever neccessary to make them push.
9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I'd PM the IRON BEAR and remind them that engaging hostile forces is allowed even during the end of the round.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I'd let it slide and have the MPs deal with it untill it turns into straight out antagonistic behavior to fuck with other people.
Although if it's a Squad Leader or Specialist I'd tell them to behave more professionaly for their role and tone it down in the future and add a note about fucking around during prep time.
11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I'd check if there was any proper escalation via logs, but I assume not so I would ask the person if they know about the proper way to escalate fights and tell him that his way of escalatin is wrong and give him an example of a proper escalation (verbal fight to fist fight to knife fight to small arms to murder). I'd give him a warning that he should follow proper escalation and that further incidents may lead to a ban, then add a note on him about improper escalation.
On repeated offense I would apply a 24 hour ban and inform them of it, pointing out that there needs to be correct escalation between a punch and a murder.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I'd ask in msay for an Admin+ to take over if he could.
If there's nobody available, request someone from Slack and give him a short summary.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
Explain to him that minor racism is allowed IC as long as it isn't excessive. I'd also tell him that he shouldn't take things being said ICly seriously as it's mostly just banter and people not looking to offend others (hopefully).
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Use OOC to announce that the issue is being handled then go on to sleep the marine just in case and go on to adminheal all the victims.
I'd go on to check the notes and depending on the length of his notes either go for a 3-day ban on his first offense or a 7-day ban with perma request on repeated offenses.
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I'd go on and PM the larva player asking him for his reason to charge the marines in suicide. If he wanted to leave or not play tell him that he could have just ghosted in the nest to free up a slot.
I'll give him a stern warning to not do it again in the future and remind him that he could be banned the next incident and add a note about it.
On repeat offense add a Xeno jobban and tell him to apply it once he understands how to properly play a Xeno.
16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I'd go and PM the player to caese memeing in the hivemind chat and to behave like a Xeno would and then add a note about it onto him.
On repeat offense I would tell him to reconsider the style in which he RPs and then add a 3-hour ban.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
PM the different xeno player that it's completely fine to call the dropship a dropship in the hivemind chat as it's a direct translation of english.
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
Use OOC to have the marines not act on the player mentioning the xenos, reminding that marines themselves don't know what's going on on a colony.
Then I'd PM the player asking him why his character would know about xenos, pointing out that he can't and refering him to the metagame rules.
On first offense it would simply be a reminder not to repeat it in the future and a note about it.
On repeated offense I'd apply a command job ban.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
At first this seems fine to me, as self-preservation is a pretty valid RP point.
In this case I can't blame the person killing him though as EVAC itself is very chaotic to the point you can not think rationally before your character dies.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I'd talk to him over the msay and politely point out the mistakes, giving him my own suggestion in hope of him correcting it.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I'd rather as much evidence as I can via screenshots and logs and then PM them to Senior Staff or Feweh over Slack.
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I'd take it light-hearted as long as it's just harmless banter because I don't mind it. I'd tell them to cool down should it get too excessive though.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
I had a period of time where I had a stupid phase where I was salty a lot and got a bunch of stupid notes, but I've been trying to improve myself from then on and haven't had a single note in the last 8 months.

You have a bad EoF habit and you finally got a 24h band for it in the last six months, I'm not sure how I feel about someone with such a note history becoming a mod, even more so with EoF given you could fly off the handle at someone.
Your answers are pretty good and I cannot see an inherent flaw in them off the top of my head.
That said your note history has my leaning to -1 for now.

The answers are good. I don't like the note history, but I've spoken to the player and they do seem to be regretful and have learned from that period of time. The player needs to clarify how regularly he's been playing since that last note about 7 months ago. Until then, I'm gonna remain neutral, but I'm leaning towards +1.
Edit: Aight, yeah, +1

Yes, I did definitely regret that time, as I've said, it was a stupid phase where I took the rules lightly.slc97 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2018, 14:37The answers are good. I've been gone on a 1-2 months hiatus due of school after the 24 hour ban, which was actually 7 months ago now that I remember, yeah.
Since then I have been picking up CM back again popping in once or twice a week and beginning to play much more actively since New Year's.

Your answers are fine. Most of the notes seem to be confined to a 2 month period last year. No notes since then looks good. Our timezones dont quite match up but I have seen you once or twice online. Should you be accepted your actions during the trial period should clear up any misgivings about your notes. +1 from me.

Re: ExGame - Moderator Application
I haven't met a lot of situations where there haven't been any MPs on board yet, but in the ones that happened to exist it was usually the XO/CO that apprehended the suspects.
I'd probably let either of them handle it, as long as the MT is not hindering the round from continuing as normal, otherwise I would give him a heads up.
Although I do appreciate the confidence you and others have in me!

Re: ExGame - Moderator Application
I have seen you doing questionable stuff while I was a CO.
First, I saw you shotting a perma brigged prisoner (while you were a CMP) with a Tactical Shotgun just because he was disarming you instead of choosing a non-lethal option. IIRC, this is a straight rule-break and should be punished heavily. Even worst where the MPs that refused to brig you for neither Murder or Manslaughter.
Second, not sure if it was you, but I think you declared civvies to be Killed on Sight (as a XO) when they arrived via the Normandy during the peaceful colony event. I was certainly going to blow your brains off but the server ended up crashing.

Re: ExGame - Moderator Application
For the first part, it was a CLF prisoner that has escaped, and the fact that I shot him was literally panic-clicking from reallife side while I had the shotgun in my hands, I wasn't actually PM'd about it. I can't do anything for the fact that the MPs trusted me more than you during that round. And the fact that I wasn't brigged is untrue, since I was indeed brigged for manslaughter and released seconds before the round ended.DriedMilk wrote: ↑23 Feb 2018, 19:13I have seen you doing questionable stuff while I was a CO.

For the second part, that's not true at all, because that wasn't me.
EDIT: I was one of the peaceful colonists.

Your answers are mostly fine, your note history is another issue but you've seem to have improved in that regard. I'll just mention we have a progression of 3 hours, to a day, to 3 days, to a week. I'll give it my +1 to a trial period as you seem to understand the rules and seem like you can handle what you'll need to do as a mod.

+1. I've seen you on quite a lot since this app went up and you seem to have shaped up and are calling out server violations instead of making them. While of course I am not a fan of your note history, You haven't gotten a single note in the last 8 months or so which shows me you decided to improve and be a better member of the community. Your answers show you have a good understanding of the rules and procedures. I would not mind giving you a trial.

I remember you- you voted for my CO app before i became a dev.
I think the you gave good answers, and the others seem to like you so ill throw a +1 in. Try not to be too hard on us devs, we spend our lives in cages.

Answers seem pretty alright, nothing that wouldn't work itself out during the trial period.
From personal experience (Back on Para), you seem like you'd make a pretty good mod.

Note history is pretty sub par, BUT you haven't landed yourself in hot water in over 6 months and have been active during that time frame, so I'm not going to hold them against you. Especially as none of your notes were things that would make me think less of your character or disposition.
Application answers have decent answers, and criticisms handled.
I'm willing to give you a go.
Approved for trial, expect a mail soon.
