Pixcellent - Spriter Application
Byond ID: Pixcellent
Age: 21
Gender: Male
How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter): Spriter
If Coder, what languages?
I'm not looking to code, but I do have a highschool+ level education for JAVA, SQL, and web development.
Any previous experience developing with SS13?
I've sprited various odds and ends, usually I just sprite what I want but I also do sprite requests when I get them.
Proof of any previous or current work?
Yes, they'll be at the bottom of the post to keep things clean.
How well do you know Git?
I know how to browse around GitHub and how to download the source. That's about it, I have pushed something before but I can't quite remember how.
Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)
Yes, clear as day.
Anything else you'd like to add?
I've done/do a few little sprites for other servers on occasion. I'm aware that the policy here doesn't allow that, and I'm willing to halt my development work on other servers if I get in.
Also my spriting specialty is clothing/onmob things.

Re: Pixcellent - Spriter Application
Hello, I will give my quick recap this is done per phone apologies about that.
1. If I compare it to the other 2 apps you have examples. That is already a bonus.
2. I cannot check notes right now but I assume those are in order.
3. We are a dev team. How would you visualize your position inside the team? You mention doing mostly request? Does this mean you intent to work mostly on requests?
4. Because the dev team gets a lot of freedom I would like to know is there anything currently that you would want to work on/see changed? (This helps me get into your mindset and it a bit of a freeform question.)

Generally speaking I see myself doing three things typically.
1) Picking up on little spriting things that staff/community want done; things like reasonable requests or little spriting issues on GitLab.
2) Every once in awhile coders will need completely new and significant features sprited (ex. new xeno, new map, etcetera) and I'll try my best to sprite those for them.
3) Working on things that just pop out to me personally, for example I might decide to do work on the armor sprites for Ice one day.
You mention doing mostly request? Does this mean you intent to work mostly on requests?
I don't necessarily intend on requests being the bulk of what I do. That being said I give priority to dev requested sprites because those sprites are more likely to be used for obvious reasons. I'd love to take sprite requests from the community at large as well but only those that I feel might reasonably make it into the game.
Because the dev team gets a lot of freedom I would like to know is there anything currently that you would want to work on/see changed?
Personally I think the addition of a new map would be a great feature and I would happily do sprite work for one. In terms of smaller things that I could do mostly independently, I would like to see more cosmetic options for marines.

Re: Pixcellent - Spriter Application
I think that Pixcellent is a very talented spriter as well as artist who has a good eye for detail and colour that makes their work look interesting and beautiful without being overdone. That being said, the times I have been able to interact with you have always gone swimmingly pleasant, and I think you'd fit in well!
My main curiousity as a mapper gets me straight to one point: Most of the work you presented was more character/item "equipment" based; how would you rate yourself on doing tiling, walls, and other structural things? There's always a high demand for new maps, and there's nothing that makes them stand out more as unique environments than a custom tileset.
Playing off of the aforementioned, do you have any previously done work you'd be willing to share regarding tilesets or other more structural/turf based sprites?
As a spriter, besides simply things you could visualize yourself doing typically by request or demand, could you elaborate more on specific things you as a spriter would want to sprite? You mentioned cosmetics and helping with maps, but I'm curious if you had any ideas in specific you wanted to work towards if you joined the team that you'd be willing to share with us!
You mentioned you'd be more than willing to sprite for new maps, and I'd be super-duper excited to work alongside you. All-in-all, I think you'd make an excellent addition to the developer team, not only due to your clear skill and talent, but also due to you as a person and how you'd synchronize with our team. Will you finally be the one to give us boonie hats?

I play Verena Knox, an extremely unlucky girl, among other characters.

Thank you, you're far too kind to me! I haven't done turfs or structural things besides the kind of stuff I posted. This is mostly because I've never had a request to or anything like that. Despite my lack of prior turf sprites I'm still confident in my ability to make man made turfs and structures seem easy and I think the few sprites I did show demonstrate some skills that would transfer over to them, the only thing that is different is that they're expected to tile in most cases. Organic turfs and structures are definitely gonna be a bit of a learning experience for me but I'm still confident I could knock out some solid grass turfs or something along those lines. Something along the lines of a tree that was greater than 32x32 would be a challenge though, but I'd still love to give it a shot and improve my artistic skills! I hope that helps gives you a better idea of where my skills would be rated in this regard.

Really a map would be what I would wanna work towards most at this point, it just makes sense to me game design wise and it would be a lot of fun to work on a big project plus I'd learn a ton I think. But I do have some vague ideas for other things that I'd like to work on, generally speaking I'd like to see more options for marines in the form of roles, equipment options, and cosmetics. I'd like to see standard PFCs have more options and more to them since so many player play them during a round, in theory it be nice for xenos to get changes like these as well but I don't really have any ideas about how since I personally don't play xeno. Currently I don't have super specific fleshed out ideas, CM is still pretty new to me with lots to learn so I don't dream up new things myself that much yet.
Anyway, hopefully we get the chance to work together in the future! I will absolutely bring boonie hats to this server somehow, the days of oppression are just about done!!

Besides onbody stuff, how easy you can Sprite a weapon/item or vehicle?

Re: Pixcellent - Spriter Application
Items/weapons I could do easily enough. For vehicles something along the lines of a tank would be harder for me mostly because it be a good deal bigger than anything I've ever done before but something along the lines of ATV wouldn't really be a stretch for me.NethIafins wrote: ↑27 Oct 2018, 17:19Besides onbody stuff, how easy you can Sprite a weapon/item or vehicle?

Re: Pixcellent - Spriter Application
Hey Pixcellent,
We did not forget about the app. (We just lost our head dev.)
I am going to try and get all apps discussed at the dev meeting.
But I also value Joshuu his input.
Expect to hear from us about what the plan will be.

Re: Pixcellent - Spriter Application
Hello,
Right now we are going thru a transitional period and we really need people that can help us move from copyright protected images to something unique that we all can call ours.
Can you help us with this? Can you create a reskin of a drone that will be distant from the Xenomorph but function of the Drone is visible and understandable.
We don't care about how this creature will look (YET) as long as it is easy to understand and has style that can be transferred to other castes.
Go wild.

Re: Pixcellent - Spriter Application
After discussion at the dev meeting, we have decided to accept this application for the role of Spriter. It is not necessary to complete the test described by Neth in the above post; discussion has determined it to be unnecessary (though appreciated).
I will contact you privately in the next couple of days with all of the details.
