Jackserious - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Jackserious
Colonial Marines Character: Jennifer 'Nun' Rowley, Jan Kozak
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Timezone: CET
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 30-40
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? ~1.5 years as an admin on the now-defunct AD13, SS13.
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? No.
Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? Only a Yautja whitelist app.
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.
1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
Are they firing at fellow marines? If so, put that particular player to sleep. Ask them, and any witnesses, to elaborate on what happened. In the time it takes them to answer, check logs & vars. If the situation wasn't justified with PROPER RP, issue a ban for griefing. Check for nearby wounded/dead; if they were just shot at for no reason and didn't react, a rejuv is in order. If they did fire back, however, they forfeited admin assistance.
If the player is simply firing at the walls, stay out of it; that's one for the MPs.
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
Ask, over OOC, who breached. In the meantime, check the logs and the variables of nearby objects. Should the breacher step forward, ask them the reason for breaching. If the breach was accidental or otherwise non-malicious, sternly remind them that breaching is disallowed and let them go with a note. Should they step forward and admit to not having read the rules, or otherwise have done it on purpose, issue a 12-hour ban. Should the breacher NOT step forward but later be found, they would get a 24 hour ban, regardless of intent. Add a note in either case.
Direct an engineer or an appropriate xenomorph to the breach and ask them to plug it.
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
As per protocol, I am not allowed to give out the nuke codes. Regardless, the numbers aren't nearly severe enough to warrant that kind of response. Tell the marines, using the M.O.T.H.E.R. verb, that there are only 4 unidentified lifeforms in the AO, and to carry on with their operation as normal.
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
At minimum, a jobban plus note for the researcher - either they didn't read the rules, or they knowingly manufactured Napalm, despite it being prohibited. Neither is acceptable. If the marine maliciously threw the grenade at their fellow marines, knowing what it was, investigate the situation and most likely ban them for griefing. If the marine had no way to know what was in the grenade, and the situation was somehow acceptable - perhaps roleplayed to the nth degree, warn the player to investigate the content of their custom grenades before using them, and remind them that Napalm is banned. Add a note to said player in every case.
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
Hell will freeze over before something like that gets a reaction out of me. On the other hand, clogging Ahelp with shit like that is a no-no. Warn them to stop exactly twice. Should they continue, apply a mute from Ahelp. In either case, add a note to the player.
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
Direct the marine to the rules, specifically quoting, "Your character must have a normal first and last name. One-word nicknames are allowed inside the name (e.g. Derek 'Double-D' Donahue, Jane 'Crusher' Sanchez) . Ranks, titles, honorifics, offensive, famous and/or pop-culture names are not allowed (e.g. Dr John Smith, Barack Obama, Lt John Doe, Adolf Hitler). Also, avoid lore-based names like Weyland, Yutani, Bishop, Ripley, etc - these are restricted to admin characters for RP only." Tell them to either wait until the end of the round and change it, or attempt to seize someone with appropriate permissions to change it in loco. Add a note to the player.
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Clearly they're an old timer. Regardless, veterancy is no excuse. If they wish, go as far as directing them to the specific forum post that expands upon this change (Naming rules are becoming more RP-centric). Since they didn't "know" it was a rule, they also clearly need to brush up on them; tell the player to do so immediately, as ignorance is no excuse. Add a note to the player for arguing and possibly not reading the rules.
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
A Doctor is only allowed a single M4A3 Pistol with 2 magazines ONLY after the sulaco has been boarded. Check their notes. Do they have previous offenses of the same kind? If no, PM the player and tell them to either drop the weapon immediately and tend to the wounded, or face a jobban. Otherwise, apply a 12-hour ban AND a jobban for continued disobeying. Add a note to their account in either case.
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Squad Medics aren't allowed surgery in ANY circumstance. PM the player, telling them to stop the surgery immediately. If they refuse, check their notes; do they have a history of disobeying? If yes, a jobban is in order. Otherwise, a stern warning will do. Add a note to their account in either case.
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
Attempt to interfere with the round as little as possible. A simple M.O.T.H.E.R. message stating the current ratio should do it, along with a vaguely veiled threat of disciplinary action. All IC, of course.
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
Apply an immediate 3 hour ban, plus note.
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Honestly, if the first thing a player does after spawning in is going out of their way to bother other people, perhaps they should be somewhere else. REGARDLESS, interfere as little as possible - that's what the MPs are there for. Should the player be particularly insistent in slipping fellow marines to a degree the entire situation escalated OOCly, PM them to stop. Check their notes and, if an extensive history of unacceptable behaviour is found, apply a 12 hour ban. Add a note to their account.
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
If that is true, that wasn't certainly a proper escalation of force. Investigate the situation - logs & variables. If the situation was entirely IC and force was escalated properly, let it slide. If the offender killed the other marine for a simple punch, add a note to their account and, depending on their notes, apply a 24 hour ban. Check if the victim has responded with lethal force. If so, take no further action.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
Nope.

It sounds pretty good. A few of the answers have a bit of things I don't personally like, but it's not your fault that you put down that answer so it's fine. You've got my support.
*Also I recognized you immediately, which is a good sign.

One thing I really liked about this application is the thoroughness that your answer to the last question, question 12, shows really well. Though the question itself just says that "a marine was shot just for punching someone", you include the decision to double-check logs/vars in order to make sure that this was, in fact, the case.

You've answered the questions here clearly and precisely, and the ban times and amount of investigation you would do is good and fair. I think you would make an excellent member to the staff team due to your experience and the effort you would put into it. Also, you're pretty known around here too. +1

Fine as a player, not sure I've seen them on anywhere near the amount of hours they claim they can moderate, though. A little too eager with the notes imo. Feeling neutral.
