Grypho - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Grypho
Colonial Marines Character: Clark Barnes
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Timezone: GMT +2
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 25
Do you have a Skype account (Skype is REQUIRED)? Yes.
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? Yes. I was a moderator most of the time and later on a trial admin on NSS-gamers´ Colonial Marines server hosted by CaptainEnglish in late 2013 and early 2014. I was chosen as head moderator three days before the server was shut-down. About my other than SS13 experience, I was one of the four super admins in a jailbreak community called Chessnut´s Corner, which was hosted in 2013 and 2014. At most we had three 34-slot servers and a staff team of 50 people. I mostly focused on dealing with moderator applications and staff complaints. In addition, I have experience on being an admin on many Gmod Roleplay servers.
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? I played on CaptainEnglish´s infestation station (later on renamed to Colonial Marines) since from its early development.
Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? I have not made applications previously.
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No, except that I sometimes run a Gmod server to play with my friends, but other than that no.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.
1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
I would check what is the player firing at. If the player is firing at other marines, I would put the player to sleep and tell people in the briefing to stop firing if they are firing back at him once he is put in sleep. Then I would start to question the player and the players he fired at to solve if the reason for opening fire at the others was legitimate. I would also check the logs and variables while waiting for PM replies to figure out more information. If the reason was not legitimate and considered griefing, I would rejuvenate all players who did not fire back and have a ban applied to griefer. On the other hand, if the player didn't have harmful intent and was new to the game, I would tell him this is mediumRP server and link them to the guides, roleplay guidelines and rules, politely asking the new player to read those.
If the firing was not directed at anyone, but just at objects and structures such as windows, I would not intervene, expecting MPs to deal with it ICly.
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
Check the variables to get information on what caused it, then I would fix the breach. After fixing the breach I would check the logs and use the information I received from variables to figure out who did it. I would start to question the player who caused the breach to find out the motive for breaching. If the player´s explanation points at unintentional and accidental breaching, I would simply tell them to be more careful next time. If the player´s breaching was intentional, I would check their notes. If they had no notes pointing out to this kind of behavior, I would give them a warning and issue a note. If they had a history of behavior like this, I would issue a ban, length determined on how bad records they have.
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
Tell the marines I am not allowed to give out nuke codes, because only head admin is. I would give them a M.O.T.H.E.R report, to give the marines a more realistic impression on the situation.
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
If the super grenade was used for griefing, Sulaco researcher is held partly responsible for it. I would check the researcher´s notes and again if he had no history of this behavior, I would issue a temporary job-ban and a note for the researcher. If he had history of bad behavior like this, a permanent job-ban (if moderators can issue it) and an in-game ban is in place. If it appears that the marine who threw the grenade had a griefing intent, I would issue a ban and a note. If it was how ever roleplayed properly and there was no griefing intent, I would tell the marine that napalm is banned because it causes complications to atmospherics. I would also remind everyone on OOC that using napalm grenades is banned, to stop the other marines with such grenades from using them.
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
I would ignore it. If the player fills the admin help with this so it hinders me from doing my job, I would tell the player to stop sending useless messages to admin help. If he still keeps sending them completely ignoring what I told them, I would mute the player from admin help and issue a note.
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
Reminding the marine that this is mediumRP server and they need a first and last name according to rule #2 should be done. I would ask him to choose a proper name and change it (if I had access to do so, otherwise I would ask a higher ranked admin to change the name), in addition I would tell them to get their name on their ID changed. A note should be written in this case. I would check the player´s notes just to be sure he does not happen to be experienced RPer and previous griefer. If it appears that the rule was broken intently for giggles, a short ban is in place.
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would tell the marine that him using the name for several years does not justify the name on this server and point out that rule 0.1 clearly states you should read all the rules and ignorance is not an excuse. Remind the marine that they should read the rules now and tell him that he also argued with staff and that behavior would not cause any good to him in the future if he keeps it up. Add a note in this case.
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
PM the doctor that he is not allowed M41A rifle and ask the doctor to drop it. Tell him that he should do his job and go to treat the patients and that he is allowed a pistol with 2 magazines after the Sulaco is boarded. Add a note in this case. If the player has broken the doctor rules before and it has been marked to notes, I would issue a job-ban and a note explaining it.
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Clarify to squad medic that he is to only stabilize the patient so they can be treated at the Sulaco. Explain that only Sulaco Doctors and CMO are allowed to perform actual surgery and it is almost always done on the Sulaco. A warning and a note should be given because it is clearly against Squad Medic rules.
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I would leave interfering with the round to higher ranked admins, because as a moderator I am not allowed to make events which could speed up the round. All actions that speed up the round should be done ICly, such as marines using the information given by M.O.T.H.E.R or if they contact USCM via fax or communications console.
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
Ban the player for ERG for 3 hours and add a note.
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
This is one of those things where admin interference can ruin the IC gameplay experience for the players. MPs should be able to handle such IC issue by themselves. How ever, if the player does it every single round just to be a massive annoyance, I would refer him to "Don´t be a dick rule" and give him a warning + note for the breaking that rule. If he continues slipping the marines with soap on the next round even after the warning, a short ban of 3-12 hours is reasonable depending on his previous record.
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Continue questioning the marines and figure out if the proper RP escalation has been made: "Argument>Pushing/Shoving/punching>Melee weapons>Guns", I would check the variables and logs while waiting for PM replies. If the situation was legitimate, stop interfering. On the other hand, if there was no proper escalation, for example simply opening fire and killing the other marine for getting punched at, it would be good to explain to the marine who killed the other that the situation would had needed to be escalated by either punching/shoving back or using a melee weapon. Apply a 3 hour ban and a note if the marine has no history of this behavior. If he has history of similiar behavior apply a longer ban. If the punching marine used lethal force to defend himself from the lethal assault, I would not heal him.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
I noticed you are in need of staff and there is lack of staff from Eastern European timezone, so I want to offer my help and reduce your stress because this seems like a correct type of server for me. I rarely join a community this deeply, but once I do, I tend to want offer it all help I can. This is my second SS13-related community which I have joined and the first one was the NSS-Gamers´ version of Colonial marines. Why both are related to Marines vs Aliens gameplay might be explained with that I enjoy that kind of gameplay and like the games and movies related to the Aliens. Military roleplay is also very interesting which is the other reason why I like playing here.

Specifically because you answered on the same line as the question I'm going to drop a -1.
However, because you followed instructions with the second half and gave decent answers that show a lot of common sense I'll raise back to sit at a:
Neutral.

Re: Grypho - Moderator Application
Hello,
yes I answered the upper questions on the same line but not the common staff situations. In my opinion the instructions tell me to not answer the common staff situation questions on the same line, but there are no instructions on which line I should answer from for the upper questions (from BYOND ID to "have you banned banned from colonial marines?). Other applicants did the exact same as me and they did not get any feedback about it, leaving me to assume that one may do it. I might be wrong about it but this is how I understood I should do it, based on the given instructions and the etiquette of applying here.

Re: Grypho - Moderator Application
You know, I re-read this application because I thought it was a new one and I completely kept the whole same line for the first half out of mind and I actually thought it was pretty great. I'll switch to a +1
Additionally, your calm and collected factual response to me was a killer, keep that type of stuff going.

Re: Grypho - Moderator Application
Personally, I don't know you well icly and your key is faintly familiar, but I'm not sure why, so that's kind of a downside.
On the upside, it was a pretty good application, above mediocrity, but still solid.

Re: Grypho - Moderator Application
I am founder of Peace Sector gaming group (one year old group) which develops Nova Prospekt RP for Gmod and we have one server, but a lot of it is ran by my friends (and some of our dedicated users) and I have to only intervene if server is down or something critical like that. It does not require much of my time, as I only host it and other guy develops it, it is not that popular with 28 max player slots and I spend a lot of my time playing other games and SS13 (this being the only server I play). As I said in my application, I sometimes run a server.
I have hosted the server since December and in my opinion it hasn´t affected my activity on your server and forums radically. I am just asking to give me a chance to prove that I am really a man of my words and that I am able to work on your server at minimum 25 hours a week like promised. But I fully understand if you don´t want to.
