On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
10
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
No
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
No
What other servers do you play on?
Used to play on Paradise, been trying the Fallout server this week.
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
I used to play paradise, started on goon for a few days. Found CM way back in September of 2015 and never had much interest in others until the Fallout one.
Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before?
Yes, a pred app.
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
Nope
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Nope, never been banned on any ss13 server ever.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)?
Nope
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Yes, currently downloaded on my phone so I could familiarize myself with it for this app.
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.
1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
► Show Spoiler
1) Sleep the player (due to the risk of injury to other players) unless MPs appear to be able to handle the situation IC (To follow the directive of minimizing round disruption)
2) Ask the player why they were firing, along with witnesses. Most likely it’s going to be a griefer and earn a ban and note for griefing, but in the event that it was the end of proper escalation I would allow the matter to be dealt with IC.
3) If they were a griefer and wounded multiple marines I would get a more experienced staff (ideally an admin) to heal them and ensure no one was missed.
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
► Show Spoiler
1) I’d check to see if it was caused by a pred bomb (should have obvious pred gibs) otherwise plug the hole and investigate which player caused it.
2) I’d pm the player asking what happened, to determine if the breach was intentional or not. Meanwhile I’d check their notes to see if they have a history of the behavior.
3) If they did not intend to breach and did not have a history I’d advise them to be careful and put a note on their account about accidental breaching. (To prevent a player repeatedly claiming it was an accident)
4) If they have a history of breaching I’d apply a ban appropriate to the number and severity of notes after sending the player a message stating the rule they broke so they know why they are being banned.
5) If they have a history of breaching but state that it was an accident I’d ask more experienced staff for their input.
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
► Show Spoiler
Only heads can give out nuke codes, tough cookies for the marines. I’d send them a delightful personal message reminding them of that rule if there was no head on, otherwise I’d probably let a head handle a nuke code request.
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
► Show Spoiler
1) I would sleep the marine that threw the grenade and ask why they threw it. Most likely he was being a griefer, as there aren’t many IC reasons to throw a grenade there. I would also heal the victims of the grenade, if any.
2) I would send an OOC message that napalm grenades are not allowed due to the atmos issues and lag they cause, and ask every marine with one to ahelp so I can delete them.
3) I would warn the researcher that they are responsible for the grenades they hand out, that they shouldn’t make napalm due to atmos issues (is napalm still even in the code?) and add a warning note to their ckey. I would also send a message in staff chat about a possible job ban from researcher due to making napalm and a grenade they handed out being used for griefing.
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
► Show Spoiler
1) Politely inform player that he was breaking rule one and if warn they persisted would be banned.
2) If player persists I would send a message informing them that they would be banned, and apply a short ban.
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
► Show Spoiler
1) Send a PM linking the naming rules and informing them that the name does not fit our naming rules, and ask what name they would like it to be instead. If they give a serious answer I’d change their name and make a note about the name that didn’t fit the rules. If they give a non-serious name I’d give them one chance and then assign them John or Jane Smith.
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
► Show Spoiler
1) I would say that while I sympathized, lack of enforcement before is not sufficient reason to not enforce the rule now. I would inform them the server rules explicitly say that ignorance is not an acceptable excuse.
2) I would offer once to change their name to something appropriate and if they continued to argue would give them a warning and then if they still continued a short ban.
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
► Show Spoiler
1) I would send a PM informing them that doctors are not allowed to carry or use rifles unless their life is in immediate danger, and ask them to drop the weapon.
2) If they drop the weapon, I’d warn them not to do that in the future apply a note that a warning was issued.
3) If they don’t drop the weapon, I’d give them another warning and then apply a job-ban if they didn’t comply for doctor and CMO and let them know they could appeal on the forums.
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
► Show Spoiler
1) I would remind him that medics aren’t allowed to perform surgery and that lack of a doctor is not sufficient excuse and add a note. If he continues to perform surgery I would apply a medic job-ban, and tell them they may try to appeal on the forums.
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
► Show Spoiler
1) I would use M.O.T.H.E.R. to verbally encourage the marines/xenos to attack (I’d want whichever side was stronger to attack, which could be xenos if they are the queen and 3 elite T3)
2) I’d ask an admin if we could do an event where we did a supply drop on the planet of powerful weapons and ammo, to encourage the marines to get their dirty hands on say, a case of draganovs. Idea being that they could get to the weapons without being beaten by the xenos they should be easily able to win with superior weaponry.
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
► Show Spoiler
1) Send the marine a message about our EORG rules and explain to them they would be receiving a 3 hour ban. I’d send an OOC message reminding the whole server of our EORG rules.
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
► Show Spoiler
1) I’d see if he was doing anything besides being annoying, and give the MPs a chance to handle the situation.
2) If MPs weren’t responding I would see if marines were going to handle it themselves.
3) If marines were unable to handle it IC I would send the player a message asking that they stop slipping marines.
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
► Show Spoiler
1) I would ask him and the other marine what events transpired before shooting the marine, and check to the logs to see if the proper escalation was used.
2) If proper escalation was used it is an IC issue, so I would take no action other than letting the marine know that it did not appear any rules were broken.
3) If proper escalation did not occur, I would link the rules for proper escalation and check their notes to see if they had a history of this rule break
4) If the player had a history of improper escalation they would likely receive a ban relative to the number and severity of notes.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
My day job is working with children involved in the child protective system, so things like rules and protocol are part of my day to day, along with anger diffusal and dealing with sometimes unreasonable people. I’ve never been a mod or admin in SS13 before but I’m a quick study for various systems and I currently only have 1 warning on my record on CM.
I’m heavily involved in the Xeno community, donated shortly after joining the server, and am now at a point where I’m looking to give back time to the server and playerbase. I regularly ahelp issues when I see them in game, and have always been helpful and respectful to staff.
Thank you for your time!
