Carl Beckett: (insane) CO

Post by Dyne » 09 Apr 2016, 00:41

Your Byond Key: Dyne667

Your Character Name: Natalie 'Snow' Reyes

Accused Byond Key(if known): unknown

Character Name: Carl Beckett

Approximate time and date of the incident (Central US Time for fastest results): 1:52 am on Apr 8, 2016

What rule(s) were broken:
Marine Rule 3. (Incompetent Marines - The Colonial Marines wouldn't hire people with missing limbs (unless you had robotic replacements) or mental issues that cause them to harm themselves or fellow marines due to insanity.)
Possible metagaming cooperation as well.

Description of the incident:

Marines have some back-and-forthcwith the aliens, fallback to a very well fortified FOB in Nexus (grilles, plasteel barricades, three-four sentries, mines).
Then all marines are ordered to evacuate the planet, which they do in relatively good order (some infected).
The CO gathers the marines in the briefing room and literally says to them " Now we need to retake the planet, off you go".
When the pod is called up by command it is full of any alien imaginable, including the Queen.
Marines lose lower deck almost instantly, try to hold upper deck, someone on the bridge (supposedly CO) lowers all blast doors, leading to most defenders cut off, hugged, and, eventually, dead.
Lockdown is not lifted despite multiple shouts from marines and surviving SL.
CO proceded to say: Carl Beckett [Sulaco (CO)] says, "God be with you, marines. He is all that can save us now.
Supermatter goes boom.

In my opinion the player portraying CO was in direct violation of marine rule 3, as this is insane incompetence, literally giving aliens all the planet with no justification whatsoever, and leading to loss of the ship with all hands.
I also suspect it was a case of meta-communication, so the player playing CO collaborated with one or several players portraying aliens, and the CO player orchestrated such a chain of events, unafraid of punishment as no admin or moderator was online.

Evidence (screenshots, logs, etc):
Log availible form the last part of defense, will present if requested.

How you would punish the accused:
Ban from any and all Command roles.
Permaban if the investigation upports the metagaming cooperation suspicion.

Yeah, he was a pretty incompetent commander, when the aliens boarded the sulaco, we were fighing them well but then, he used the lockdown for no reason while a lot of marines were in engineering, then all aliens rushed in the ladders of engineering and killed most of the marines while they were yelling at the commander to remove the lockdown, i was the cmo that round.

I attempted to get the Commander to lift the lockdown on both command and general comms, and he refused. Approx 15-25 marines were slaughtered. The recall order was insane and caused my squad to fragment instantly on return to the Sulaco as half wanted to mutiny and 1/3rd stayed on the planet.

While the way he handled the end of the round may not have been the best the rest of his RP was perfectly fine thoughout the game. This is an IC issue that could have been handled via mutiny and I cannot find any meta or possible cooperation with aliens.

I am sorry, please elaborate how exactly is calling off the entire marine force off the planet (for no discernable reason or purpose), and then sending the force in question back to retake said planet "perfectly fine RP" for a marine CO?

You can't mutiny with the entire ship's shutters down and xenos pouring through vents, sorry.

In all honesty I find that it's because of marines that fail to follow orders as to why the commanders tactics useally fail.

Falling back to the sulaco, regrouping and starting a massive counterattack is a great stratagy when your forces listen to you and execute it properly. Im not saying it was you that didn't follow orders becuase it tends to be squad leaders that fail to bring their men back and follow orders.

So yes. It does make perfect sense to me if someone where to call back their forces after positive identification of a threat that is more powerfull then any one of your units and push back again after everyone has regrouped rather then put yourself into a defensive position that will result in you being surrounded and cut off.

I understand what Allan is saying here.... this is a IC issue that CAN be dealt with through IC events.

However!

We should not promote players to take extreme measures to ensure round stability. Commanders or players in high position need to be held accountable for potentially ruining entire rounds. We also shouldn't be promoting people to mutiny every time there's a shit Commander.

Why cant you gather all your units without leaving a fortified position, master tactician?
All the squads were planetside.

In this case marine forces followed the order to the letter. They gave up defensive positions, got people infected in the retreat, and then recieved a one line order to retake what they just lost.
No explanation, no squad orders, nothing.
You cant both urge us to mutiny and to follow orders at the same time.

The round is said and done, yet i do not want this same situation to repeat again, hence the report.
You will also note that I am far from the only player that had this experience and estimation of the round.

The reason for marines not following orders is extremely simple- often orders are given by absolutely incompetent officers.
In this case the level of incompetence was insane, literally.
If admins decide not to take action even in such an extreme case you will just see more mad CO's that literally cause the loss of any fighting chance and orders not being followed.

We will work something out regarding this. I will talk to some staff members and get their opinions on it. Normally I would always suggest handling a situation once it gets out of hand and I will keep a bit more of a eye on said player for a bit. Locked and resolved.
