Replace the Commander Whitelist with an Admiral Whitelist as Before

Post by NoahKirchner » 12 Dec 2016, 20:00

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Replace the Commander Whitelist with an Admiral Whitelist, then add a 14 day time requirement to be able to play Commander to the game.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
  • You are no longer taking away a role from a good majority of the playerbase that they have previously been able to play a lot.

You are not limiting someone's ability to play a role to how other players think of them (Bill Carson, for example. Not a horrible CO, but everyone hates him as a CO.)

No longer having the Commander Whitelist be a giant circlejerk as it is currently, because I assume the admiral will be a more important position and as such will be judged harsher.

Allow people who wish to play Command rules properly be able to play Command rules. If someone plays XO because they are not whitelisted to play Commander but still wish to Command and have written up a plan, they will not then suddenly be a subordinate to a CO and not able to operate on that plan.

You still have the chance to get a less than competent CO, as opposed to being drilled before your application is accepted to make sure that you are super CO. Sometimes having an incompetent area of Sulaco staff requires planetside marines or other departments to improvise, which makes every round unique as opposed to everything running smoothly ever round (which, while on paper sounds good, would get boring really quickly imo.)

The time limit on Commander will reduce (I admit, not entirely remove) the chance of getting a super-bald CO without limiting everyone else's fun.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): Remove the Commander Whitelist, reword the application rules to have it be for an Admiral, and give the Admiral the fancy tools you were talking about. Add a fourteen day time limit on being able to play Commander so players are forced to learn the game a bit first before they have the ability to lead the ship.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): A bit of rewriting on the forums and some coding.

Note: This is not supposed to be a provocative or inflammatory thread, I just wanted to open up a discussion on the matter and not start a flame war or anything.

Expanding on what Feweh said, but we had a lengthy discussion about this. Apop does not want admirals to be a whitelisted thing where players can wrestle away control from the CO. The intent of the whitelist is to allow marines to have competent command, as approved by the community, who are not baldies. Hence, this is the compromise we came up with. A CO whitelist that fulfills every criteria that we wanted, and is lore friendly to the position required for such a role.
