Military ranks for doctors and CMO

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): A pretty simple suggestion, both engineers and cargo techs have a military rank aboard the ship, but doctors and the CMO have no rank, which makes little sense as civilian doctors do not work in the military.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): More accurate lore wise and makes the chain of command clearer.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): It would simply be a matter of changing ID cards i'm pretty sure

I +1 this, I always thought the Doctors and CMO were Civilians aboard the ship filling medical roles. Same with Researchers they're just civilian scientists etc.

+1 for so many reasons I can't even begin to get in to. It will solve a lot of IC issues that can crop up in some rounds.

Thing is though, aren't the Maintenance staff and Cargo techs trained soldiers? (got promoted from being a grunt and ended up working in some specialized department?) I always thought the Medical staff were simply Civilian personnel contracted from their typical hospital jobs to work in the military.

While I agree with you, the USCMC doesn't work like a normal military in game. Totally could have civilian doctors on it.

I wouldn't say it's fair, as every other non combat job has a rank except CL which pretty much has the highest authority anyway

Realistically a doctor is an LT and a CMO is a major, but of course thats way too high, id say corp or sarg as doctor and LT as cmo, LT is still the lowest rank of any department head.

Edit: forgot RO is ensign, so it would be up for debate. Although id argue that medical is a far larger and more important department.

What you need to realise is that without Cargo, then all supplies are limited. With Cargo, you can always order more.

I'll +1 this. Doctors are officers in the military. Going based off the Marines, they have no medical department. So, the doctors would need to be in the Navy because that's what the Marines use for medical staff. I don't think that CMO being a major would be too high. A lead medical professional in the military wouldn't be a low ranking officer. Without medical you won't get injured marines healed, and there for you'll lose a lot faster.

Even the Marines don't have medics, they have Corpsman. Which are Navy attached to Marines company's.

The USCM is it's own force, 'Colonial Marines', not 'Marine Corps'.

Didn't appear resolved. I understand the researchers and Chemists being civvies, but the armed forces have a huge academy for medical training at Ft Sam Houston for their Doctors. (Was there myself recently!)

I think the biggest thing this will "contribute" to RP is a bit more order in Medbay. (From those that RP properly)

Having an LT tell a Marine (PFC) to bugger off for a splinted (stabilized) hand/groin will have more value than some civvy saying the same. I'd reckon that it would add more of a military feel to medbay, just my humble opinion!

Just to point out something, because I have seen this more and more often lately.

Real life Military doesn't directly = CM.

This used to be a hotly contested issue in the past because back then there was a blanket ban on many roles, in this case Doctors, Researchers and the CMO, from ever having a fire arm, with the rules (last I recall) pretty much saying in a worst case scenario they should only use a pistol, and they could only use a M41A if it was the only thing they had access to, but they would have to drop it after using it.

Now that anyone can carry a sidearm at all times, and there's no major weapon restrictions for medical personnel, this issue became more of a moot point.

I would support giving the CMO a military rank or at least expanded authority, such as being able to overrule the decision of anyone, including the Commander, when it comes to medical orders.
