Alien X-Ray vision suggestions

Post by Lostmixup » 25 May 2015, 23:17

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Change the way the alien's X-Ray vision works as to make it more interesting to use and counter. (Disclaimer: I'm no coder so I don't know how complicated coding any of these suggestions could be, if it's too hard to implement that's for the actual coders to say).

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
In general it could spice up gameplay on both sides of the coin, allowing for more options for both alien and marines to fight each other. Depending on how it's implemented it could provide a way for humans to escape the clutches of aliens while captured or give the humans (specifically survivors) more options when running around. It could also give aliens some interesting trade offs (being able to see health levels but not what species the life form is, or having more health and attack power but less X-Ray range).

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Here's a few suggestions (as mentioned in mini-chat once) that could be interesting and not totally game breaking if implemented. These are just concepts that are compiled together. I'm not suggesting that all of them be implemented or that only one be implemented.

1. Use a highlighted area to represent the locations of suitable host. Would give out their locations, but not the exact positions. (there's a giant red blob of color in the other room, perhaps there's a lot of people there).

2. The x-ray vision relies on motion instead of just plain being x-ray vision. If the person is running it senses them as normal. If the person is walking it can only sense them X Distance away or something similar. Likewise this could also apply to the alien; when the alien is moving they can't sense as far but when they're standing still they are focusing in a sense allowing them to see further. This version of the X-Ray vision could also allow aliens to see people within a 1-2 tile radius of them (basically can see through a wall if they're next to it) regardless of if they're moving or not so that locker hiding isn't as effective.

3. Instead of simply being able to tell what the living thing is wearing and what it is, it's instead a colored shape, such as a dot. Different colors could be used to tell the lifeforms health level. The aliens, however, would be unable to tell the difference between an animal type host or a human type host (the shapes would be the same).

4. Make it so different caste have different ranges on their X-Ray visions. The Drones could have half the range of the current X-Ray vision, while the Ravenger could have the standard range for X-Ray vision (just an example). This could perhaps force people to play certain roles with certain classes of aliens.

These are multiple concepts mentioned in the mini-chat one day (after I started complaining about not being able to escape from aliens XD) that I thought worked well enough to be considered. If you came up with an idea feel free to take credit.

What if aliens had a motion tracker ui? Except no pings, and green dots for anything non Alien? Could just make it into an alien verb.

Was it you I was speaking to about this the other day? I brought up the idea of if the marines are walking they have a decreased chance of sensing the player in deadchat a few days ago.

I mostly agree with this except for the removal of x-ray, according to the AVP games- and suggested in other things- Aliens use pheremones to locate their prey, which grants them he ability to sense biotic organisms around them, which is implemented in the form of x-ray.

I still say making some changes to how it works would be good. Specifically the color coding change might be a good one if you wanted to keep it pretty much the same.

-1. There is literally no reason for the aliens to recieve such a huge and complicated nerf to the way they are played, whatsoever. They're already getting nerfed constantly as is, no reason to continue adding to the mix simply because you dislike being caught.

It doesn't have to be huge and complicated. As stated in suggestion #3 it could be a change that is still X-Ray vision, just changed a bit bringing new advantages and disadvantages making it more fun for both sides (not being able to tell if a human is downed or not through walls because it's just a colored shape).

I do dislike being caught, but I tried to make the suggestions in a way that didn't completely nerf the ability just change it to make it more interesting to use and counter. I think suggestion #3 was yours in the first place by the way, correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, I never suggested anything like this. It'd honestly be a huge nerf either way to aliens and the way they are played, all 3 suggestions.

It sounds complicated, and hunting aliens die enough already as it is. All this does it make it more likely they'll be seen by marines, since they'll have to be more open with their searching if they can't see as much. And aliens aren't supposed to be seen, they are supposed to be ninja sneaks.
I play Xeno 99% of the time. All castes.

-1 NERF, and this sounds more like a cross between Thermal and x-ray vision
