Add a Scan Button

Post by Lostmixup » 08 Jun 2015, 09:25

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Add a "request scan" button into the communications console.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
Would allow command to have a better idea of what's happening in the field without having to go down their themselves, or rely on marines 100% (cause let's' be honest, that don't work). People already ask for it themselves, so may as well make it a feature!

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Basically, add an official button for requesting a scan of the Nostromo/Sulaco. Possibly one for either or. It would only scan for enemies and would either A: tell their general location (east side/engineering) or B: tell how many are left, receptively.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
A simple button on the communications console

+1 That lone Queen hiding in the bar backroom, but we need more Admuns since this needs Staff help

This might be doable.

We need a condition. Perhaps have the marines need to set up a scanning device in areas. Otherwise, the moment first contact is made, marines do a scan and instantly know where the hive is.

Granted, the hive is only ever in Virology or Xenobiology, as those are really the only good spots for a hive, but the marines aren't supposed to know that.

However, the invaluability of knowing that yes, there is one drone just sitting in the toilet and that's all the aliens left, is a definite must.

Well, the scan requires the admins to determine how much information they want to give...

It's perfectly fine because it's situation, the admin's can say if it's early "still charging" or something; near the end of the round they can say "there's aliens in engineering, can't tell how many" or something similar.

Exactly. Which is why I don't think we'd need a condition, maybe just a cooldown.

A 30 minute cooldown would probably work. Possibly longer.

Another way to do this is have stationary motion detectors. They detect a fairly large radius and if anything other than a marine moves, it makes a noise. Its not a precise direction, no dot is visable, but its helpful for determining where they MIGHT be.

Of course, said motion detectors would be inherently fragile and need to be wrenched onto a wire.

Perhaps use the stationary flash device's icon for it?

if they need a wire then would be difficult, and if they are military equipment they should be at least a little bit rugged. I mean the handheld ones are ruggedized. If they are stationary then they should have a menu of sorts because a sound is almost as useless.

I think, it's better for us to keep it as is, with RP requests to Centcom, or as rewards for not sucking.

In my honest opinion, you'd have to wait for 30 minutes to get a scan, and then leave it on cooldown for another 30 minutes.

Would help speed up slow rounds without admins.

I also personally think having it only work when admins aren't on would be good.

Denied. There will be a "scan" feature on the alpha eventually.
