MAKE A PLAYER POPULATION LIMIT (or find a way to limit overflow, really)
I already know a couple of people dislike this idea, and think it's totally great to be overflown with a chat that rolls by faster than you can respond or think about anything, or others that are just uncertain .. Well i don't really care. We never made accommodations for this many players, so i'm making this suggestion because it seriously needs to be considered.
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): A player population limit, around 70 (i'd have a bit lower than that, honestly but eh...) to limit waaay too many people joining/marine horde. (excess newcomers, visitors from other servers, server hoppers or what have you ..)
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): From personal experience, i don't think very cohesive roleplay can exist at 40+ players, but CM is pretty different and being an action server the roleplay isn't carried out in the say way as other servers.. It's hard to compare, but the chaos is still unecessary and the various things 100+ players can put pressure on is as well. What we would have, which i've seen myself, when we're at 60 players (very rare now) is a calmer environment that is MUCH more manageable and enjoyable. Albeit, the chat still moves awfully fast depending on what's happening. Overall roleplay would be more COMMON, we could promote it better .. For most of my time on SS13 when i've not been on CM, i've been on servers with anything from 15+ to 30 players. With 15 being pretty gentle but enjoyable, and 30 being a bit more hectic but still entertaining and enjoyable. Again, CM is very different but i think several people can agree with me when i say that 50-70 players is A LOT better than 90 or 120+.. Issues would also be solved MUCH faster, considering the actual size of the staff team.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): A message would be given to players (not staff, maybe not donors?) trying to join if the limit is hit saying, "The server is overpopulated, please try again later." Again, this might seem unreasonable to some to deny what would be regular players here who are active on the forums and server but haven't donated/aren't staff.. But there are going to be just as many newcomers/server hoppers/goon rejects that are denied access as them, if not much more.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Lifeweb has a thing where they put an automatic 1 second long ban i believe on people if they try to join while it's overpopulated .. Could do that, or code something into server settings (?)
This hasn't been discussed that much before, really. It's just getting a bit ridiculous, when (in my opinion) it could be easily avoided.

Re: MAKE A PLAYER POPULATION LIMIT (or find a way to limit overflow, really)
The Alpha was officially released only a few days ago, I would naturally expect the game's population to remain high for at least another week or two.
I tend to dislike population caps for SS13, but I think this discussion should wait for at least a week or two so we can gauge how the average server population is when things have settled down, instead of taking a hasty action now and suffering negative consequences later.

Re: MAKE A PLAYER POPULATION LIMIT (or find a way to limit overflow, really)
Mmm, and that's more of my point though .. Once we move into something new, maybe it's just a big update ... And population will still explode.
Actually, thinking over it now that you reminded me... Regular population, i doubt would be much lower. Seeing how classic old CM got an average of fucking 50 players, even when no updates happened.. And we're in alpha now. That's still an awful lot of players, and like i said it only gets more excessive when we make things more interesting (which is a given).
I'm not against reviving this thread again if it does become invalid at some point later, i'm just saying .. Since we never expected this many players, and most of the time there are only around 2-3 staff on.

+1 Theres been too many players coming from other servers going and just doing random stuff, trying to hardcore RP, No RP, and following their server rules instead of ours in return us sufferering ourselves.

It'll cool down eventually, I'd be comfortable with 80ish players though.

Re: MAKE A PLAYER POPULATION LIMIT (or find a way to limit overflow, really)
Well i might be gone for a week because of moving out so it might be kind of retarded to make this if the pop suddenly dies out during that time, but still.. This many players is extremely painful to handle, both for staff and for the players who need help from staff

We are blessed however
If i'm not wrong, we haven't had someone to get on and spam "Woody's got Wood" yet
So that's a good note
Getting back on track I think the population ordeal is just fine considering the combatants are out in the wide open ranges
If this was a normal station I wouldn't be as comfortable

The only way to lower it is to remove the word "Alpha" it's a very popular word, and probably the only reason some people come on.

Well if the population constantly stays above 100+ we could always do what goon did and just start a second CM server hosted by apop

I would say implement an 100 player limit just for the purposes of preventing lag. That's just me though.apophis775 wrote:I will never limit player counts.

Locked.
Again, I won't limit players.
