Reduce Pain from Xeno Blood

Post by Evilkyle24 » 17 Aug 2015, 21:32

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Reduce the amount of pain that xenomorph blood causes to marines, it is WAY too high right now. Two squirts can put you almost into paincrit while actually causing less than 50% damage.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
Prevents marines from deciding "Well, I have blisters on my right arm, I can't walk or use my left arm now."

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Currently the amount of pain damage a marine incurs from Xeno blood instantly knocks their HUD health into orange, however anyone with a medical scanner can see that their health is actually yellow-green. These are people who are trained and practiced killers, some light burns aren't going to instantly make them helpless, especially when there's a gigantic black insect monster marching towards them that just tore off their buddies face. People in real life have been reported to sustain heavy injuries and not notice a damn thing until it was pointed out or combat ended. Combine the marine's incredibly low pain resistance and their complete lack of adrenaline with the fact that command decided none of them need those painkiller pills and bandages, and the marines can be incapacitated from pain long before they're actually incapacitated.

Keep in mind we have a method of incapacitating people due to extreme injury, its called Critical Condition, and that's effectively half health, considering that they must then take another 100 damage to be killed.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
Tweak the numbers regarding paincrit. Perhaps make marines crawl slowly instead of completely incapacitating them to the point where they can't even trigger a grenade lying directly in front of them, or draw their pistol and take a few shots.

I killed an alien as a survivor, I died due to acid.

Acid is meant to be OP. In-universe it melts though star-ship deck plates after-all...

Kind of funny how that acid blood is completely ineffective when its on the ground to the point where having your boots covered in it does nothing, and it doesn't melt the steel knife you're jamming into the alien or your clothes, but it instantly sears your skin.

Right, but the actual damage incurred by the acid blood in game is rather low. The amount of pain it deals would be more akin to the in universe damage, because in universe a single splash would melt your entire arm off.

Well to be fair lore wise Corporal Hicks got sprayed lightly by a close range attack from a Xeno and he ended up being incapacitated, with his armour melting away and himself effectively being rendered utterly combat ineffective. The only reason he survived was that he was right next to the dropship thus allowing him to be carried to it by Ripley.

In game wise I do think the acid should be less 'fuck you'. Especially since it seems to be semi-rng if you get hit with acid or not.

Edit: We already take some liberties with the lore (see facehuggers) so I don't think it would be a bad idea to scale back the damage acid does.
This is war, survival is your responsibility.

Its less about the damage the acid actually does to you and more about the disproportionate amount of pain.
Remember that Hicks had his armor start MELTING, and it would have burned through and into his chest, killing him, without immediate help.
In this game, you get some minor burns and a shit ton of PAIN.

I remember in the movie that the dreadlocks guy carrying the cripple on the ladder got almost his entire body paralyzed from getting a tad spit on his cheek.

Maybe it has more poisonous/crippling properties than just the burns.

The problem is the damage it does is minor but the pain you feel is enough to make you go into pain crit..

So +1 to this.

EMR/Firefighter here

Your body goes into shock when combatting any form of chemical burns or ingestions. Essentially freezing up and slowing down your blood circulation to stop any further chemical damage.

While acid blood is burning it's the chemical process that causes the burn to make the body react in that way.

Adrenaline kicks in from the pain eventually and releases your body from the circulation restriction!

Right but your adrenaline would already be pumping because you see the GIANT INSECT MAN murdering people and charging at you.

Also, this pain it causes NEVER goes away. I had it for over ten minutes once and was basically paralyzed the entire time. Pulled myself out of a nest and just flopped on the floor with a beacon right under me.

You want marines META-have tramadol always with them? Because that's how you make marines META-have tramadol always with them.

Burns pretty small, but pain is so much big, that I was lying in crit for fucking 10 minutes, didn't able to do thing, untill someone went to medbay and brought tramdol. Because of some fucking retarded marine, who point blanked dead alien near me, and instead of him I got acided.

In real life every soldier carries some basic firs aid kit, its not meta, its common sense not to bleed out.

No, Soldiers do not carry basic first aid kits. You carry a 2 bandages and your Biological Injectors. Squads have a medic, and teams/sections have a Combat Lifesaver.

-1. It's literally caustic. It's near deadly. It's a realistic amount of pain.

-1 If anything it should cause even more pain than it currently does to discourage marines from using knives to attack xenos.

+1, sometimes you're just going past the guy pointblanking a xeno, take the acid instead of him and are instantly rendered ineffective for combat for a long time, because medics can take their time, especially if it's a hive assault.

What's the message it gives you, when you get sprayed with the acid? Tell me that, and I'll look into it, but I don't exactly remember where the code is.
