Bring back Janitor role
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Bring back the janitor role. The Sulaco turns into a fucking riot towards the end and does my tits in. Also, might help lag?
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): A tidy ship is a happy ship! I also genuinely don't know if cleaning up all the items dumped from vendors would have any impact on lag at all.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): Bring back the Janitor role, trick him out with some good stuff to make it easier for him (Such as the water backpack and enlarged rubbish sacks) and some brave chap cracks on with it for the round. It'd probably be me. I love that shit.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Er. Bring it back?

No. Apophis already explained it in other Suggestion Topics which almost everyone has been bringing it up.

We need some way to clean up the ship.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

Medical Doctors and MT has been issued space cleaners in their departments. Go find them. I'm VERY sure about this.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
Medical Doctors are ALWAYS busy with surgery or otherwise treating critical marines lategame, and never have time to clean the entire Sulaco. Even then, they aren't fucking Janitor's, they're trained medical professionals.
Also, most of our MT players are shitters, as in I've only seen 1-3 good MTs that actually DO their jobs and maintain the Sulaco.
But instead of bringing back the Sulaco, I'd suggest adding a single Janiborg slot, easiest method to clean large messes as they just have to drive over them.

Can you direct me? I've searched for 'janitor' but can't see anything from Apop.UnknownMurder wrote:No. Apophis already explained it in other Suggestion Topics which almost everyone has been bringing it up.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
Meh. I see his reasoning, but I don't agree with it. The ship is always a mess. No-one's taking up the role of Janitor because it's, well, not their role.
You could have a Janitor role that spawns like an ordinary Marine, with access to a Maintenance room and who is most definitely not allowed to deploy planetside.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
I think Janitor should definitely be a role, Im sorry but ships DO carry Janitor-esque people IRL, with the amount of injured that come through the ship, the Marines cant AFFORD to have a fucking biohazard breeding ground sesspool as their halls and medbay, it's just not logical.
The role isn't anything bad and I don't see why Apop is so against it, it does nothing to DETRACT from the experience, and only serves to make the Sulaco cleaner, the lag less intensive, less infections/diseases and more realistic/immersive.

Janitor is a demotion job. That's all, like pirates. You swab the deck, and you are treated awful. You don't want to be that guy, don't be that guy.

They're more than busy enough as is; they don't have time to clean when things get heavy. Hell, Medbay often ends up being the filthiest place on the ship by far due to a combination of this, and marines bleeding everywhere plus heavy foot traffic. Expecting the most overworked players in the game to clean is not sensible.UnknownMurder wrote:Medical Doctors and MT has been issued space cleaners in their departments. Go find them. To some, it is considered in an honor, a commitment, and a fine duty to commend their effort towards the crew.
I'm that guy
If it wasn't important I wouldn't dedicate a whole backstory behind it
Everything I conducted in my previous thread is available for view above too, I hope my points were made thorough in there~
Janitor is in no way a demotion job. It is a CHOICE that one makes to stand by the regulations of having a successfully clean ship.
If you were to roleplay as a sleazy pirate figure, then sure, that'd be correct. But they're not all rebels strutting around in yellow boots.
It should be ones pleasure to know that they are ensuring a clean and well kept situation for the crew even in the most dire situation.
Yes, there is little to no prestige in this role, which inclines nasty comments towards you but, again, that is part of the roleplay aspect of it all.
The "Prestige" of being a Janitor is self-determined, people will ignore you, make fun of you, and do anything they can to make your job hell; this doesn't change the fact that for you are assisting in keeping a polished community while on deck.
While I've agreed with everything so far, this is one thing I would be disappointed to see.XanderDox wrote:I'd suggest adding a single Janiborg slot, easiest method to clean large messes as they just have to drive over them.
Part of the job is the interaction. No, you're not off combating the xeno threat but for a while, at least when they're available, communication can occur for further roleplay and general chats which can always be beneficial in a friendly manner.
Listen, I've plead for this to be a thing for a long time now, and there are actually people to stand by my side in this case
I hope you can review everything provided in this and my old thread and strive toward Janitor becoming apart of this game again.
Thank you for reading-

Re: Bring back Janitor role
What if the janitor was still a marine, but with his own designation? I'm at a crossroads because I agree with Apop that the sulaco wouldn't have a janitor, but I totally agree with you in that marines wouldn't treat their ship like a piece of garbage.TheCubscout wrote:

Either way it is clear how much you want this job and I pledge my +1 in the hopes that you get it.

I clean the ship as MT because there is not much to do if you are not particularly inventive/resourceful once the supermatter is set up (properly).

Re: Bring back Janitor role
As I mentioned before, if it feels immersion breaking, then the Janitor can just be a Marine Role. They dress like a Marine but with a different colour jumpsuit perhaps? No armour, maybe a sidearm?
There are lots of ways to bring this in without being immersion breaking.

Why is a ship having a staff member that maintains it immersion breaking, I am sure real naval vessels have civilian staff dedicated to cleaning the ship

That seems to be the current argument - that it's immersion breaking / not sticking to the realities of the situation in that USMC wouldn't have a janny running about. I beg to differ.XanderDox wrote:Why is a ship having a staff member that maintains it immersion breaking, I am sure real naval vessels have civilian staff dedicated to cleaning the ship

I would be fine with this, however, I believe it should be it's own individual spawn in option.
Janitor is most certainly not the role for everyone and having a marine randomly selected to be one would not turn out so well (They'd most likely ignore their duty and reside as a regular marine)
Having it as a spawn-in option would be perfect, or even, if necessary, the ability to be assigned as one specifically through the Identification console.
Another note I'd like to bring up, implementation-
If Janitor were to become a thing, they would definitely need an office to begin their shift from, here would be a perfect place:

There are already three Janicarts on the ship. Three!!
Three cleaner grenades
2 bottles of space cleaner and plenty more around the ship
One perfect trash bag for all the pesky wrapping marines leave behind.
All that is missing is a locker with those sparkly boots, official uniform, appropriate gloving, and a few more useful necessities like floor signs would be nice.
Most of the equipment is already there, just needs a few extra additions and the role to fit the top.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
Lets face it- janitor cleaning this mess is an interesting role.
Take it out of random assignments, if you are so afraid of people misusing the role.
For now a bloody messy ship hurts my immersions much more then any other concept of having a janitor around.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
im mixed on this one personally, on the one hand is it really that important? the medical doctors may not clean the whole ship but they will usually at LEAST take the time to make a few quick sprays of the medbay facilities to clean off the blood so that much of the ship is cleaned enough, the squad prep areas are always a gigantic fucking mess but on some level that may just be how it is, even in real life soldiers can be messy as hell when they're preparing to go to war, sure they keep shit nice and tidy when its inspection time but i dont think they actually care beyond that unless their personal discipline and professionalism insists upon a clean workspace.
on the OTHER hand it just isnt SS13 if you dont see someone slip at random only to immediately start screaming, "SIGNS!" just fucking over and over again, "SIGNS! WET FLOOR SIGNS! WHERE ARE THE SIGNS!? SIGNS!", if there WERE signs they'd just get back up and go about their business and if there were not any signs up you better believe the ENTIRE fucking ship would suddenly be chasing this asshole all over the place, all departments would drop what they were doing and chase this motherfucker because not putting wet floor signs was basically permission to horribly MURDER them for shits and giggles (same as how we could horribly murder the clown whenever we feel like it)
its been too long since i've seen people chase the janitor, goddamn i miss old style goonserver.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
I would be okay with Maintenance Techs basically being janitors along with engineers. Currently, there is a lot of downtime for MAintenance Tech. Giving them the job of cleaning the ship might not be a bad idea. It also kinda makes sense since they are "Maintenance" Technicians. However we don't have a proper Janitor closet. The closest to that is the maintenance doorway at the northern part of briefing. Coincidentally, that doorway requires engineering access. Guess what access Maintenance Techs have? Engineering. Simply supply that area with plenty of signs, two janicarts, trash bags, space cleaner, and a water tank or two. One or Two janitor closets are also necessary. Also rename the door to Janitor Closet, and change the door type, but not the access.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
It would hopefully be a role you can select in preferences just like the rest. You start in your office or out of hyper-sleep and you just crack on. There would need to be some suitable way to completely remove the items you collect from the game so that it has that impact on reducing any lag associated with craptons of items lying around, but otherwise, I know I'd be playing this lots and would really enjoy it.

Re: Bring back Janitor role
I think we should move janitor away from a "demotion" job and instead make it its own role. On the flip side, we should make "janitor's assistant" the demotion role; it'll have way less access and will be under the janitor. This way people who want to play janitor can, and people who are stupid can still be demoted.
