Crouching
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):a stance mode where you can switch between standing and crouching it will allow people who are not directly firing at you and standing behind you to shoot over you.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): gives benefits to using proper squad work. and reduces friendly fire
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):a simple toggle button on the HUD or in the status/ic tab that switches your stance. with it's own sprites (or not dont know how difficult that would be)it would not effect thrown huggers but would prevent spit and bullets from hitting you. unless someones directly firing at you aka clicking at you to shoot at you. while in this stance you would move slower or not at all and have increased accuracy and reduced recoil.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

Re: Crouching
This would be awesome if possible. I'm in favor of anything that reduces the chance of friendly fire, without actually removing it. I don't see why spit would be affected, but this would be pretty amazeballs with or without it affecting spit.
Let's say crouch drops your move speed to 'walk' levels, increases accuracy and decreases recoil while allowing friendly bullets to pass over you... then the next logical step is a prone stance, with the same 'ducking under the line of fire', but with movement completely disabled, and the accuracy/recoil modifications greater still.
But I think these would just further re-enforce marines turtling, which I think the devs are trying to discourage.

Re: Crouching
but it also would reduce turtling and increase teamwork because this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE-qXWr6ILY#t=17m03s imagine applying this in game? it would actually allow marines to push forward for once. because the entire way the game currently works is around guerrilla warfare. a war of attrition. each side is incapable of openly attacking against each other.
but it's not just about balancing the game. it's about the players and a large part of the turtling is rooted in the player and just how the game works. taking losses mean the side thats taking the losses will lose unless theres good players on the other side. which just ends up being turtling if there's say 5 aliens vs 80 marines or 10 marines vs 30 aliens.
if we actually had proper squad leadership and stuff and proper open tactics we could apply to this game. it would make the game more about skill and less about this side is too strong or that side is too strong.
i think the dev's are just going about it the whole wrong way in trying to reduce turtling
saying that i may just may a rant in general discus tomorrow about the whole problems with the current approach to the game from bolth dev's and players.

Re: Crouching
Just make it so that changing speed to "walk" would produce a chat message "Urist McMarine crouches" and some kind of visual indicator - making new sprites for crouched models would take years. No need to make this separate from walking speed.

I like the idea except in the spit thing.
Neutral, aliens need more buff in their spit.

Re: Crouching
like communism this is a brilliant idea on paper but in practice i feel it is unlikely to pan out in the manner you have in mind.
neverminding the difficulties in coding it and the manners in which it could significantly impact combat, player tactics and the balance therein this idea has been getting thrown around since Exadv1 coded, actually implementing it would require us to resprite every single item in the game that can be picked up or worn along with the combinations of items therein and if implemented would swamp the dev team so badly we wouldn't see them again until fallout new vegas was based on a true story, this came up many times in the old days when we first discussed the possibilities of ANY two handed firearm in the game and how we could move the arm sprites to better look like it was properly cradling the gun, much like would have been true then you would need an entire new dev team just to handle this ONE suggestion alone for an obscenely long time, sprites may not sound like alot of work in the grand scheme (and compared to coding it may be ALOT simpler) but that shit adds up when you have to do alot of it and the devs are occupied as is.
an interesting thought but it just isn't practical for SS13, maybe if we ever go 3D or completely overhaul the nature of how the game as a whole functions it can be revisited but until that time the best we can hope for is trying to find ways to mimic the effect you want to achieve without actually doing it directly.

Re: Crouching
The impact it would have on combat is kinda unnerving, too - unless it's coded that only people that stand next to you can fire over you, we would have corridors filled with 7 lines of marines firing over each other. Umad, smartgun?

Re: Crouching
This would be extremely difficult to do. We'd have to make hundreds of sprites to represent it. (every outfit would need an alternate crouching frame for all 4 directions including every single donor set)
I don't want to rain on the parade, but crouching and prone aren't feasible.
