Sonic Electronic BALL Breakers!

Post by monkeysfist101 » 01 Dec 2015, 09:28

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
This would add G2 Electroshock Grenades or Sonic Electronic Bouncing Bettie's to the game. They can be used to non-lethally subdue a Xeno for research. EMPs gear in its blast radius.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
With talk of expanding research to live test subjects, this would add a way to bring down a Xeno without shooting the crap out of it.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Once deployed, it would behave like the proximity mine with the exception of dealing stun damage.
Electronics that are caught in the blast would be drained.
Expensive to order.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
I doubt it's this simple, but much of what is needed to code this exists in the proximity mine and EMP Grenade code.

It would need to be stunned long enough to get it to research, which would suck for the player, or we need a way to restrain them.

I'm waiting to see how people respond to having a way to bring one down without hurting it before cluttering the suggestion thread with things like nets, collars, etc...

Electric collars using E-mag/Engineering research. Comes with a Collar Controller, if the xeno tries to escape, stun it for a similar time as an APC stun. No pain, just stun.

I remember in years past as a research director capturing an alien and putting an electro pack on it. Perhaps this can be done post-stun still? It's possible that it isn't in our code.

Of course to make said collars, you'd need tier 5 research in Electromagnetic Theory and Engineering. Possibly Tier 3/4 in Biology.

Who said "live" subjects for research?
Also, when Research comes it's gonna be a WHOLE NEW SYSTEM.

Why?

Why would we want live subjects now?

THINK ABOUT IT LIKE YOU'RE THE ALIEN~ Most would log out, since they would be knocked out and restrained

~They would try all they could to kill you and break out
~Specimen Containment can't contain shit, unless it's a hunting class or Hivelord
~This would be VERY annoying to Xeno players
~We can not to ANYTHING with Xeno right now, especially with how shit Containment is. No windows or anything.

Maybe some sort of harness that works so that its arms are restrained. And it's head locked in. This could only be made by a reasurcher once they have a dead alien corpse. I remember when you could restrain Xeno with hand cuffs.
The FitnessGram™ Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. [beep] A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound. [ding] Remember to run in a straight line, and run as long as possible. The second time you fail to complete a lap before the sound, your test is over. The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, start.

Like in the Original AvP where the Queen was in a harness until released, or in AvP the game (2010) when you played as Specimen 6 in the beginning? All my yes are belong to you.

I can't remember where I heard it, but I heard about a high risk high reward idea of taking one live. (Possibly to ship back to Wey-Yu) There would be a way to break free with the resist command and wreak havoc on the research team. If the humans manage to capture one live, however, they would get a massive boost to their research. In addition, this would double as a stun mine for combat purposes.

Unless this also stuns marines in the radius for an equal if not longer time I see this being used as a safer prox mine (EMP will do nothing to marines who lack mechanical parts except knock out their headsets for a tiny bit) rather than a high-risk tool to capture aliens.

Yes. Marines are more susceptible to it. Think of it like this, it's an electricity based pulse mine. The marines are covered in metal.

And getting trapped in a hive for 20+ minutes when there's no larva candidates isn't annoying to marines?

+1 to the idea, maybe it'll help get some interaction that isn't just SHOOT MAIM KILL to go along with having actual roleplay guidelines now. Science needs love, and I haven't seen any information at all on how it'll turn out; having live specimens to study can help. Plus, the live specimen would still have the hivemind connection (maybe? we could figure that out, maybe make it based on the same Z-level only) and could give the aliens intel in return.

A marine can break out and off themselves,an Alien can not, and will be STUCK for god knows how long.

Besides, capturing aliens do nothing for Research, just offer some weak RP chances with someone who MOST LIKELY doesn't want an alien on board. (AKA me)

Oh yeah, and what intel is the alien going to give? The room is white... yay....
Not like aliens can UNDERSTAND the humans.

A marine can break out and off themselves.

An Alien can not, and will be STUCK for god knows how long.
So I see you apparently haven't been playing in the last few weeks, with the flood of checkerboard hives and aliens babysitting marines to tie them back down within 3-5 ticks of getting loose... Current record I've got in the last week is a 27 minute wait before I ghosted myself, and the queen was sitting over me the entire time making sure I didn't get free. Alongside a few other marines.
Besides, capturing aliens do nothing for Research, just offer some weak RP chances with someone who MOST LIKELY doesn't want an alien on board. (AKA me)
And this can't be changed by any future updates? Like, say, making Research at ALL useful?

Yeah, we can make Research useful by adding some new tech that can relate and tie into the CM universe...

UNLESS at some point in the future we will be able to dissect aliens and do something with them, we really don't need to be taking them prisoner.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to fast track it y capturing one live? Let's say that you're studying deer. Would it be easier to learn how to track one from looking at a live deer or at a pile of bullet riddled limbs?

Perhaps instead of an emp grenade/mine which could potentially kill a couple of marines if it goes off at a certain point, how about a weapon the researcher could make after doing some jazzy research on a xenos body?

I think there are a few things to consider here both IC and OOC. IC the weapon/mine should be high-risk to the marine(s) using it. If it too safe and effective as a way to catch/stun a live xeno, marines are just gonna use it to rack up easy kills. One thing to consider here is that marines outside of the stun radius can still shoot guns while most xenos would have to move into the danger zone to push marines back. OOC if the stun weapon results in no escape possibility for the xeno then a lot of the times the xeno player is going to ghost (especially if the hivemind knows there are more hosts ready to burst).

IC, it shouldn't be used like, "Yo let's bring these in case we need to capture a badass alien!" These are made for electrocuting humans and they're very good at what they do. The Xeno stun lasts as long as the stun baton on a human lasts. It's easier on the Xeno than a standard land mine would be. As far as taking one alive, this would be the first step in implementing a capture system. The other systems would all have a way for the xeno to escape. Imagine the marines have captured a ravager. The science crew runs to the hangar to recieve the Xeno only to find out that it has broken free and slaughtered the marines on the shuttle. Again, high risk, high reward.
