Remember membranes?

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Make membranes act like grilles for alien ranged weapons.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
So no xeno ever uses membranes. They've got a shelf life of like two bullets, they let marines see inside when xenos dont need that cos heat vision. They also dont block light. They're a liability.

This would give them a niche.

Since they still only take 2 bullets to drop, it wouldn't do much to the balance, just give spitters a chance to slowly shuffle to cover when they get shot at rather than getting their asses kicked.

And lore/simulation wise, membranes in biology are usually semi-permeable - IE allow certain substances through and block others. Makes sense that a membrane would allow spit through.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):

As I've said. Alien spit weapons (boiler bombards and stuff too) pass through membranes - bullets and explosives do not.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

It's the same as how grilles and girders and barricades work, just for aliens.

+1 Looks like a good idea

Would it demage marines if touched? It could make sense if said that the membranes have poison or something like that.

Would be nice to have them have this niche or have them removed completely since they're a bit of a newbie trap at this point.

A grille that goes down after 2 bullets?

So, what, the boiler behind the membrane gets two bullets tanked by the membrane before it gets shot and killed?

The cost would need to be reduced, and/or the health of the membrane would need a buff in addition to this.

+1, reasons above. Very good idea, makes them actually useful. Maybe a health buff added to them would be nice too, but not needed, considering grilles (not egrilles) can be taken out pretty easily also.

I've seen membranes and I use to commonly use them when I first became an alien drone which was around those nostromo days. And I did use em when pre-alpha I thought they had something in them but nope BUT! THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING! A BIG FAT 1+ FOR ME!

Great idea, has a biological base to it even!
Making the membranes actually relevant should spice it up a bit in the nests, and increase the tactics needed from the aliens!

+1, allows fire from spitters/boilers, while also allowing more marine vision within the hive. Marines can grillespam, aliens can membrane spam. They've got essentially the same health (two slashes/spits for a grille, 2 bullets for a membrane) so seeing them fulfill the same purpose would be fine with me.

When you think of it, it serves the same purpose of a grille and those two bullets tanked can be VERY helpful. If you have ever been wrecked by a sniper as a boiler, you would see how good this is. Plus put two or three in a row, bam safety net.

wait i noticed a flaw in this

Grilles have to be targeted to get hit by Bullest/Acid

As in the Menbranes get hit if a bullets goes to that tile

These will be pointless in the front of the hive, but would come in handy for marine resin cells since it'd allow quick stunning of marines by sentinels. It'd give them some what of a use, and provide marines with a sight-line sometimes inside the hive.

I'm not too familiar with how easy it is to set-up new pass_flags, but it might not be too easy. Could probably re-purpose the old laser pass_flags though, since it doesn't seem like laser weaponry is actually used here anymore.

Either way, +1 since it's a pretty solid idea.

In terms of bullshit roleplay justification, maybe instead of a membrane that can sweep out of the way of flying spit maybe it's something like a half wall. It stops direct line of fire (bullets) but allows indirect fire (lobbed boiler acid, grenades, etc). Personally I'd also like the idea of a wall that aliens can see through but that marines can't. Personally I like to use membranes in nesting for a couple of reasons. First it lets incoming xenos with hosts know where a resin nest is so they aren't dragging them around forever looking for one. Second, it makes the hive more navigable (lets face it, resin mazes aren't really all that effective since marines just shoot the place up anyway). Third, there are some things you just can't see with heat vision such as tunnels, jelly, and unhatched eggs which membranes make it easier to locate. I'd love if the alien darkvision let them see straight through walls as well but I'm happy with whatever we/they get.
