Directional flashlights

Post by paradox1I7 » 11 Jan 2016, 07:29

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Directional flashlights, Light shines in the direction that your sprite or the light sprite is pointing, naturally leaving all other areas dark.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
I love the Colonial Marines Universe, fighting off Xenos that leap out of the dark picking you off one at a time, having directional Flashlights would create a new level of Immersion and Difficulty to the marine. (which is debatable whether or not the Marines need it to get harder for them)

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
This would naturally only be for flashlights and armor/weapon mounted lights, light would shine only in the direction that the marine is facing and maybe one or two tiles in other directions would be dimly lit.
Flares would still work the same and this would also bring a breath of fresh air back to the flare making it a more popular choice among marines. In saying that would this make Flares OP in a way, yes more than likely so my on the spot counter to this would be to make the lifespan of a flare much shorter so it becomes more of a valuable resource

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
create new code for flashlights and other light sources to be only directional

I really really like this idea, it might create some interesting RP and perhaps discourage Marines from solo-ing everything. +1

Don't quote me on this, but I'm afraid it cannot be done for a slew of technical reasons.

Oh, look, this thread again! People, we suggested this, kinda, dozen times and all suggestions were denied due implementing difficulty/impossibility. It could be really cool but it ain't gonna happen.

This thread is suggested every month and still can't be done effectively within the engine.

It may not be able to be done with our codebase, but it absolutely can be done in the byond engine.

Eh, fair enough. It'd require a massive lighting system rework, though.

This should be something when suggestions get closed once they finish, hopefully, a necessary suggestion they should put out the ones that are hard to implement that need reworking.

It's possible with byond 510, but denied for now. We'll revisit this when we can.
