Ejected SM core catcher

Post by ZDashe » 19 Jan 2016, 23:40

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
When a SM is going critical, it is normal for players to eject the core. However, due to the emptiness of space and objects traversing Z-levels at the edges, the ejected SM core will drift and end up in unpredictable places. I propose to stop the ejected core from drifting away from the same Z-level as its origin (Upper Deck Sulaco).

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
1. Eliminate unexpected and unwarranted damage on a separate unrelated Z-level.
2. Makes recovery of SM core possible, if it was panic ejected or an accident, instead of ordering a new one.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
This means that if SM has gone critical as a result of an incompetent CE or MT, ejecting the core would definitely be a safe option. Currently, this is not 100% safe.

Unexpected lower deck explosion:

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
There is sufficient space to the Aft of Sulaco's ejection port. Perhaps add a small rock or asteroid block directly in the path of the ejected SM core, so it prevents it from traversing to another Z-level. However, the SM explosion radius has to be taken into account, so if the SM explodes, the damage is still out of range of Sulaco.

There's actually a specific z-level created with asteroids to catch the supermatter. Unfortunately it doesn't always work.

Yea, I seen that z-level before, now i know what's its purpose. I guess then this thread would be better suited under bugs then..

I kinda enjoy that the SM gets tossed random places. It gives a bit more incentive for engineering to actually stabilize it if at all possible.

-1 Engineers that are incompetent and don't know how to handle the SM need the risk involved with ejecting it

If you're worried about where it's gonna end up when it's ejected - don't eject it

Honestly I have never understood people's problems with the SM. It is probably the easiest of all of the engines to save if things go south. All it takes is thinking and a little bit of manual work. I once lost control of the SM (granted, on another server) until it got to something like 92 percent delaminated, but then regained control and defused the situation.

I would agree that people should be wary the of the risk in ejecting it.

Actually the reason I made this suggestion was due to SM grief (That screenshot). Regardless, I agree that incompetent people deserve to have the SM blown up in their faces =P

Wait didn't you say the lower deck explosion was from when the SM came back through z levels? In either situation, dumb people should operate SM

That round had a team of griefers (All banned). Engineering got griefed. SM was ejected. Drifted to lower deck z-level. Exploded. Marines got rekted even harder on lower decks 4noraisins as a result of the grief (no cloning, comms out, hangar got atmos warning).

Yeah, I think it be a bit blocking if there is a confirmation box, like launching a nuke. Which I have to remind in Suggestion soon.
ALPHA, BETA, OMEGA, GAMMA, SIGMA.

Never.

We do have some obstacles, but I'm not making a specific box. You eject the core, you take the risk.
