Spit shouldn't be homing

Post by qsleepy » 25 Jan 2016, 01:48

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
I've noticed if they click you with a spit, it will follow you for great lengths across the screen going diagonal.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
It should be like pouncing.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
I just notice a lot of aliums spamming it on downed marines to crit them. It should fly like a bullet, not a heat-seeking goop pile.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

Make it not heat seeking.

Erm. It doesn't actually follow you. Spit's pathing is laser pathing I believe. Which is why it goes diagonal like it does.

Hm it just seems to be homing so if I am above an area and move it will go to where I was then follow my mob onto the next square. I do avoid them, I just figured if it hit within one square around you it just honed in or something. Just seemed funky. Like your signature laser dealio, btw. super sweet. Watched it play like 10 times haha.

It isn't homing and the way how the current system works for shooting/spitting something seems like it is homing but it isn't.

I don't like cute things.

Good hunting.

The reason it looks like it's homing is because there are only 4 possible sprites for most given projectiles, that point N E S W, there's no way for the current sprites to point NNE, or WSW, etc. afaik

the sprites can point diagonally, but it will only take effect when the spit travels diagonally and only for that tile transition (so you get an effect where it 'wobbles' when going across any path besides a straight diagonal or cardinal line)

it might be an interesting experiment to set up spit so that it doesn't automatically change dir when moving, and instead have it set its dir on launch with a simple get_dir() check against the usr and target (or, if restricting dir changes is 2hard, use a number of separate sprites that correspond to each of the 8 possible directions - but that's a bit messy)
