Consider This: Discord vs. Skype
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
There is something better to use than Skype: Discord. Discord combines all the benefits of Skype (such as push notifications) and TeamSpeak (voice chat channels). Plus, you can configure channels that have certain securities and the number one bonus: you don't need to pay to host a server or have unlimited slots; it's all free.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
I believe there will be more communication all around and it will be a faster way to let the community know what's going on. Not everyone is required to have a mic(if not staff) and everything is in one place.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
When set up, there would be options to have channels separate from each other like on TeamSpeak while still retaining the benefits of push notifications like on Skype. Plus, there is also tagging and direct messaging so if you need to keep something private, then it's private. In addition, you do not have to download discord; you can also use the web browser version. In hashtag channels, you can also post "GIFs [which] only play when you mouse over them, so your CPU is spared. Post those GIFs." Comparisons between communication platforms are also detailed on Discord's main website: https://discordapp.com/
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

Re: Consider This: Discord vs. Skype
I'd say we've used Skype for far too long to suddenly switch, but honestly, all the experiences I had with Discord were positive.
I, for one, would be willing to give it a try.

Also,
lolno, from what I can see. For instance, your IP is literally up for grabs on Skype. Discord, afaik, goes through a step or two to encrypt your shit. Also I tried, and the quality is ages better. Shows that it was built in 2015(?).Lostmixup wrote:snip

+1 Hey, if the staff don't use it, the community sure as hell will. I'm quite new to the discord thing, but it's easy enough and seems a lot better than Skype, in my humble opinion.
Fun to be had, time to be glad.

I've used discord, mumble, Skype and teamspeak extensively. I know what I'm talking about when I say that Discord is legit the best option.
It's better for the community and there's multiple voice and chat channels.
Plus one.

Cough people saying they meta comm now cough.
Apop toyed with the idea of getting a TS server think it is his call overall if the game gets a voice set up. Although he already said that it can't be used for CM.

+1
Everything explained in the post above + possibility to voice chat.
Thing hidden below demonstrates my opinion of this suggestion further.

according to apop, the reason we (he) won't use discord is explicitly because the chat is unencrypted.Jackserious wrote:I'd say we've used Skype for far too long to suddenly switch, but honestly, all the experiences I had with Discord were positive.

From what I understand (and devs themselves have stated), en-route messages are encrypted with TLS.Lostmixup wrote: according to apop, the reason we (he) won't use discord is explicitly because the chat is unencrypted.
The chat itself isn't encrypted because otherwise offline users couldn't see the previous messages without a bit of work.
I find discussions of security on Skype quite funny, though, given you can quite literally look up somebody's IP from their username.

That's only if you have a specific setting on I think.Jackserious wrote: From what I understand (and devs themselves have stated), en-route messages are encrypted with TLS.

+1, We can move the Circlejerk to a private channel over there, I guess, and also staff would be supra-encrypted and safe in their comfy chairs at home.

The issue is that, I don't want to "encourage" meta and such, and I feel a Discord or things like that might. But if the population wants it, I can look into it.

PERSOANLLY, I think teamspeak is better, but the point about it being free easily makes the difference

Re: Consider This: Discord vs. Skype
I've seen it work; you can enforce no meta by stating a rule that says "no IC in an OOC Voice Channel". If they don't listen, then use them as an example for a voice chat ban. It will shut everyone up and they won't meta. Plus, community members will work together to enforce a "no meta" rule because they themselves don't want to get in trouble. Thank you for considering this suggestion, Apophis.apophis775 wrote:The issue is that, I don't want to "encourage" meta and such, and I feel a Discord or things like that might. I just wanted a place where we could hang out all-together real-time while at the same time see the main goings-on in the community and share funny memes and gifs.

Re: Consider This: Discord vs. Skype
Staff moving to discord is plausible, but a community discord is highly unlikely purely because voice chat is way too hard to monitor. Most of our staff don't actually like talking for some reason or another (not me though) so they wouldn't even be in the voice channel most of the time meaning it would be unmonitored. People could tell us when someone's being meta in the chat, but I'd rather not have a second thing I have to watch.

Re: Consider This: Discord vs. Skype
Here's the thing though: using these communication platforms has a choice. That choice is whether or not to open it to the community. You can test the waters, check for meta, and anything that comes up as a full-scale meta collaboration will come to the immediate shutdown of the availability of the platform. The threat of this would cause self-policing; the community, as a whole, would not want to lose the privilege of hanging out with each other in real-time so they themselves would control the situation without you having to step in and babysitting. Instead, the only time you would step in is to ban that one person who the rest of the people say won't shut up about IC. Opening a text and voice chat platform to the community is a privilege that the community itself must earn, with the permission of Apop.Lostmixup wrote:Staff moving to discord is plausible, but a community discord is highly unlikely purely because voice chat is way too hard to monitor. To the community: if you want this to happen, speak out on this post! If you all want real-time text and voice chat, then support that you won't meta!

There's absolutely nothing stopping you guys from starting your own discord if that's the case. We already have groups in CM that use Skype for the same purpose (that I and others are in). It just won't be "official."matchafrappe wrote: Here's the thing though: using these communication platforms has a choice. That choice is whether or not to open it to the community. Re: Consider This: Discord vs. Skype
It would be better if it were official so that it can promote a togetherness in the community. Separate groups are separate; it doesn't always mean the whole community.Lostmixup wrote:There's absolutely nothing stopping you guys from starting your own discord if that's the case.
