Static Inside the Caves

Post by Fitchace » 14 Mar 2016, 10:25

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): When a marines get to a certain depth inside the caves, all radio signals received outside the designated cave area will have some static element.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): Immersion and that feeling of distance and depth while entering the dangerous caves.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): The orbital can only be activated and fired until a certain cave depth is entered. This would be the same for marine who would receive radio static from outside the set cave distance.
Examples would be a group of marines entered the caves. They would be able to clearly communicate with each other on their radios since they are all in the same cave area, however all outside cave radio communication would have ***** along with some broken up words to act as static. Example static (We *ot ***tac* in he** s**d bac* up **** N**) Without static (We got contact in here send back up right NOW). So it would be kinda like hearing the aliens speaking in local chat but less stars on the words to give more of a chance of understanding the message. Also all incoming messages from outside the caves to inside the caves will also receive that static bonus.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): I have no idea.

Even though aliens always get 100% communication with their queen via hivemind, and marines don't really need a nerf, I would like something like this for immersion.

It should work two ways, y'know in some horror movies where you hear broken up cries for backup and gunfire? Would scare the shit out of people outside the caves.

Despite being a disgustingly pro-Marine player, I gotta say I would like this, for immersions.

Sure, have my +1.

I play both sides but mainly marine, just unoften now but the horror of losing contact with command or anyone outside of the caves would be killer.

+1.

I love it. Could really add more horror, and it would prevent some issues, mainly a scouting mission turning into lol charge of marines

This would be a pain to code in, but if the admins want it, it would be a good addition.

Hmm... Being on the receiving end of LOLMARINECHARGE a fuckton, I would have to give this a +1 because... Scouting party of two marines or Ramborine giving EVERYTHING away from deep within caves. As far as I know the caves are meant to be deep as FUCK underground hence why you can't OB in there.

I think this shouldn't affect SL, because he has much better (well, actually, bigger, but I think it is the same :P) radio as we can see on sprites.

+1. This is an amazing idea, marines trying to communicate but alas, they cant even get through this thick rock of a mountain. Code wise, how would it be implemented though? Cant be too much of a restructuring due to communication code being wonky from what i hear. The code does have to activate when marines pass a tile area to symbolize they are entering caves, and that the comms must be disabled all the way through the mountain.

Things to look at in the future: maybe the limit for marine communication only extends to the general communication channel; special communication channels ( squad, command) still are operational.

I disagree with this.

Marine Command suffers from a problem of lack of communication, further cutting it off would be a bad thing.

Also you would be forgiving for even thinking the cave network is actually a giant cave, since its just as pitch dark in the colony as it is in the caves.

I think disabling the general comms would be a good addition. If total comms black out isnt an option, maybe having communication be scrambled might be a better resolution. (H*llo, *r* you r*ci*vin* *e.) The scramble would only be applicable to the general comms chat due to comms frequency.

I'm with Steelpoint on this one. It's already difficult enough for command and SLs to communicate and get squads to actually follow orders whenever they have comms.

On top of this I can't help but feel that this would make an already difficult task (assaulting the hive) a nigh impossible one.

I don't think marines need any nerfs right now.

This is my main issue with this suggestion, it would majorly fuck up command when marines entered the caves considering that with this suggestion in place marine comms are going to be difficult to read when they enter the caves and generally the only time marines enter the caves is either scouting or assaulting and with both your Bo needs to be on the ball at both times to make sure they can order the squad to a location where they are needed, which would become rather difficult if the comms are all garbled.

I mean, I understand as to why it would be nice to have but I just don't think that currently we need this.
