People seem to underestimate the damage an infected marine can do. Want to know why Xenos use the checkerboard nests? Why they'll sit and watch you like a hawk until the larva bursts out?

Because chances are, they've seen what happens when the marines aren't watched, when they aren't put into secure nests. If one marine gets out and frees their pals, you now have a handful of nest-immune, hugger-immune marines. A large part of xeno gameplay revolves around huggers and the stuns they provide. Countless suggestions to improve Xenos have been shot down because "well Xenos have huggers tho, 2op, pls nerf". Well, huggers are useless when it comes to marines who are already infected.

So the xeno players learned from past mistakes, they make sure the captured marines STAY captured, because to do otherwise might result in their deaths and possibly even the destruction of the hive.

And honestly, babysitting captured marines is normally really fucking boring. But it's a necessity because you have no way of knowing if they've packed another gun, knife, or grenade. I've seen marines completely fill their bag with pistols and knives, if they're not watched they WILL get out and fuck the hive up.

If an apex predator watching over it's highly aggressive prey as they tuck them into their nests is metagaming, then yes, I suppose we're jus going to have to bite that bullet.
You may bitch about xenos sitting on you making sure you don't flee, but remember that this means they have to devote a number of their forces to stay at home, not out there hunting more prey. You might even call it a trade-off.

Maybe I'm biased, but it seems like the predators have you beaten for apex predator. They also have no reason to assume the marines are hostile after being nested, because how many non-marine hosts attempt escape?

Xenos already know about humans. They've had to fight armed humans, they've had to fight the security team on the colony (which had lethal weaponry), you're telling me that not ONE SINGLE PERSON ON THE COLONY tried to resist? Also, this little gem.

"Man. This person is really fighting us. They've even killed some of our kind.......... Eh. I should just leave them. They're probably harmless now."

Said no intelligent predator, ever.

You seriously want to make it a rule for aliens to be "Dumb" and not guard their hosts, this is just really bad of a suggestion.

you know, maybe he's trying to not remove babysitting as a whole, but to restrict using checkerboards and other tactics people consider being bullshit.
for that, there'd need to be an another thing that will probably be taken as a marine nerf - inability to escape from the nest by yourself.
least that's what I think of.

I'd be for restricting the use of checker boarding, or at least requiring doors to be attached to walls on at least two sides or they collapse from lack of structural integrity or something. It's only logical. I think we're heading in the right direction now.

Also, from what I've seen, the colonists just lay there and take it when you give it to them.

"there'd need to be an another thing that will probably be taken as a marine nerf" Why would you nerf marines because of a mechanic that's borderline abused by aliens?

1) Checkerboards are a legitimate nest design, this was already settled, it likely won't be changed in the future. And getting rid of them will just cause the xenos to make even more annoying nest designs. Trust me, they exist.

2) The colony didn't just have one to three survivors. It USED to be a fully staffed colony with a chaplain, doctors, researchers, miners, security, a chef, barkeep, other civilian staff such as custodial and maintenance and cargo crew. Are you really suggesting that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM --Including the security team, who was actually lethally armed-- just decided to "lay there and take it"..?

3) If you ban the simple act of "Guarding hosts" by xenos, there needs to be a counterplay to balance it out, such as "Remove the necessity that hosts be guarded in the first place".

1) Trust me, any change in this area is welcome. Like I said, structural integrity and whatnot. You can't have a bunch of doors attached to nothing still serving a purpose.

2) All of whom are waiting conveniently on the ground for you to infect and drag away, for game play purposes albeit.

3) I've not suggested banning the actual act of guarding the hosts, but rather making it take some actual investment.

1) Either way, the issue of checkerboards has already been settled. Water under the bridge.

2) The only 'survivors' who are literally just lying on the ground, unmoving, are actually dead NPC's unless that was ever changed. Canon-wise, the xenos have been on the colony for... days, if not weeks. They've taken every single member of the colony except for those already dead, and the currently living player-controlled 'Survivors'. Everyone else is either dead or captured already.

3) It already does. It's a time investment. You have to spend sometimes twenty minutes, standing in one spot, watching the screen for when a marine breaks out. It's boring as fuck for both the marine and the xeno.

1) It's never too late to bring to attention that a feature needs to be updated or modified. If there's a big enough demand for it, it'll be done. Nothing is final, ever.

2) Whatever I said to start this second string here has lost relevance at this point, since someone has actually suggested a solution, we should focus on that.

3) It's boring, work toward a solution that makes it more engaging. Otherwise, you're just perpetuating the use of a strategy neither side enjoys. It's rather asinine.
