Remove monkeysitting.

Post by Admiralkio » 17 Apr 2016, 09:32

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Ban 'monkeysitting'

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): Prevent aliens from ensuring that marines have zero chance at escape, reduce redtext spam.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): Removes a serious annoyance to captured marines and makes play more fair.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Edit the rules page.

Monkeysitting:
Obsessively standing over a downed and infected marine, spam-tackling and watching them so that you may tackle them the moment they stand up.

Instead of ban, Why not change it to only sentinel caste? as that is what they are for as well as guarding the hive. Being monkeysittied by that one hunter who is for getting hosts is very annoying. I wouldn't mind making it so that only sentinel caste and queen could do this? (by sentinel caste I mean the spitter/prae and spitter as well)

Banning it entirely seems nonsensical. I mean, it would mean getting new aliens a lot more difficult, if not impossible. Unless you mean the ayys always being in the vicinity ( like, one or two tiles away ) of the host and tackling it as soon as it escapes from the nest, then putting him/her back in. Still, isn't that kind-of the point of guarding the hosts? So they don't escape and get a baby ayy out of their chests?

I could go with only sentinel caste (and it's evolved forms) being guards, plus Queen.
I don't know, I have mixed feelings on this.

On one hand as a marine, I hate this happening. On the otherhand. I need to be sat on. Cause if you don't sit on me I'm going to rip your hive apart. HONESTLY -1 It's annoying, but there are some of us out there that are so liberal with explosives that it's a needed precaution.

If I was going to suggest anything it would be that you can't babysit a marine until you know they're all about dat tastey freedom...once one marine does it you're free game to babysit. Kinda like marines not knowing about bursters.

More fair? You had your chance before you got captured. Once in the nest, your theirs until you pop. There is no escape. Unless the aliens are few in number or not doing their job right

It would be preferable if we aren't suppose to escape to make nests unescapable rather than escapable, because if we are not meant to escape, we should not be able to break out, right?

I've escaped the hive before, and even killed one or two before in the process. GRANTED it doesn't happen often. The one time a managed was in B18 armor with a mag harnessed M4a1. I ended up bursting on an operating table later mind you but... Point being I agree it should be hard/impossible to get out if the aliens are playing well. Hence why I -1

A tremendous hassle to enforce and it would result in constant problems for the Xenos.
When monkeysitting, a marine is capable of breaking out of the restraints 3-5 times before he bursts (if he begins resisting the second after he has been restrained in a nest each time). This means that if left unobserved a marine escape is a guarantee. Maybe they won't get all the way out of the hive, but they would probably be able to free any other trapped comrade in the area and cause considerable damage to the hive in the proccess (destroying eggs, killing larva, etc.)
In the instances where a marine has gotten free in the central hive due to lack of any xenos watching over the captives they are often able to do incredible damage to the hive from within. They can no longer be stunned with facehuggers and getting them safely back to the nest, when there are many of them is a chore and a half. These cases have even turned the tides of battle, as every able bodies xeno is recalled to contain the outbreak.

I think that the reason you can resist being nested is so that you can have your "last laugh" as a marine. You're pretty much screwed, and the need to spawn more aliens keeps you that way. However, you can pull out your knife and go to town on that Sentinel standing over there for a few seconds before you get re-nested, just let them know that you still mean business. The ability to escape, possibly to kill yourself, or to go on a larva-stomping rampage throughout the hive, is just an added bonus if you're lucky enough to have your captors not be paying attention to you.

I'm all for removing host camping by removing breaking out entirely. But there would need to be a lot of other balance changes for that to work right. So as it is right now, this mechanic works alright.

Edit: Actually read the thing this time. Aliens are trying to hatch you, not give you a fighting chance. Banning people for playing the role properly is silly.

Well fine. Guess I'll just stand for the rest of my life...

But in all seriousness, this isn't really feasible at the moment. There'll be too many cases and too many gray areas for our mods to enforce.

I once fought a ravager with a combat knife in order to survive. I also had an incident where I killed a hunter, four infected marines and then myself. Fuck aliens, man. I'd be for supporting decreasing the amount of time required to break out of the nest though.

And you're allowed to do so. Aliens are trying to prevent you having the chance to get free.

We monkeys it, because one marine alone can cause chaos in a hive, since huggers have no effect, and they can free others.
