Marine Motion Tracker

Post by Sailor Dave » 04 Jan 2015, 02:36

Hey, hi. For anyone who gives a dang, I was one of the coders for the last iteration of Colonial Marines. I guess this is probably the right place to put this. I spent a few days working on a motion detector because why not. Here's a gif showing it off.

If you're too lazy to click a link, here is another gif.
Image

Pretty simple. The green blip in the center is you, the white blips are dudes moving around. If you don't move, or if you move carefully and slowly, you don't get pinged. I can adjust this if I have to. Marine armor has IFF(Identification Friend Foe) tags, so anyone wearing it doesn't get pinged. There are ~authentic~ pinging noises that can be turned off.

Currently it's just the little handheld device that you see near the bottom of the gif, the green/white circle. I am not much of a spriter, so that's just a placeholder. The tracker HAS to be held in your hand or it will shut itself off. Can't look at a motion detector in your pocket, now can you? This means that it can't be used with two-handed guns. I may see if I can make it able to be hooked up to guns like the flashlights.

I also considered making it battery chargeable, both to cut down on the potential performance drain and to make it less OP or whatever. I don't know if it would be, but who knows. Ideally there would probably be one tracker per squad. Maybe the engineer can lug it around.

The performance is okay. I had a little trouble with it, the main hog being the IFF, but I'm not sure how well it will profile on the actual server.

I'm tired and it is late so I will be leaving this here for the night.

I should probably mention that this is also just one dmi file, 111 lines, and a couple of icon files. It doesn't touch anything else, so it's just drag and drop, no hassle.

Wow. This is incredible. Huge bonus points for the gif you made, too.

Even as a consistent alien player, I would love to see something like this in-game.

Does it make the same beep sounds as in the movies?

Yep. Not the inactive ticking sound, but I could easily add that in. The beeping is definitely there, though.

The range is currently 7 tiles, the current view radius. The "distance", the pixel offset between the blips, can also be made farther or closer. This can also easily be adjusted. I wasn't really sure how big to make it.

I should also point out that it CAN detect all nearby mobs, even though the gif only shows one at a time. I could only move one person at a time, after all. Just in case anyone wonders.

.....Is this.. Heaven? Add this, add it now.

But... If you think about it carefully. We have tons of Rambo marines, and they'll likely to chase down Aliens no matter what the consequences are.

If you do, make sure you don't have it included with the DME.

I need to test and check the code first.

The pull request is up. Do you have a skype or something that we can use to go over it?

I think someone made a tracker device icon a while ago. The thread might have been wiped with the rollback though, because I can't seem to find it.st

Either way, absolutely astounding work.

Damn mate, amazing work. Can't wait to get my hands on this, especially as a squad lead.

Question with this probably geared towards developers:
If this is implemented will marines who have donated items such as my marine vest w/ammo, show up on the tracker due to not being technically the new gen marine armor?

I think he means about the armor not being the standard next gen.

1-First armors since i was in were regular vests. -> Unused.

2- Then we got the Cool striped vests. -> LOs Keep using them.

3- The last gen was the padded bigger armor with the new skin for helmet. -> Custom objects are modification of this.

4-And this gen is the same but with the chip that make marines invisible in the tracker. Only and only if you wear this you are invisible to the tracker.

And he means custom objects, that are modified armors from the 3rd Generation, without cloaker for the tracker.

If you have a custom armor you are supossed to appear in the tracker, since you don have the chip on.

And again, because no one seems to noticed my request, "Tick" Noise passive please? It adds lots of pressure to the situation, because it could, at any moment turn into an active tick, that's bad for you as marine.

This is a great icon, I'll add it in.

I'm not sure what you mean by a close button. You can turn it off the same way you turn it on, if that's what you mean.

I'm still figuring out how I want to handle that. I can add the sound easily enough, but I don't want it to annoy anyone who doesn't want to hear it if the person who's holding it doesn't want to disable the sound. Adding a preference toggle seems a bit excessive. The regular ping sound isn't so bad because it only happens when you NEED it to happen, i.e. when it detects movement.
