Night Vision Binoculars

Post by Ikmalmn » 10 May 2016, 06:41

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Allow the binoculars to have night vision traits.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): This will allow for SL's to scout the area and get a better "feel" of the changing battlefield. Thus be able to better manage their squad for both defense and offense

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): As we all know, the binocular is very much a semi useful item that gives extra vision to the player. Useful, but in the pitch black darkness...you guess it! Absolute waste of a useful storage slot.

To counteract this, I suggest we make it able to see through darkness so that it's one major disadvantage (That being it can't see through darkness) is nulified.

Also, one thing to point out is the fact that a futuristic military has not whatsoever able to achieve the technology to make night vision binoculars. When somehow, in today's world, we kinda have achieved it

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): I think it should be possible to give it traits from a Meson Scanner and have it be able to see through darkness

Just wear mesons while using the binoculars.

Still...it wouldn't let you see through darkness and locate the enemy.

I mean...you do know how a Mason Scanner work right...

Locating the enemy is a big no-no, as stated in the other night vision thread.

Actually I think (note I'm a person who blasted the other NV thread) this would be acceptable maybe. The issue with the other thread was the NV goggles was they were too useful and take away the shroud of darkness the xenos need but binos at best will provide support since the Sl would have describe the location of the xeno and by the time that occurs they probably moved, so its be basically a tool that gives you rough number of enemies on the field in a direction of course it can't see though walls so there is still some LOS issues that will come with walls which is nice

So 0 I'm neutral on this, just want to see how everyone else see this

The way I see balancing them would make them medium size so they can't fit in bags and only provide them to SLs. If you are wondering why medium size, well like in the last thread I said that Gen 1 NV was rather bulky and if they weren't bigger why ever use the normal binos?

Alternately you could have it require a battery as well so in theory it cant just be spammed?
Just a mini idea anywho.

huh using powercells, that is actually a good idea but I think maybe having both put in, since being able to see into darkness and pretty far is a major advantage for marines, so it should also have disadvantage to using/having it in favor of other objects like an additional firearm

As far as I know, there is only 4 in the whole game and cannot be ordered by the RO. So it's quite "balanced" to begin with.

I wouldn't mind this, actually, but I can see a few issues. So undecided.

+1. Gives a good reason to bring the binoculars along for the ride as a squad leader and its an active hand item which reduces how well you can fight while using it.

+1. It'll make SLs more capable of directing their squads properly, if they know what they're doing.

Knowledge is king and having better situational awearness as a leader is vital, just giving SLs a pair of NV goggles would not only make the role more attractive but give the SL more information on what's going on.

I think it may be a viable idea.

Best to make it run on battery power AND significantly expensive if ordered through the RO.

-1 unless there are some major downsides.

Xenos can't pull flares or flashlights anymore, making it difficult to counter marine lightsources. Xenos also need the benefit of darkness to coordinate attacks, which will not work if marines have cheap night vision to see where they're coming from.

I don't see any issues with this, its a temporary item anyway, you won't keep using it forever, i think it would be a good use to see the other side of the river, i'll stick with a +1 for now

Just so people know, the binoculars are considered a limited item and cannot be ordered through cargo. They are only available to squad leaders from the vendor and maybe? specialists. There can only be 4-8 on a map at any one time and they take up an item slot.

Four SLs with such binoculars wont be able to shift balance. Idea about binoculars working on cells interesting as well. +1

You can't shoot while using binoculars, and if 'rines are coordinated enough to call out target squares to guys with guns on the fly, let em have it.
