Allow Medics To Preform Surgery In Critical Emergency

Post by Steelpoint » 18 Jun 2016, 13:20

Summary: Allow Combat Medics to be able to preform minor surgery (anything outside of larva removal) in a critical emergency situation.

I define 'critical emergency' as there are no living Doctors on board the Sulaco to preform the operation. Either if no Doctors spawned on the shift, or all the Doctors have been killed in action.

However make it that anyone who is not a round start Doctor who is preforming surgery will have a significantly increased chance of failing at each step even with the right tools.

Benefits: This would make having all Doctors dead or MIA be not as crippling. However it would still be discouraged if any non-doctors would fails at a very high rate.

----

This is just a personal observation from a round where we had no MD's on shift but a few Combat Medics. Its very rare but it can happen and I feel allowing Medics some flexibility would be a boon.

Technically, the rules are worded in such a way it's supposedly already like that. Except it... kinda isn't.
I support bone/shrapnel extraction surgery for medics.

The rules currently say, and I quote.

"You may NOT perform ANY surgery (no matter how minor)."

That's a recent change. It used to say "you can do basic surgery if there's literally no other option and they're about to die."

Would be nice to have it,as you said before Steelpoint, that any non-doctor has a high fail rate.

But I'm unsure on how the devs will implement that.

Use the 'knownledge section' to do so.
That way you can put 'surgery' for doctors, 'minor surgery' for medics and research (Potentially) and all that stuff.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

I mean if you want to get technically you can make two arguments that both Combat Medics would have a better knowledge of human anatomy than some grunt but also that the surgical computers are detailing instructions on what to do.

At the end of the day I would like to at least throw a bone to Combat Medics for those one in a thousand cases.

As I was trained as a combat medic, I can tell you we are trained to do invasive procedures involving the airway and internal bleeding. So the internal bleeding and internal organs surgery could apply to a medic's skill set. Medic's are trained to treat life threatening airway, bleeding, and circulation problems to keep them alive so that doctors can fully treat them later on.

So, combat medics wouldn't necessarily know how to do shrapnel removal or (in this time line, given what we know in our current timeline) limb reattachment or such? We know the combat medics are able to operate the cloners if there is literally no one else available.

Personally, i would like to see that idea of medics being able to perform surgeries or cloning procedures under the guise of medical knowledge: minor. This puts them at a large disadvantage compared to doctors, and with moderate chances of failing in the best scenario (well equipped tools aboard the SULACO doing one small surgery) and massive chance of failing in a poor scenario( in the middle of a battlezone, almost no tools, multiple surgeries needed)
Gaze upon me,
for I have wandered deep into the ancient tombs of knowledge to which lie madness and sorrow, cleansing a path for all those who walk behind me...

...

But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!

This is going to happen once the med system is updated and squad medics will have some opportunity to do field surgery. In the process.
