Well I mean, smartgunners have NVG and they aren't that good
EDIT: I meant that they don't go around and Rambo "sniper elite" even with NVG so NVG is still viable for the sniper
Smartgun is bae, I always chose it, should have worded better

What are you talking about? They're the biggest threat to hunters; runners; and ravagers since they can freely fire without having to worry about accidentally shooting their allies and with a barrel charger they can bring the pain. The NVG also allows them to see xenos that think they're being sneaky. Along with being coupled with the fact that they're the easiest spec weapon.
Your point also doesn't make sense since the smartgun and the sniper are two very different weapons. The sniper relies on visibility since it's meant to be used at long range, quite frequently said visibility is nil meaning the sniper cannot even be used. This coupled with the fact that it has FF and how slow its fire rate is and tadah, a very situational weapon. If it had night vision it'd be a true terror weapon, with xenos that engage marines and then run off at low health thinking they're safe before getting their head blown off, forcing xenos to start moving far back into cover instead of just sitting over weeds in the dark.

This place would be so much better if marines were replaced with cyborgs, atleast those would follow orders. assuming there was a rule forcing them to do so...

They don't have night vision, that's a thermal outlining system that shouldn't even be able to outline the xenos.
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

In game it's NVG and mesons. That's why they always forget to turn on their lights, because they don't need light
I've tested it and they can see all the tiles on screen as with mesons, and one tile shorter they can see anything that should be in the dark, so it's NVG

So, my extra thinking on this is, why not have two modes for the sniper rifle?
Nightvision mode and infared FF target evasion mode.
The user selects one or the other by installing a scope kit. This gives the sniper rifle some nice choice when using it. You can either treat it as a suped up designated marksman rifle or as a long range night stalker.
-Inside the m42 crate is two scopes; Infared FF scope, and Night Vision scope.
- first scope acts like the current sniper rifle, no night vision but avoids friendly fire
- second scope acts like night vision, but can hit friendlies
Changing scopes requires a sniper to field strip his weapon and pop on a different scope ( and his bipod, and his stock), which i think would be a good balancing point. not only taking time, but also taking an extra slot space (possibly only a backpack can carry the medium sized scope). No need for fancy extra mechanics or special coding.

Eh, its a fairly decent idea. and to change scopes you dont need to field strip, old scope automatically pops out to hand

What if the recon got the NVG scope and marksman got the anti-FF scope?

Yah, that sounds like a great idea.
It would also give a difference to why people go recon vs. marksman

aint a bad idea allright. snipers take most blame if they FF despite other marines doing more, and without flares, sniper is fairly useless, except vs those glowing gassy fuckers

+1. As alpha SPC awhile ago we had power duty, and I ended up sitting outside firing into the darkness because I had nothing better to do. I ended up seeing a boiler, and I fired only to realize their was dark cover infront of it. By the time they were close enough for me to shoot reliably, the snipers falloff/cant shoot at point blank nerf kicked in, and I couldn't hit shit, so I pulled my pistol out and fired only to get gassed.

+1 though if we need to reach a compromise, give the NV scope a slightly shorter range than the regular scope.

+1, as things currently stand snipers are hardly better than any boot with a scope. NVG would set them a cut above. they are already rare and constrained enough that i dont think this buff would upset the preshussss balance

It would. In fact, PMCs would be a pain to deal with a lot more.

If Snipers had some form of Night Vision it would massively elevate the role to be roughly on equal with a SADAR or Smartgun. It will lack the raw power of those two roles, but it'll compensate by having fantastic visibility and recon ability.
This is war, survival is your responsibility.

If balance is an issue, how about a thermal scope instead? Here's the twist, it tells you where a target is in the dark, similar to how the aliens see, but line of sight is required. And unless they are illuminated, the target is unknown (similar to the predators cloaked silhouette, but brighter). Although this will likely be pointless late game, this could cause a lot of doubt early to mid game, because a sniper could never be 100% sure if their target is hostile or not. That unknown heat signature in the darkness could be an Alien, but what if it's a panicking colonist or a retreating marine that escaped capture/squad wipe?

I'm liking these compromises! As of now, I'm more scared of accurate burst AP shots where all three shots hit. A scope on a pulse rifle shouldn't be the better choice!

On big red snipers are pretty much pointless as marines can easily loot scoped battle rifles from research. This will actually make them worth taking over smartgunner/SADAR.

It means the sniper becomes a much more viable choice. Gives it some information power compared to the raw power of the SADAR or smartgun and the ability to properly finish xenos.

+1 I've never chosen the sniper due to the fact that I can't see shit between my target, or the target itself really unless it is a boiler or in light.
I main xeno.

We still need this.
As I've said: To differentiate between marksman and recon, give the marksman a night vision scope, allowing it to see only when zoomed it. And give recon night vision goggles since recon is used as frontline fire support.
George S.Patton once said:No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making some other poor dumb bastard die for his country.
I don't like cute things.
Good hunting.

I definitely agree with this especially now that at least one of the SPC's will have to have a sniper, we're ganna start wanting the ability to see off into the distance with a NV Scope, because Mesons do nothing.
