Reduce rule breaking names
Bad names are one of the most common broken rules that staff have to deal with. As a mod, I find it odd that I can't change mob names, and need an admin to do it for me. There is also a cool idea I've seen on Yogstation that would reduce the number of names like this that exist at all.
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Give mods the ability to change mob names, so that we can fix pop culture and otherwise shitty names without having to rouse Feweh from his slumber. Also use the random name generator to add a random last name onto any one word name entered into the character creator. I've seen this feature on Yog and think it would significantly reduce the number of rule breaking names found on the server.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
Marines with one word names will stop existing entirely, and rule breaking names can be fixed when there are just mods online.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
None

Re: Reduce rule breaking names
+1, if it's only mods and mentors online and there's a guy with a rule breaking name all we can do is try get an admin on trust that he will follow what we say and actually change it is kind of annoying, plus the fact having a guy run around for the rest of the match with a rule breaking name is kind of immersion breaking. What would you think if Ronald McDonald started running around on the sulaco? (Actually happened at least once)
Even if it wasn't a whole name change, even if it was just so we could change their name to John/Jane doe until the end of the match where they can then change their name.

Porting features from other servers isn't allowed- Although my statement is false, even if you inspire yourself from Yog, that feature makes sence to have in any project whatsoever and is actually a computer tech first year challenge when you learn programming.
Basically run a check to see if there's a valid name and add a last name if it's only a single word.
I'll +1 the whole idea, but please don't run a word-check to see if the name is common or it'll be possible it'll cause trouble in the future.

CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

Re: Reduce rule breaking names
There's a reason I didn't use the word port. As I understand it, the issue with porting is one of code and copyright. Code from other servers is likely to be unavailable to CM staff (and won't patch in properly due to codebase differences) and sprites, maps, etc are the property of their server or creator. This suggestion doesn't fall under either category, so I believe it should be able to be used. I don't know what you mean by checking if the word is common, this only applies to names which break the server rules.Sarah_U. wrote:Porting features from other servers isn't allowed- Although my statement is false, even if you inspire yourself from Yog, that feature makes sence to have in any project whatsoever and is actually a computer tech first year challenge when you learn programming.

Re: Reduce rule breaking names
Basically I baddly worded it since I'm multi-tasking (still at it), but I only meant to say: The idea isn't porting due to the fact it's common practice in many programs, the common word = any words you'd judge innapropriate and that's pretty much it...
Also the reason why I say not to get a filter on names is simply due to the following:
1) Allows to identify troublemakers and idiots.
2) May cause issues either by being arbitrary or by blocking choices.

The filter on names is already there. It's a server rule.
Character Names - Your character must have a unique first and last name. One-word nicknames are allowed inside the name (e.g. Derek 'Double-D' Donahue, Jane 'Crusher' Sanchez) . Ranks, titles, honorifics, offensive, famous and/or pop-culture names are not allowed (e.g. Dr John Smith, Barack Obama, Lt John Doe, Adolf Hitler). Also, avoid lore-based names like Weyland, Yutani, Bishop, Ripley, etc.
This wouldn't change the rule or how it is interpreted, it simply makes enforcing it easier.

Re: Reduce rule breaking names
I believe this has been discussed and it would be too much effort to change it so that mods could change names.
Bumping this for new year cleaning review.

Re: Reduce rule breaking names
Rule breaking names are generally dealt with pretty swiftly, so I'm going to decline this given the lack of support.
