[Position] Game Master

Post by Sarah_U. » 28 Jul 2016, 16:10

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
This is a suggestion for a staff position: Game Master.
The Game Master handles events, flavour the game and tries to balance as not to provoke issues.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
It'll provide with someone to speak to must a player have ideas for a future events.
Much more dynamic to the gameplay and maps.
A person able to assist head-staff when they're organizing events.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
A Game Master is allowed to alter map tiles during gameplay, he can also spawn items and entities, including mobs.
He's an Administrator with enough trust to handle the position, generally in trial to assist the other staff members first before being allowed to make his own.
Any major events are discussed and accepted by the persons allowed to accept it, before it's put in place and the GM could set the Custom Event option so admins can see during investigation when he did events (No need to specify the event in question due to meta).
Game Masters generally make a vote before doing any events that could lead to unbalanced rounds to avoid problems (Lower acceptation / Near-Tie = Less-unbalanced?).

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
Add the position within the list of roles of the server, give them the rights, setup some formalities and that's about it.

Sidenote: I'm mostly suggesting it due to being a thing I really appreciated in certain servers. Game Masters aren't there to check the playerbase, but the flow of the game and further enrich it with diversity and ideas that the playerbase can enjoy. If the round is already seemingly going well on its own that doesn't stop them from doing the events they plan later. Furthermore, it's not like they can't just place a few tombs and whatnot across the map for roleplay and literally do nothing that have a direct impact on the gameplay... I hope you understand the suggestion, enjoy commenting on it and see the potential.

(Also, obviously it's gonna need Apophis and Rahzel approval.)
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

+1, it's a really good suggestion.

+0. Neutral until further develped.
So whitelist a trusted person to maybe flip the board around a little? The question is how would you decide what makes a good game master ( it can be tricky, and its not easy GM'ing a small group, let alone 100ish people who are both opposed parties).

would the GM make a scenario ahead of time, and then send it up the ladder for approval for a game? Would the GM have minion GM's?
How deep would the GM have to plan it out, and how far off the rails could he run a scenario?

I personally like small flavor events when they pop up, things like the missile bases, lost documents, etc. popping up.

Currently, CM works with the admins and mods acting as psedo-GM's and mini-GM's but they can also get overwhelmed with handing out bans or such.

But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!

As stated, GM would be trusted people. Make it being a good admin first a requirement idc.
And yes GMs would setup a scenario ahead of time. After-all you don't want people making events 24/7 without preparation.

Minion-GMs? Nah, lets not bother.
How far they can go? Like I said in the suggestion, if staff's approving it then why the hell not make the xenos spawn on the sully straight out?

The limit to this suggestion is the creativity the GM will have and the brakes head-staffs will put on them.

... I literally had explained all of this- Bad or well in the initial suggestion xP

Gonna have to go against this, for redundancy.

Full Admins are already given the full go ahead to do this. Giving them a flavor title won't really change anytning, except maybe giving them less responsibility in a spot that should carry plenty of it.

Saying "trusted admin" is a pretty far stretch, as once you pass trial, I'm quite sure you've hit that marker.

I'm also saying the redundancy part out of experience. On a different server I used to staff on, we tried having "game master/event coordinator" slots. Hell, I even took up one of the slots. It ended in just being an excuse to ignore ahelps, and was reverted back to regular admin positions within a month of its implementation.

Here's even a quote from the staff code of conduct:

"The Game Admins are the step above moderator. They still handle ahelps, but in addition they can run events and have further powers than a moderator."

TL;DR: Not needed, -1

Ah well seen like this... But generally I had seen it more like a way to focus entirely on the thing... Possibly still give them responsability since it's still an hasle to handle large flows of ahelps and whatnot.

Would see why it's not that important though, feel free to close and delete this as you see fit to prevent problems :x

How dare you have IDEAS in suggestions, you damned fool? What's wrong with you?

Kidding.

But really, wasn't trying to come across as "haha wow what a shit idea ur so dumb just let us lock this now".

Moreso that, I've been in places it's been attempted before, and it just didn't work. We all thought it sounded like a good idea in theory too, but it simply didn't pan out.

Don't be discouraged with your ideas, as it seems like I just squeezed the life out of your confidence in that last reply.

Don't worry. I still would love to slay people in 2d medieval spessmen.

Well, it was a slightly excessive reply I admit, hah.

Admins run events as part of their duties. You generally have to work your way up to that. I think this suggestion is a no go.
