Backpack Helmet Slot
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Similar to the knife slot in the marine boots, add a slot on the backpack that allows a marine to carry a single helmet around.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): As is, you can't really carry helmets around unless you use your hands (which is weird because you CAN put armor in your backpack). I can understand that the reason for this is to prevent metagaming so marines don't pack 3-4 helmets in their backpack at the start of the round... But what about those people who want to let their hair flow out? What about the bandanna users who want to look cool, but also still want to have some protection on hand should shit hit the fan?
With this, now you can have a helmet with you and still be able to wear your rambodanna, military cap, or even let your bald head glimmer in the moonlight and not have to screw over your squad because you are the only medic and get hugged due to not bothering to bring a helmet with you.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): Simple enough really. Have a marine backpack (this won't work with satchels as I imagine it) on your back, grab a helmet, and then click on your backpack with a helmet. Boom, you hang your helmet to a clip on the pack and now can haul it around, just like how you haul a bootknife with you in your boot.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): I suppose trying to rework the code to put knives in boots wouldn't be too difficult, just make one that applies to backpacks and helmets. There might be a bit of sprite work as well to show the helmet attached to the backpack (But only the sprite itself, no need to make it appear on the avatar model, that would be excessive).

Re: Backpack Helmet Slot
It's always pretty annoying having to go back to base for a new helmet so you don't get Face Fucked when you're assaulting the alien hive and they have a carrier that doesn't suck.

Re: Backpack Helmet Slot
While it is nice to have a second helmet on standby, the point of the helmet clip on backpacks isn't to metagame, is it to allow players more freedom in headwear, allowing them to wear what they want and still have a helmet on standby if they need it.Carmac wrote:It's always pretty annoying having to go back to base for a new helmet so you don't get Face Fucked when you're assaulting the alien hive and they have a carrier that doesn't suck.
Will marines use the helmet clip to carry extra helmets once huggers are a confirmed threat? Probably, but on round start, I don't want marines to be lugging two helmets down for no reason.

-1, get gud.
Just kidding, this idea's pretty neat. +1.
Plus, doesn't clipping on your helm to your backpack add to the Space Vietnam aesthetic of Aliens?

Re: Backpack Helmet Slot
If I recall, there are lots of photos of soldiers throughout history clipping their helmets to their backpacks, since in real life, wearing a helmet all the time wouldn't be very comfortable. Trust me, I got to wear one while in a pawnshop, they are quite heavy on the head, so I'd imagine it wouldn't comfortable wearing them for long periods of time.completelynewguy wrote: Plus, doesn't clipping on your helm to your backpack add to the Space Vietnam aesthetic of Aliens?

Re: Backpack Helmet Slot
+1 IF AND ONLY IF it checks your helmet slot for a helmet when you put one on your backpack, and vice-versa with the backpack slot, and only allows a total of one to be present. This would be a neat cosmetic thing, but way too easy to metagame with.

Re: Backpack Helmet Slot
That is what I want to avoid doing with this idea.JPR wrote:+1 IF AND ONLY IF it checks your helmet slot for a helmet when you put one on your backpack, and vice-versa with the backpack slot, and only allows a total of one to be present. I don't want marines to think "Oh neat, now I can carry two helmets at a time now" and abuse this feature. It is mainly as a quality of life thing, so marines can finally WEAR those cosmetic hats you can chose to spawn with in your avatar creation menu, instead of just tossing them aside the moment you spawn in to get a helmet on. I see it happen a lot on round start.
And in the case that a marine DOESN'T toss aside his starting headwear, what just ends up happening is that player weakens his squad by going in unprotected. Xenos go for the easy targets, and running around without a helmet because he wanted to wear a green beret is not very good. Helmets should come on once danger is confirmed, and having your helmet on standby would be a nice little feature.

Top hat 4 life, if donations ever open back up, I'm getting my marine armour + helmet suit-ified, so that the helmet is half top hat and the armour is half tuxedo

Re: Backpack Helmet Slot
This would also mean lugging around an extra helmet, which is something we want to avoid. This is denied for now.
