Napoleon once said "A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon."

So why not give the marines a few? Treat it as an attachable to uniform, and you can have medals/commendations for damn near anything. Kill the queen?Space Medal of honour! Survive horrendous injuries? Space Purple Heart! Save a few marines from the hive? Space Silver Star! Maintain the line during a xeno siege? Space Bronze Star!

I'm not sprite maker though, so I don't know how applicable those would be to make.

I really like this idea, but I envision it being something more profound and consistent after server restarts. Catch is, implementing it would take a lot of work.

An "achievement" system of some kind, with perhaps a new inventory slot that contains a group of all earned medals that people can see when they examine you, such as a lapel.

Aliens could have something similar - "Scars". Kill scars (# Marines killed), Host scars (# Marines hosted), rounds survived, damage dealt/received in tiers, etc.

Would love to have this but coding it would be taxing. Let's certainly keep it on the backburner, though.

If you wanted something less permanent and more "this round only", that would be much simpler and a cool start. The Commander could RP a reward ceremony or something.

Yeah, the captain in the base game has a box of medals in his office. Works exactly as described.

Simply because it works the same way does not mean we use it.

Because unless they are very militarized, they would still need to new sprites. The code is just there already. Its not actually -in- game yet.

Well that'd have to be more OOC than IC exactly, no? You can't really brag about all the 'aliens' you killed if you don't know what the hell a xenomorph would be. Still, I do like the idea of active stat tracking, but that requires a deal of memory from the server and a good bit of code.

I mean, I play off the fact that my character has served before just fine, but not everyone does.

No one will RP for medals because when you're in the middle ceremony, there's a chance that that aliens will fuck it up. No one will pay attention and everyone wants to be all pulling-triggers on aliens.

Not EVERYONE wants to just pull the trigger. Mind you there are people who love RP. Yours truly is one of those people btw. I come to play Marines for RP not for alien shooting.
Though I do enjoy shooting aliens.. when it doesn't break down to being FF'd, or everybody being an asshat without any sense. Which is though rare but does happen every now and again.

Murder, that's a bit hurtful to be honest. Everybody's gung-ho, ditches RP, and goes to shoot aliens immediately in the face? Hmph. There are actually quite a few of us who try to get some sort of RP in, but it's hard when you've got the Rambo marines rushing in and having the aliens retaliate hard, or having Rambo Aliums rushing out and causing trouble immediately for the marines. When one side messes up, both sides have to start fighting.

The code actually already have the medals coded in: bronze, silver, gold and purple heart medals. However, box medals are exclusive of /tg/ code if i'm not mistaken, but they can be easily included.
An interesting idea would be make a in game list of conditions to win a medal: saving an POW marine, escaping as a POW marine, getting severly injured or die and be cloned (purple heart), showing bravery in combat, etc.

And a diamond medal of honor would be cool too.

Instead of a ceremony, the Commander can just throw a medal at the marines head and tell him to get killing or get dying. I mean, that's what i'd do...
