You probably rushed within 3 minutes of the marines touching down, which would be metarushing. I've seen rounds be turned around with 4 xenos left. Early-round, your job is to catch monkies and maybe a marine. With 18 marines, there are always rambos and two xenos working together can capture a single marine.
