• Personality:

Having seen and survived action on countless dozen worlds, Sam keeps a cool head under fire. While he's known to be a bit of a coward at times, opting to save his own life and those of his Marines rather than complete an objective, he's also been known to be exceptionally stubborn and risk-taking at others. If he thinks his mission is important, he'll throw away every life in his squad to complete it, and then die with his hands on a mounted smartgun returning fire to the enemy. He has been especially brave in the past when saving the lives of inexperienced Marines younger than himself, who he doesn't feel are ready to die.

He's been a Marine longer than most Marines have been alive, and is getting close to mandatory retirement age. He's only still in the field because he threatened to go AWOL if they promoted him to a desk job, and his CO didn't want to see a crazy old man go to prison.

Outside of combat, Sam has trouble relating to the other Marines at times - He doesn't get the movies they reference, the songs they like, or the jokes they make. He's seen hundreds of Marines die in his time, and he's learned that getting too attached to any one of them is a recipe for pain. Just because you've been with the same squad for a few years doesn't mean you won't go on a bad deployment and lose them all.

Sam has lost his Texas drawl for the most part from his years away from home, but it still comes back when he's laughing or yelling. It's a rare, old-world speech pattern that a lot of his Marines find amusing - Most of them haven't really seen it outside of period movies set far in the past.

• Biography:

Born in a Dallas hospital, Sam is the son of one of Texas' last independent ranchers. He grew up learning to ride horses and shoot guns. His father was a Marine at one point, and the constant war stories inspired him to one day join the corps himself. He always thought he'd be fighting on Earth, against other terrestrial states, but that wasn't to be - The USCM was the only branch that saw regular combat at the time he enlisted, and he went with them.

As a child, Sam got average grades, but cared more about making friends. Every summer he went with them up north to hunt Elk and whitetail, living in the forest and eating what they could catch, with fruits and vegetables shipped in by drone from the city.

Originally deployed aboard USS Charitable, whose motto is 'Death is our currency', Sam made a name for himself by talking back to his superiors and going to the brig repeatedly. He got to be so popular with the other grunts that his CO pulled him into his office and beat the shit out of him for subverting the chain of command - That was how they did it back then - and he shaped up after that.

After a few deployments Sam was promoted to a Squad Engineer, despite not really understanding much of the job and not receiving any formal training. He spent all his time in this position building entrenchments and learning how to wire turrets, or carrying C4 for breaching instead of a multitool.

Eventually one of the grunts he'd made friends with got high enough up the ladder that they were able to recommend his promotion to Squad Leader, and it was approved by a lazy CO who didn't read his history of insubordination, because the base was understaffed and Sam had seniority and a recommendation from a competent SO. He did surprisingly well in this role, clashing very little with the command staff aboard Charitable because he'd come up with some of them and the rest got the memo that he was one of the 'cool kids', not to be fucked with unless you wanted people to hate you.

This all changed when he was transferred to the Almayer. Since then, Sam has been promoted to SO no less than three times, and busted back down to SL on each occasion for alternatively making fun of or getting into arguments with the other LTs. On one occasion he called the CO a "dumb shit" to his face, and spent over a month in the brig. It's a miracle he hasn't been discharged yet, but Sam has unusually good luck, and for some reason they don't understand his superiors kind of like him. When all is said and done, he can be counted on to shut the fuck up and follow unpopular orders in times of stress, and he's good at making sure his Marines do the same. It's made him perfect for the role of Squad Leader, and he'll probably stay that way until he reaches mandatory retirement age.

Thank you very much! Was worried it might be a bit of a mary-sue, so I tried to give im' a few realistic flaws such as the occasional cowardice and have his success rely on the kindness of others sometimes (in not brigging him/busting him down to PFC) rather than personal badassery.
