Dr. Waffles' Guide to diagnosing your patients and treating them!
So after a particularly infuriating game where a doctor decides to put me in a stasis bag fucking my hand up and not knowing how to treat it afterwards, I decided to make this guide to diagnosing what's wrong with your patients.
Picture this, it's low pop, there's no power in medbay, your scanners aren't working, The horror! What will we do without our precious body scanners!? Not to worry Baldie Doctor! This guide will teach you exactly what to do.
First off, we'll start off with broken bones, Let's say... Baldie McUrist walks into your medbay, asking for help, but there's no power! *gasp*
Method 1: Ask him where it's broken, this is the most commonly used method as the patient can feel the pain, therefore feel the broken bones.
If he tells you, move on to surgery.
If not, to the next method!
Method 2: Check where's the damage, does he have a ton of damage to his X but minimal damage to Y? Better fix give him some bicaridine and cart him off to surgery, be sure to get the damage to X below 40 or it'll just break again upon finishing the surgery, if not to the next method.
Method 3: Take off his splints and scan him with your health analyzer, most wounded will usually have splints on them, upon taking off their splints it'll tell you which limb it's broken, be aware that it does not tell you if the head/chest/groin area is broken, so you're gonna have to use the next method for that one.
If it's a limb, proceed to surgery.
If not, to the next method.
Method 4: Take off their splints and drag them around, this may seem a bit power gamey but desperate times call for desperate measures, taking off their splints and dragging them around will cause organ damage, which you can then figure out what the damage is, His lung burst after dragging him around? Give him some peri and dexalin and off to surgery, Analyzer says he's got brain damage? Peri him and off to surgery! Remember, this method is VERY dangerous and you shouldn't try this if you don't know what you're doing.
Oxygen damage.
Alright, there's no damage to Baldie McUrist's bones but he's taking oxygen damage, what's wrong with him Dr. Waffles!?
Method 1: Analyze them with your health analyzer, does he have low blood?
If so, attach to IV drip with O- blood and apply dexalin if suffocation damage persists.
If not, move to the next method.
Method 2: Check for gasping, if he's gasping that means he's got a busted lung.
If so, apply peridaxon and dexalin if suffocation persists.
If not, move to the next method.
Method 3: Check for lexorin in his blood stream, if he's not gasping and he has high blood levels then it's possible he has lexorin in his blood stream.
If so, slap him onto a sleeper and hit dialysis while applying dexalin.
If not, then I have no idea what else to do.
As always, criticism is welcome and if you have any ideas on what else to add just slap a reply or send me a PM and i'll add it in.
Overdosing.
Okay, so there really isn't any other way to tell if they're overdosing on meds other than using a health analyzer, so i'm gonna teach you how to fix overdosing without dialysis.
Method 1: Give them water and potassium, 5u of water and 5u of potassium makes a little spark that purges all of the chems in that guy's body, it works on dead corpses too so you can revive that guy who got overdosed on quick clot.
Method 2: Give them sugar water and phosporous, this'll make a little smoke bomb that'll disperse the regeants over a small radius, this is less recommended as it might cause whoever is breathing it in to overdose too depending on how much chems was in the patient's system.
Genetic Damage.
Thanks to new information from Jroinc, there's two types of genetic damage, one that damages the maximum HP and can only be fixed by cryo or the as of yet unattainable rezadone chem and the one that affects the DNA itself, such as giving you random mutations/blindness/tourettes which requires Ryetalyn to fix.
For HP damaging genetic damage, the only way to check is via health analyzer, scan them up and dunk them in cryo, as this guide is about when medbay is out of power, you're gonna have to improvise and perform ghetto cryo, grab the cryo beaker, a wrench and drag your patient over to the Extended Operation Bunks just west of the prep rooms, wrench the shower, turn it on and inject your patient then stuff them in it until they heal.
For the DNA damage, you have to give them some ryetalyn so that it resets their DNA, think of it as mutadone from the other servers.

Re: Dr. Waffles' Guide to diagnosing your patients and treating them!
When I'm a field medic and a person has broken bones in areas the hand scanner can't find, I learned to use damage numbers to find where they might be.
For instance, if a person has a broken bone, along with about 20 damage to the chest, but 80 damage to their groin.. chances are the bone is in their groin. This is mainly due to how broken bones work. They don't just happen out of the blue, a part of the body has to take some serious damage in order for a bone to shatter, and as I learned as a doctor, having too much damage on a certain part can result in the bones breaking constantly until the numbers are reduced considerably.
Now, that isn't to say this is perfectly accurate, but a lot of the time it can help field medics in guessing where to splint so a person can get back into the fight or get safely medevaced. Not sure if this would help doctors a lot (since damage would have been reduced enough to make finding the damaged part harder), but it certainly would be a good tip for field medics who don't have time to question where a person's broken bones are (which is often, due to the chaos of battle)

Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

I purposefully left this out but thinking back on it I should probably add it back in since i've seen field medics who simply just run off and die instead of helping the 7 downed guys next to them.Renomaki wrote:When I'm a field medic and a person has broken bones in areas the hand scanner can't find, I learned to use damage numbers to find where they might be.

Can confirm, I've seen and been through that phase of medic. Now I feel like a pacifist when playing medic. Also *cough* broken bones happens when it hits 40 brute *cough*.

This only applies to chest, groin, and head. All limbs have a damage threshold of 20. Past that, they break.Ikmalmn wrote:Also *cough* broken bones happens when it hits 40 brute *cough*.

Huh, well this explains why internal bleeding happens ALOT easier and faster when they do that.
I swear it's a far more devious action than it looks as it increases the chance for the marine to be OD'ed to death via QC.

Rytalin does NOT fix genetic damage. Rezadone would do that, but we can't make it. Only solution is either a cryotube, or ENGINEERING portable cryo.TheMusician321 wrote:Update: Added in a miscellaneous section and genetic damage.
I can explain why it doesn't fix genetic damage if you want, but it's a very common misconception.

Please explain, both the CM wiki and the BayChem guide say that it heals genetic damage, i've also used ryetalyn back when we still had cloning and it fixed people up the same way.Jroinc1 wrote:Rytalin does NOT fix genetic damage. There are 2 types of genetic damage.TheMusician321 wrote:Please explain, both the CM wiki and the BayChem guide say that it heals genetic damage, i've also used ryetalyn back when we still had cloning and it fixed people up the same way.
ONE affects your health as a maximum HP reduction. This can be fixed by using cryo with clonex or cryox, or by using rezadone at any temperature.
The OTHER affects your genetics. Remember when we had genetics and cloning, and occasionally mad RSRs would isolate a power manually, or people would be cloned and come out with tourettes/blindness/BAD things? Ryetalyn resets your DNA to round-start. It does NOT fix a single HP of damage.
Hope that clears it up.
